    Is making a wallet easy i have thought about it but i wasn't sure i could pull it off

    • @baronleathercraft

      Thank you for the question. The wallet in the video is a bit complicated but if you are going to make a standard wallet it will be much simpler. Like anything practice makes perfect so your first wallet might not come out the best but it will be a good start to understand how they are made. I think you would have a lot of fun making it. The simple answer is that they are not hard to make, The hard part is in the details like keeping your stitching straight, making sure all your edges and corners are burnished and done correctly. These are all things you refine and you enjoy leather crafting. A wallet is a great place to start and there are plenty of free patterns for wallets o line and even on youtube. Enjoy!

    I'm just now learning about leather work. I saw you trace the skull. How is the image transferring from the paper to the leather? It looks like a pencil outline?... special paper or just a pressed imprint? Thanks

    • @baronleathercraft
      @baronleathercraft  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for the question, I make sure that the pattern has tape on both sides so it does not get wet because you will be wetting the leather. What I use to trace the image is a some what pointy stylus. It indents the leather as you trace the pattern. Then you carve out the pattern with your swivel knife.

    • @baronleathercraft
      @baronleathercraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      One tricky part is to know if you are going to stick to it. When I started I bought a bunch of starter tools only to have to replace them when my knowledge and understanding of leathercrafting grew. So when it comes to knives and chisels don't buy the cheapest. Practice stamping straight patterns. Keep your swivel knife sharp and practice with it. There is so much to learn on TH-cam. Like any craft, musician, etc...there is no end to learning. Enjoy!

    • @baronleathercraft
      @baronleathercraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much! It is a technique I love to use. The dye applicator is just a piece of a T-shirt. I will apply the dye to the shirt just by holding the bottle up to the shirt and then turning it upside down and back quickly. Then I will wipe off any excess dye left on the shirt on to a news paper. When I feel the t-shirt is dry enough I will start applying the dye and applying pressure wherever I want the dye to be darker. Actually I have a video explaining this very technique. th-cam.com/video/rfLVUZK8GmY/w-d-xo.html . Thank you for the question. I hope this helps!

    • @baronleathercraft
      @baronleathercraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Chad, Thank you for the kind and inspiring comment!. I find I get so absorbed in what I am doing I do not pay to much attention to the time but I will take a shot at how long. The most time consuming aspect of making this wallet is the hand sewing. cutting out the leather and tracing the pattern and tooling it does not take to long. Dying like this take maybe 30-40 minutes. When I wet the leather and apply the embossing dust I have to wait for the leather to dry. I guess a day and a half. Maybe less maybe longer. I wish I had a better answer. I'll pay more attention next time I make one. Whenever I try to time my projects I end up forgetting that I am trying to keep track. :) Thank you!

  • @jenkins1979
    @jenkins1979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Love your work and cool design.What weight leather did you use for tooling?

    • @baronleathercraft
      @baronleathercraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used 4-5 oz on the cover and 3 oz for the pockets. Sometimes when you emboss you are stretching the leather and the dimensions of the leather shrink as far as height and width. Make sure after you complete the cover to be sure your pockets are at the same width as the cover. If the pockets are to big (long) at that point understand that at some point you will have to make them match the cover. You do not want to sew everything together and realize that you have to adjust the edges so much that the sew lines on the pockets meet the actual end of the edge of the wallet. You don't want to sand the edges to the point where you are actually leaving no space between the sew line and the edge of the wallet. Maybe more info then you asked for but it can save you from doing this error which I learned from experience. :)

      I used 4-5oz for the cover, closer to 4oz. I don't really like to tool on leather less then 4oz but I will tool on 3oz if necessary. You don't want to go to thick with the cover because of the embossing. I used 2-3oz leather for the pockets. Hope this helped. :)

      I noticed on the springfield webpage they say "The dust created by working with leather machinery (such as a splitter)"
      Maybe there is a Italian company that uses this machine and they might be just throwing out the very dust you need. Can't hurt to look. I also understand that in Europe they do sell a ready made "embossing filler for leathercraft" but it might be expensive. Hope this helps. :)

      Thank you for the advice. I have been trying different things. Of course not everyone is going to like the same thing, In some of my videos I have jazz running through the video. Not everybody can handle the jazz. :) I figured the Metal would be good for the skull wallet. As for the sound of the tools, I have a window mounted AC which the microphone picks up all to well. Maybe just lower the volume for this video. :) I plan on trying lots of different ideas. Thanks for the suggestion.
