    Despite not even being alive for oldhammer editions. It's a weird faux nostalgia and fascination with the old aesthetic and janky mechanics. Love the content.

      I thought I was the only one. I prefer the old 90's aesthetic of warhammer it looks way more stylized from the artworks to the models.

      @dickkickem4238 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I'm in a similar weird boat. Like I know metal models are on the whole worse than plastic but I for some illogical reason prefer them. This gets even stranger considering my preferred 40k army is admech. Which didn't exist as an army till like 7th edition.

      Right? I plan on painting my next army (goffs) retro and hell I even want to play blood angels just so I can have that snappy red. Must’ve been a great time to play

    • @silkyjohns0n
      @silkyjohns0n ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@dickkickem4238you could definitely paint admech in a second ed style scheme. Lots of bright red. Lots of black and white checker board trim on clothing, black and bright yellow stripes on weapons etc. And those delicious goblin green and flock bases.
      As someone who was alive then, the new gritty aesthetic was something I messed with at the time through darker paint schemes, washes etc, sponge weathering etc. But I still loved the gloriously bright schemes!

    In those days, it wasn't polite to play to win. One ~hoped~ to win but played in such a fashion that generally indicated defeat in increasingly cinematic and hilarious ways. Fully adore these animated battle reports!

Love the flat colours and basic shapes everywhere. I started in 3rd but there was a lot of this stuff still around to feel nostalgic about it nonetheless. 🎉

    This was the first white dwarf I ever bought (I was 13), and it propelled me into the hobby almost entirely because of this battle report. Something about the each figure being shown by a round symbol and the vivid colours. 40k just isn’t as fun these days. I still have my ultramarine and Ork armies based almost exactly on the rosters from this bat rep. And i still have this well read copy of WD. Amazing nostalgia. Thank you for making this.

  • @luisbermudez4756
    @luisbermudez4756 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The wacky appearance of the Razorback had to do with its original roots - it started off as a Modeling Workshop customized Rhino, and the awkward looking turret was composed primarily from the front hatch cover of the Rhino kit with some plastic weapons attached to the front and some hatches put on the sides.

  • @CantusTropus

    I love these old style batreps. It's not quite as old, but the Imperial Guard vs Tyranids game in WD 306 was my first ever introduction to the hobby, and I think it would make for a fantastic video. I really enjoyed this, and I imagine any GW staff from this period would love watching it. I started collecting White Dwarf with issue 193, so this is before my time, but the photographs still have that wonderful glow that permeates all Warhammer content from the early 1990's. As a youngster, I remember feeling really disappointed when an army that I collected lost a battle report, especially if that army had to wait years to get another outing. To be honest, I find this report more engaging than any contenporary battle, even though I'm barely old enough to remember 8e Warhammer Fantasy.
    I put it down to the fact that I have no idea how this edition works. It's like watching an ordinary chess game that opens with white launching a pawn into the enemy backline where it explodes, knocking the enemy queen down to one wound.

    • @MasterShake9000
      @MasterShake9000 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Compared to more modern GW battle reports, I think the big difference is that nowadays GW emphasizes showing off the miniatures, whereas back then the focus was on narrating what’s happening.
      TH-cam battle reports tend to vocally narrate what’s happening, but the visuals tend to be a bit chaotic and similarly focused on showcasing the terrain and armies rather than explaining the sequence of events throughout the turn or game.

    • @LoneWolf-rc4go
      @LoneWolf-rc4go ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MasterShake9000 I always go the sense that the old battle reports were a bit slap-dash with the crew putting down what was in the studio army, rolling some dice, forgetting rules, doing something that might seem cool rather than what was tactically optimal.
      Over time this changed and it ended up feeling more like an advert for the latest army. They would almost always win their inaugural battle and I really started to dislike the fact that we'd have half a White Dwarf devoted to telling us how great the new army was followed by a battle report that always had them coming out on top.

I mean he spends all his points on Devastators and then leaves them completely by themselves out of cover... I mean come on... The assault marines literally did nothing the entire game. This is great, but my biggest issue with this channel is the overuse of AI images. It's ethically sketchy and sours an otherwise enjoyable video.

    This was my favourite part of White Dwarf. Many a late night reading these reports over and over! Would love to see the Warhammer (not 40k) report featuring Dragons and a Giant. Loved that one especially. Wish I had those magazine copies still.

    The out rules for the battle wagon was great, it was an open topped vehical, the only open top transport in the game at that point. The best thing about it was that as an open toped transport it could move up to 6 (7 with a red paint job) and then the boys inside could jump out and charge on there own.

    • @kharnifex
      @kharnifex ปีที่แล้ว

      this is second edition, you cant charge from a moving vehicle and no red paint job, charges are declared before movement

      The Skaven versus Wood Elves from the late 80s, which might have been the very first battle report(?). I read and re-read that thing a dozen times. It had zoats and wardancers and jezzails and all sorts of cool, creative stuff.

    Man, I miss 2nd edition. My friends and I played the hell out of that edition of 40k, more than Rogue Trader 40k.
    3rd ed. was my last edition of 40k. I sold my 12,000 point Space Marine army when 4th edition came out. Never looked back... until I just watched this video. Now, I want to find another 2nd ed. box set for sale. 😆 🤣 😂

    Shocked to learn that Predator prices have literally never fluctuated, £20 in 1999 is equivalent to about £42.75 in 2023, pretty much exactly what GW charges for one now.

    Good old memories, as much as I loved 2nd Edition... There was a lot of dumb stuff too like the Virus stuff!!! Been an avid Ork player since 2nd Edition (And seeing the 'Ere We Go Rogue Trader book that same time). Ahhh... Must resist old man nostalgia rant and "Kids these days" ramblings!

    I'd love to see a Warcraft Classic revival of this loaf-of-bread boltgun period. Having a Commander running around full of combat drugs, the various blast markers floating around and of course the Shokk gun feels so much more fun than all the self-serious grimdarkness

    8.35 "Jervis must've felt pretty confident at this point, and with only 3 heavy weapons left in the Ultramarine army, and 5 undamaged Ork vehicles ready to move into their deployment zone, what could possibly go wrong?"
    It could be a battle report featuring Jervis Johnson, that's where it always goes wrong for Jervis.

    Yup, the Virus Grenade one of the most hated cards back then. I lost nearly half of my Eldar Army against a Blood Angels player to this card. Which was a good thing for him since if I had those guys the game would have ended much differently. With me crushing him by turn three as it was I still nearly won and would have if the game had gone on for one more turn. Eldar were very strong back then and that is why GW nerf'd them hard back in 1998.

    Rainbow Ork armies are the best Ork armies. Always loved the original fluff about Ork tribes being a mix of different clans depending on who the boss could bully into joining up.

    Truly amazing, you're doing yeoman's work here!
    This BTW is basically why I hate the new editions. These missions had ACTUAL objectives that not only enhanced but directly related to the games instead of this "have you unit stand on this anonymous pie-plate" nonsense we have now.

    I see fluff bunnies in the comments and have a message for you all:
    Play the game you want to play, confrim with your opponent what type of game you are looking for (especially if its pick up and play). It's on both players to make sure they and their opponent are having fun, you cannot expect people to play a "thematic fluff" game just because you don't play competitive.
    If you go to tournaments as a fluff bunny - Be prepped to be tables 6/6 times, you are at a competitive event.
    Sincerely,
    A dirty try hardy filthy casual
