30,000 km for an oil change is definitely excessive. It's interesting how long they stretch these service intervals. definitely feels like a way to keep those "parts" departments busy!
In Greece my father in laws new Kia sportage with the 1.6L hybrid , dealer says don’t change oil until 30,000km. I told him at 30K you will probably be getting a new 10,000 euros engine VS 100€ for oil change.
Full synthetic oil has a broader operating temperature range vs conventional, meaning it won't thin out easily in hot season nor thicken in cold season
Hi Brian, thanks for the clear explanation on oil types. I have a question about oil change schedules with hybrid engines. I just bought a Honda Accord hybrid and had the oil and filter changed at 786 miles, just to eliminate new engine particles. But what should my regular oil change schedule be with a hybrid? A lot of the times the engine rarely runs, and I think it mostly charges tbe generator, so it’s not even under heavy load. I only drive 3,000 miles a year, and most of my trips are less than three miles. I can’t even get the car to warm up sometimes before I turn it off 0:02 because it’s in full battery mode. I’m baffled. Maybe I’ll just default to 5,000 changes, but do you think it should be less because of all the starting and stopping of the engine when I drive? Maybe 4,000 mile oil/filter changes? I’d appreciate any insights. Thank you.
Hey Syusi. Here are my thoughts: Given your driving pattern, it might be prudent to change your oil more frequently than the standard recommendation (frequent short trips can lead to more rapid oil degradation due to the engine oil not reaching optimal operating temperature. This can cause increased moisture and sludge buildup in the oil.). A schedule of 4,000 to 5,000 miles could be beneficial in your case. This would help ensure that any contaminants are regularly removed from the engine and maintain optimal lubrication. If you can 4000-4500 miles interval would be ideal. Let me know what you think!
Thank you for your insights. I think I’ll try and maintain a schedule of 4,000 mile oil/filter changes. Or six months, whichever comes first. I appreciate you getting back to me.
In my service book, it says 30.000 km oil change. They WANT the cars to break down, i have no other explanstion.
@aciddiver1978: You are Absolutely RIGHT! The 'STEALERSHIPS' would then be able to sell MORE vehicles!!

In UK oil doesn't cost as much as labour. So it is better to learn how to change oil yourself and live happy

I use synthetic oil only because I get tired of changing the oil for my three cars! 😄
just use a blend and change every 4,500 miles....
