Here's a quote from Naren Shankar, shorunner of The Expanse, regarding the aspect ratios used:
"... We've never really done a frontier-planet kind of look on the show ever. ... What Ilus provided us was a way to kind of up the look of the show in a way we hadn't done before. We shot it in 2.39:1, so it’s a very wide aspect ratio, which gives you a sort of huge, you know, like Panavision Westerns, you get the massive, big, wild view of the world. Typically, that was done with anamorphic lenses ... so when you roll focus you see that weird shift as the picture sort of stretches and compresses; you see that in a lot of movies that are anamorphic.
"... It gave Ilus a sort of eerie, otherworldly, alien quality to it. Because as soon as you're out there, the frame is bigger, it's wider. You feel the outdoors more. You feel the horizon. That was a great opportunity. And so, if you're watching closely, we mix those different aspect ratios. When we're back on the ship, we're back in 16:9, and the frame fills up. When you're on Ilus, it's 2.39:1 and the wide frame with bars. Your brain kind of factors it out pretty easily."

Amos calls Murtry with the correct name at the bar when he confronts him at the bar.

Burn Gorman is playing Adolphus Murtry, Security Chief, which is in part why the character is being so aggressive. He is not necessarily trained or fit to be in charge of a general mission. The protocol to have the security chief as the mission second could be because there is an assumption that a mission that loses its commander is a combat/security only mission from there on out. Which as we can see from these first three episodes, while it might be reasonable on paper, it is not practically valid as operationally it creates a very uncompromising and high tension situation.
On a different matter, at the beginning of the episode after Murtry has shot Cooper, Scotty ask him, 'Are you going to kill us all?' Then the last shot of the episode is Murtry looking down at Scotty, after the REC security team has ceased firing, to say, 'I hope that answers you question.' before shooting Scotty dead. The first time I watched this it took me a moment to figure this out because I did not remember what question Murtry was referring to so, I had to go back to the beginning and re-watch that opening scene. However, I think this is a great device and a real insight into who Murtry is, which leads to the confrontation in the bar between Murtry and Amos.
Amos is not emotional and this is a huge disadvantage for Murtry, who is used to intimidating the people around him. Amos just wants to evaluate and deal with the threat, hence the 'I'm free right now.' comment. Amos just wants to get on with it, yet he knows that Holden does not like people just killing each other with out talking it through first.

The writers draw a lot from our own history, in interesting ways. In the earlier seasons, Mars was more like the USA in many ways, relative to the UN being like old Europe and the British Empire. Mars is the breakaway upstart colony which becomes a huge military power. Now Mars is showing more of a fall of the Soviet Union aspect. Their goals and purpose are falling away and the people with power in the infrastructure are turning to organised crime to get a leg up.
You're great at picking up the cinematic elements on Ilus / New Terra. Seems to me like they're emphasising the Belter point of view. They've never had a big sky (without a helmet on) or wide panoramas before. But it's also a nod to the Western genre. This is the new frontier, as was the Old West at the time. It's not just the wider aspect ratio, they are using anamorphic lenses too, which produces a look and feel you can't get any other way. I recall you've done some film studies - maybe you know about these lenses. Lots of subtle differences verses the result from just cropping an image taken with a spherical lens, but the most obvious one (besides flares and bokeh shape) is that you can be much closer to your subject while still capturing a wide vista.

18:50 in fairness to holden he did explicitly say to use a conventional warhead. "conventional" in that context means "non-nuclear".

The Illus set was filmed in a quarry, I like to think this is a nod to Dr Who and Blake's 7.😅

I would say the Martian society is more like Sparta than economically communistic. You made the connection of the "western" look of the cinematography on Illus, so I'll spill the ranch beans: The cinematography is indeed very much like that of the "spaghetti westerns" of the 60s because the basic theme of the Illus plot line is a well-used Western trope: The pioneer settlers have discovered "thar's gold in them thar hills," and the evil corporation back east has sent their goons to wrest the wealth from the settlers.
That wasn't a nuke Holden fired at the Protomolecule structure. He had said "conventional warhead." It was kind of a surprise that an ordinary high explosive worked.
At the beginning of the episode, the Belter (I think it was "Coop") had asked Murtry if he planned to kill all of them. At the end of the episode, Murtry says, "I hope this answers your question." Jumping Belter mineral claims has been Murtry's job for a long time (as he explained to the now-deceased captain of the Edward Israel), which is why he has had a bad relationship with Belters.
Curiously, not even Proto-Miller knows what's happening with the Protomolecule devices on Illus. Proto-Miller said he's just pushing buttons and investigating. That goes along with what we saw with Proto-Miller on the Ring sphere. Proto-Miller is part of the Ring-building Protomolecule device, and although he can communicate with other Protomolecule devices, he can't control them. They have their own function while he's working his own function (which now is to communicate with his builders).

Coop was the very first Belter that Murtry shot, at the end of Ep2. It's Scotty who asks the question near the beginning of this episode and received the answer from Murtry at the end.

I didn't recognise Esai Martin either - I had to take it from context, as he's shot and lit differently.
Murt - ry. Burn Gorman is an excellent actor, I've never seen him in a bad role.
Amos is a pretty good judge of character, but as you've said, he is seeing things from his own perspective.
Not that much to say here - I've really enjoyed your analysis!

Is it because you're bad wit faces that you didn't realise they changed the actor for Arjun/Avasarala's husband ?

Every time they get a chance to kill Naomi off, they blow it. So disappointing.
