The only FPS/RTS hybrid I've played that has made the formula work is Divinity: Dragon Commander. The thing every other hybrid game gets wrong is not being able to control building and army movement while you're in first person. Dragon Commander also has the advantage of you specifically being a dragon so you're flying. This gives you a good vantage point to direct your armies. At minimum you need to have an attack move for your whole army, and the ability to queue units of choice while in first person. If you don't have that, the first person mode is going to constantly fight you, no matter how seemless you try to make it.
It's a pretty old game but it's still really fun, Battlezone 98. It's 90% off on Steam at the moment so it costs about the same as a large bottle of coke. It's about the US and Soviet Russia finding alien tech that allows them to go to space during the Cold War and fight it out throughout the Sol system. You can run around as a soldier using a sniper rifle to kill the pilot of enemy tanks and commandeer them, construct bases and defence turrets. My only complaint about it is the slightly janky controls.
Dust Front just has this glorious gritty vibe to it and Era One seems to be very interesting and a lot of other good stuff. I am also super hyperd for Sanctuary shattered Sun.

Godsworn , AoE/AoM and Rennessaince Kingdom Wars seems to be the best RTS out there right now. The C&C/SC2 clones really just make me want to go back and play actual C&C or SC2. Speaking of which, the Corona mod for Red Alert 3 is in beta, hopefully full release of the mod will arrive soon.

hi, one of the ablight devs here. thanks for the nice words, and i can assure you that ablight is NOT gonna be a blizz style rts. our economy will work completely different. we will have free expansion all over the map instead of fixed bases, will will have an abundance of resources all over the map instead of the same resource alignment in a few spots where you are forced to expand, we are gonna have many economical upgrades, will will have dedicated drop off sites instead of only drop off at the HQ, so you can sneak workers to mine without having to build a main base, we are gonna have 3 resources instead of 2 and so on and so on. gameplay itself, combat, basebuilding will also have our own touch to it. if i had to compare us to famous rts titles, i think a mix of age of empires and command & conquer would describe ablight the best, but at the end of the day, we want to create our own identity. cheers man!
Hi, one of Ablight dev too: Thank you for the nice words : if when you mention Starcraft you think about : amazing lore, strong asymetrical gameplay, amazing balance, support for decades, fun, quality on every part, pathfinding, multiplayer, ladder, observator mode, replays, great campaign.... if you think all of that when you say starcraft, at this moment, yes, Ablight has to be "starcraft with my paint", this is an honor to be compared to the best. But Ablight will have with own identity, flavor and style. It will introduce is own gameplay mechanics, but better than words, may you test the game and discover it by yourself. You may be greatly surprised. Our team is made of RTS developpers, players, pro players for some, and for myself more than 20 years dedicated to the genre: Age of Empires/Mythology / Starcraft1-2 / Warcraft 3 / Command and Conquer series / Dawn of war series / Rise of Legends/ Iron Harvest etc etc But moreover Ablight will be Ablight.
C&C Renegade.. my god... I replayed it 5,6 times at least. So much fun. Battlezone was probably even a better game, but less humor and funky characters. Thank you for the comment!
I've been following Silica very close ever since it went into EA. - It is no longer devloped by a singe dev, there are 8 more devs helping dram (the original dev). - Right now the focus point of development is on AI. Expected release (of the AI patch) is around Christmas. - The basis of the game is very good, but a lot of adjustments have to be made to make it more fun and smooth. These are all planned as far as I know. - Right now there are 2 factions in the game, the second human faction is being developed. The buidlings are ready, but the units not yet. - I recommend to buy it now, because price will go up a bit after release.
@ You are welcome. The game has extreme potential to me, for two big reasons: 1. To play an rts game with units controlled by real humans, makes me care way more for them, and will result in things seen on the Battlefield that now cpu controlled unit would think of. 2. It allows me to play with friends who aren't into rts games, but who do like fps games. It will give a very fun way of cooperation. Development isn't going that fast, but if it will diliver as promised. It will be a massively fun game. The wait will be worth it then.
Sea Power just released into early access as well. It's very early access, mind you, not even in alpha yet, but what's there is pretty fun. Can recommend.
Hi and thx for sharing. I have had it in mind for the past two videos, but it just plays so differently, that I can't find a way to match it to these other games.
I appreciate you didnt cut blizzard or gearbox any slack. They have no excuse. Hard to say which of these looks the best. Im really excited for 5 or 6 of them. Great update video as usual, my man.
I really would love a real time tactical large scale wargame in a scifi setting focusing on planetary invasions and space combat, kinda like empire at war but bigger, you know, with the scale of units going up to city block sized mechs or land battleships, a focus on utlizing dropships to move forces around, fleet engagements with a focus on gaining favorable orbital positioning for deployment and bombardment, dropping nukes, a grand strtegy element like total war where you build up your teritory to build forces and reinforce units then throw a curve ball like see if you can get a zerg like faction to work in this system or something
What makes homeworld 3 even more disappointing is the fact that we know for a fact that their entire story was rewritten by a consultancy agency because the game wasn’t “inclusive” enough. I am a literal card carrying communist raised on the moral values of things like Star Trek and even I think all this forced inclusivity nonsense is insane, let artists make art and you will see people from all walks of life flock to it but people aren’t dumb and they can tell when some committee is trying to pander their way into their wallets.
That topic is so horrible, I even actively avoid talking about it. If a developer is insane enough to let that happen to their game, they are beyond saving. Thank you kindly for sharing your view on this topic.
@@perafilozofthe thing is it’s never the devs that make that choice it’s their bosses and more often than not their bosses bosses that make that choice because they want to find a new market to squeeze the money from. Unchecked greed has damned near destroyed the games industry but thankfully the rise of so many different tools to teach people to make games themselves has allowed new indie artists to make their own games and tell their own stories that the corporate overlords at the AAA companies would never allow and at least with indie games we know they succeed or fail on their own merits not because someone hired a fancy marketing agency or consultancy group to trick people into buying their games. I know it’s wishful thinking but I want games to stop being seen as just products and toys and for them to truly be seen as art.
Yes, but remember each dev team used to be small and free. They allowed themselves to become part of the corporate machine and from there it was only down with content and up with profits. This is why Dev teams today are literary buying themselves out of the clutches of greedy corporations.
@@perafilozof i mean when game studios get that big how often do devs have a way to push back, look at helldivers 2 they basically got screwed over because sony got greedy the comminity was to big for sony to handle the backlash.

Hello, I keep an eye on its development non stop, but it has been low on updates for the past year or so due to developer's personal reasons and too few people work on it. @@perafilozof I'm looking forward to Dust Front and the AoE II DLC from this video but I'm also looking forward to the full release of Tempest Rising 😎👍
I know, I know. But it is much better for an indie dev, especially solo one, to focus on what can be sold well, before adding such complicated options as multiplayer.
as I now have starship troopers base game, does this mean there's a chance the DLC's are free, like what happened with warhammer DOW II series (got retribution free)
Love the updates! I got WC2 remaster and for the $15 I can say it wasn't worth it. I got it for nostalgia since that was my first RTS. Any one of these would be a far better purchase. HW3 was so bad that I didn't even buy it following demo they had. I do not know how they managed to fuck it up so hard, formula was there. Only thing HW needed is extra depth in mechanics.
The real problem with SIns2 was mostly due to the missile meta dominating the gameplay. Like seriously, missiles were so damn good that missile massacres were a everyday thing. Also more Blizzard Ls...it's becoming vexing. So damn vexing. Edit: Still salty over Homeworld 3. I blame Randy Pitchford for all of this.
I know that is the meta, but if you avoid it, you can still have some good fun with friends who don't abuse the meta. Thank you for the comment, agreed about HW3 and Blizzard
As usual, thank you for the video and the update on so many games ! -I discovered Era One earlier today, glad you're already talking about it :) Seems pretty neat. -Unnatural worlds seems like a lot of fun, I'll keep an eye out for it :) -Many single player only games makes me worried as I got frustrated to no end with 5 nations. -I'm still mad about Homeworld 3, one of the few games I paid in full, hoping for an excellent sequel with plenty of DLC and a good story and... Steam had to side with the players to make them move ! I don't think they'll fix it correctly, there seems to be absolutely no passion at all for the game, only forced because steam told them to. DEI and lazy devs killed the franchise. I don't think I ever want to trust Gearbox ever again. -This said, I fell for WC 1 and 2, bought the battlechest with the 3 and once I again, I regret to be an Aries as impulsivity is apparently one of my flaw. Finger crossed to have them fixed and improved because right now, Microsoft bought for billions a company with lazy devs using AI to make games. I know Microsoft wants a quick return on investment but Microsoft and Blizzard are looking pretty bad right now. (oh ya, Obsidian which is working on Avowed is also heavily criticized) -Silica and Outpost are both scratching the itch of Battlezone Combat Commander (1 and 2), which is one of my all time favorite, and I didn't dare jumping into those 2 games yet since I felt pretty ripped off with the 4 games above (the 3 WC and HW3) -Powerplay, DORF, fractured alliance, Battle for Vera, counter clash... All those look so fun and amazing ! Good news for RTS fans there :D -Circle empires 2, well, the first one left a sour taste in my mouth as it was completely messy with weird maps, weird tech tree in a fast paced RTS designed to be insane. Not sure the sequel is going to be much better but who knows, I'll still take a look just in case. -I was expecting a delay for Age of Mythology, no surprise there, I'm pretty hooked on that one so let's hope they do a pretty good job unlike other studio under Microsoft. -Ablight lil video you showed looks a lot more impressive than the first one we got a while back, it was on my wishlist already but gosh does that hype me !

Strategy games have survived over the years by appealing to a fantasy. Some games deliver on aspects of the fantasy, and many more promise so much more than they deliver. But will any developer eventually crack the code and create the ultimate strategy game that blends all the fantasies?
Unnatural World aka "Planetary Annihilation" parady. And yet in my view already better then PA. FOR YOU CAN SEE THE UNIT'S. And for what even reason. I don't feel lost when I look at it. In PA I do.
I've only met one game in my life that combined RTS and something from the first person, and it wasn't a shooter - Rise and fall: Civilizations at war. And this game was amazing. The moment when you are in the first person commanding a thousandth army to attack is unforgettable. Alas, there were no more such experiments. I really hope that something will come out of silica About the initiative in Europe. A very excellent and seemingly tedious movement. And emotionally, I'm all for it. But, the economist in me says that this is a bad decision. Outright socialism, which artificially increases the cost of developing and maintaining games. It's damn sad, but alas, it's reality. And such a decision will only lead to a decrease in the development of video games in Europe. Well, Homeworld... This is my favorite game of all time, and I don't feel anything but fierce hatred for the developers of the 3rd part. Where the hell are the modules? Where is the opportunity to approach a large ship from an inconvenient angle and aimlessly destroy the main caliber, leaving the fleet without the main gun? Where is the opportunity for a fleeing ship to knock out a hyperspace module to prevent it from escaping? Let them be kicked the hell out of the gaming industry and never let in there again for what they did. I hate them.
Hello and thank you kindly for sharing your thoughts on these topics! I must admit I don't remember playing Rise and fall: Civilizations at War. It could have been a very long time ago when I wasn't proficient at this type of a game and didn't even realise all its functions, or it simply wasn't something people I knew played, since I didn't have internet back then. I get your point about socialism vs cost. But something has to be done before publishers find a way to go and create even worse situations just because they can. Homeworld 3 is dead, long live Homeworld is all I can say at this point....
@@perafilozof After a little digging in my memory, I remembered a few more near-strategy games that have first-person gameplay: Maelstrom - very different factions, the characters can choose a first-person view. Since the game has a fantastic setting, this is exactly a shooter. Although there is a melee for the alien. Empire above all is a very crooked toy in which you can switch the first-person view and shoot enemies. Colobot is an extremely old game. In fact, one of the very first automation games in which you program robots to perform a variety of tasks. The whole gameplay is from the first person, although there is no battle for the character as such. Very similar in this regard is "Parkan: an iron strategy". There is a basic third-person gameplay, but you can easily switch to a first-person view, and run on behalf of the operator both on the built base and inside production buildings. But just like in the last game, there is no first-person combat.
Hi and thank you kindly for sharing your memories with us all here. I will make sure to write these down. I am only familiar with Colobot as I played a ton of that one, made me learn programing :)

Hope many of these have *full controller support* More and more PC gamers just play with a controller and ** Handheld ** gaming PCS obviously use controllers. - Steam Deck, MSI Claw, Asus Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, Aya Neo, GPD etc...
Hi and thx for sharing your concern over controller support, I know many want to play such games on big TVs or consoles, but rarely are those options made in those games.
@@perafilozof yes, and some people want to know why. It's good there are some traditional PC RTS games implementing full controller support like AOE 4/Mythology, Halo Wars 1/2 etc.. not interested in the KBM "elitism" attitude of some users, I want to hear it directly from the devs/studios. PC RTS is really the only genre left that hasn't fully embraced controller support, especially when there is precedent for it with Command & Conquer 3, KW and LOTR BFME2, Universal at War and Supreme Commander 2 on consoles with good controller implementation.
@@perafilozof no, but lets start saying DOW3 isn't completely rubbish, the game had a lot of potential at the time but just didn't deliver in the classical RTS formula, no doubt it was a big mistake by devs tho and a missed opportunity. Anyway i'm referring to a new project, 40K is an enormous IP and the fact that there's no studio actually developing a new title(as far as i know) really makes me mad, considering how many new RTS are currently in developing, many of them also by single devs!
I know how you feel, WH40k is an amazing IP to make games on. And they give it out to so many developers. I sure hope more great RTS games are made with it.
I was gonna get the terminator game but when I found out there's no base building and reasouse harvesting it put me off I'm a big rts fan and c&c is my favourite of them all I want to build cool bases anywhere and as much as I want in the game aswell as harvesting different tyoes of reasouses with different types of harvesters and I don't want it to be limited reasouses either also I want to be able to build massive army's if I wanted to and have a massive maps same with starship trooper. When I first played c&c I always thought they can only get bigger amd better but instead they just remove what is fun and what works for fast-paced multiplayer games

The SupCom clones look promising though.
And its a good thing they are not trying to be clones but improve and change the gameplay!
Strategos looks mighty promising, thanks for the heads-up
That playable factions list alone is quite impressive

We need alien vs predator extinction 2 it needs to happen. If those of you who haven't played it I recommend it its amazing be able to play the alien and use your queen to lay eggs bring body and breed your army of different alien types depending on what host or u can play the marines pr even the predators
Sounds disturbing and interesting at the same time :) But who can expect less from those two franchises meeting up
@perafilozof I know, it is a shame but I still play avp extinction I just wish they would make a second one

Dust Front seems to have a bright potential :3
I think so too! It just has be released first :) Thx for the comment!
Ablight looks competent, but HOLY SH** why every new medium-scale RTS has to be "starcraft with my paint on" xD
Hi and thx for the comment. I hope once I play it for you and showcase it you will think otherwise!
hi, one of the ablight devs here. thanks for the nice words, and i can assure you that ablight is NOT gonna be a blizz style rts. our economy will work completely different. we will have free expansion all over the map instead of fixed bases, will will have an abundance of resources all over the map instead of the same resource alignment in a few spots where you are forced to expand, we are gonna have many economical upgrades, will will have dedicated drop off sites instead of only drop off at the HQ, so you can sneak workers to mine without having to build a main base, we are gonna have 3 resources instead of 2 and so on and so on. gameplay itself, combat, basebuilding will also have our own touch to it. if i had to compare us to famous rts titles, i think a mix of age of empires and command & conquer would describe ablight the best, but at the end of the day, we want to create our own identity.

Really hoped for another post-release renaissance to be the case for HW3, guess not this time =(
No money, no dev time on it. Was to be expected with 100 people playing the game.
i played one of the first FPS/RTS hybrids called Battlezone 1 and 2 and later CnC renegade
C&C Renegade.. my god... I replayed it 5,6 times at least. So much fun. Battlezone was probably even a better game, but less humor and funky characters. Thank you for the comment!

Silica is my all time favorite this is in my hall of fame. SILICA is the best
Hehe, thx for sharing! I am glad to hear that!
ERA ONE for me,
keep up the great content !!!
Thank you for sharing your favorite! I am glad to hear that. And I will!
Hello and thank you very much for sharing that extra info. I will incorporate that into future videos. Thank you for the recommendation!
@ You are welcome.
The game has extreme potential to me, for two big reasons:
Ahh indeed, that is a very good point. FPS players can come in and have in an RTS game!
The current release date is somewhere around mid 2025, while the Centauri Faction is planned to release in the new year. Otherwise all correct
@@GOLANX releae of the AI-update is around Christmas I meant.

I really would love a real time tactical large scale wargame in a scifi setting focusing on planetary invasions and space combat, kinda like empire at war but bigger, you know, with the scale of units going up to city block sized mechs or land battleships, a focus on utlizing dropships to move forces around, fleet engagements with a focus on gaining favorable orbital positioning for deployment and bombardment, dropping nukes, a grand strtegy element like total war where you build up your teritory to build forces and reinforce units
then throw a curve ball like see if you can get a zerg like faction to work in this system or something
Sounds like a game someone should make :) I will keep my eye out for such a game. Thank you for the comment!

Dust front look amazing it's such a shame if it didn't offer any multiplayer features at least P2P , LAN of Archon mode would be great.

Love the updates! I got WC2 remaster and for the $15 I can say it wasn't worth it. I got it for nostalgia since that was my first RTS. Any one of these would be a far better purchase. I am very hesitant on Silica since I have yet to find a good hybrid that does it well. The last one I got was Executive Assault 2 and its okay at best.
Hi and thank you for sharing your experience with those games. That is exactly what I was afraid of, them profiting from low effort and our nostalgia.
What I dislike about SINS 2 is how the AI straight up cheats. Their ship production rate and resource gathering rates are unreal.
I know... there isn't much they can do about it to give the AI any particular skill to be on par with players.

Hi, I wouldn't recommend it, with DLCs, past $10-15. Even with the recent changed the developers did with the patches and updates.

No problem!
The real problem with SIns2 was mostly due to the missile meta dominating the gameplay. Like seriously, missiles were so damn good that missile massacres were a everyday thing.
Also more Blizzard Ls...it's becoming vexing. So damn vexing.

As usual, thank you for the video and the update on so many games !
-I discovered Era One earlier today, glad you're already talking about it :) Seems pretty neat.
-Unnatural worlds seems like a lot of fun, I'll keep an eye out for it :)
-Many single player only games makes me worried as I got frustrated to no end with 5 nations.
(oh ya, Obsidian which is working on Avowed is also heavily criticized)
-Silica and Outpost are both scratching the itch of Battlezone Combat Commander (1 and 2), which is one of my all time favorite, and I didn't dare jumping into those 2 games yet since I felt pretty ripped off with the 4 games above (the 3 WC and HW3)
-Powerplay, DORF, fractured alliance, Battle for Vera, counter clash... All those look so fun and amazing ! Good news for RTS fans there :D
-Circle empires 2, well, the first one left a sour taste in my mouth as it was completely messy with weird maps, weird tech tree in a fast paced RTS designed to be insane.

Hardly. There isn't enough investors to keep these developers running for long enough.

I've only met one game in my life that combined RTS and something from the first person, and it wasn't a shooter - Rise and fall: Civilizations at war. And this game was amazing. The moment when you are in the first person commanding a thousandth army to attack is unforgettable. Alas, there were no more such experiments. I really hope that something will come out of silica
About the initiative in Europe.
@@perafilozof After a little digging in my memory, I remembered a few more near-strategy games that have first-person gameplay:
Maelstrom - very different factions, the characters can choose a first-person view.

I agree with you! More options = more players, the math there is very simple.

Hi and thanks for sharing. True those two games miss such elements. But there is a number of games I have shown on my channel, both released ones and upcoming ones that have both base building and unit combat.
Need to stay making these games for Xbox game pass
hopefully some will! Thx for the comment! What are you playing now?
