- Welcome to the Blue Cactus Dairy Goat Ranch! We breed show quality Nigerian Dwarf Goats! We currently have a herd of 25 does and 6 bucks. Our herd is rotationally grazed on our 11 acre homestead in Arizona. We make cheese and soap from the milk we get and we also raise Kune Kune pigs for meat and chickens for eggs and keep a large garden year round!

There is just not enough information out there about the dairy performance programs so I truly appreciate you making a video explaining all the ins and outs of the one day test! We are going to be doing the 305 day for the first time this year and I feel so overwhelmed, but after your video I know the same components go into the 305 day so if you can tackle the one day, surely I can figure out the 305 lol as always, LOVE your videos and can't wait for the next one!
How do you line up a tester?
I really enjoy the technical information you give us on the does, and how the shows they go to work. I would like to see one of the shows when things get better. This was pretty cool, I want to open a goat dairy eventually too but I’ve never heard of milk stars before. I kind of assumed milk testing was just for quality or make sure they didn’t have mastitis or stuff, but it seems like a still have a lot to learn before I’m ready to open a farm. I’m in college for livestock now, but our goats are for meat so you don’t learn a whole lot about dairy.... I don’t really have the heart send off my goats so often with meat :(
Awesome!! We are doing the 305 day DHIR milk test this year on our LaManchas, Mini LaManchas and Nigerians...! We just did our second test for the year. I’m already seeing decisions on keepers/sell and who I’ll breed to whom in the fall. Data is great!

What if both daughters of lucky get their milk Stars what would lucky be
He would remain a +B buck. They can go as high as a ++B buck but he would need 6 daughters from 6 different does to earn their stars.

Question: lace is a 4*, Lillie yet to earn. If Lillies does earn their * will they still be *6, or must Lillie earn hers first.

So once a goat received their milk star do they keep it or do they have to be tested each year to keep the milk star?
If they get tested over and over each year and get a milk star does that make them a double milker star or only one star for each goat?
with my question above if only each goat gets one star a five star milker means she and her mom and so on and so forth had their milk stars and so it shows the good lines?
Does the milk star have to happen in the first three years?
Are there certain level of stars? Like you said different places or different ways can get star easier but is there more prominence over one or another?
with the question above if a goat get there star at a younger age is that seen as a better star than one who gets it later in life?

They can earn their star at any point in their life. There are not different levels of stars but depending on the type of test they can be qualified for different earnings. For instance the 305 test they could be eligible for superior genetics where they can't on a one day.
I hate waiting!!! How many hears has it taken for you to have the pedigree’s you have now and your whole Tribe. I love researching bloodlines in racehorses. This is just as satisfying.
It has taken SO many years lol. It's a lot of work but I love it!
Does that mean anyone who has bought your babies will have updated pedigrees if they do get stars?

If they are on the 305 most people do it yearly for the data even if they already earned their stars. A one day milk test isnt necessary to do again. Once they earn their star it's theirs :)

I'm already in love with her and entered her into the Virtual Show through MDGA. Which brings me to my next question, is ADGA hosting any virtual shows you could enter your girls in?
How did you find someone to come out and test your herd? Did you do it rhough DHIA? I have seen people do mail in testing but am unfamiliar with having an actual tester come out. Thank you!
Does anyone know if we can use a milker for the milk tests? I had to order a Henry Milker. This would've been our first year since we're just getting started. However, my arthritic hands just won't allow me to milk by hand 😥, so I need a milker. Anyway just wondering if they allow milking machines for milk tests? Thank you for your comments! 💕

My great grandfather had a dairy goat farm. I don’t even know what breed he had. I find it interesting to watch and learn from you and your family. I wonder how it was way back when for my great grandpa. The changes that have taken place over all these years.
Crystal, how does the dairy goat differ from farm to commercial dairy? Do the commercial dairy operations use machines to milk or do they have to milk by hand?
Commercial operations have a lot of regulations to follow. I follow my own lol

Wondering if having doelings or bucklings would change the butterfat/milk ratio. I watched a documentary that cows with bullocks will make a milk with higher butterfat content than those that produce heifers, which is apparently also true of humans whether the mother has a boy or a girl. Very interesting studies.

Is the goat in milk? If you you may need to milk her a few times while she dries up. If she has kids and the kids are nursing off her, you wont have to milk at all.

Lacy earned her star with almost 5 lbs for 2 milkings. That's a good goat! Many things factor how much milk a goat produces but 1.5-2 lbs a milking is good for a Nigi.
