I really love it when Holden just walks up and thumps him. He tried talking, he tried reasoning, he tried being fair, now he's done. Great stuff. And he is a great actor :)

Bobbie is disillusioned with everyone. She can't find ANYONE who is trustworthy anymore. Poor Bobbie. Can't trust the Mars military to make good decisions and when she does she's discharged. Can't trust the Martian people when she finds criminals. Can't trust Chrisjen so (or any politicians) to do the right thing and speak the truth. No paths left to turn down.
Mars's terraforming was delayed by over 100 years, she said as much in her first episode. They are nowhere near a breathable atmosphere or plant life or water yet, but it was (VERY slowly) coming along. But now there are over 1300 Earth-like planets out there... would you waste money making another? And with no/less military and no more terraforming... they've got no economy left. Or jobs.

Murtry's second in command, who is knocking boots with Amos, is Wei, Chandra Wei, pronounced "Way".
She's clearly already chosen her "side".
I think everyone has the same reaction towards Marco, as soon as he starts speaking. "OK, this guy is *dangerous*" Marco's claim that "They say the Ring gates have changed everything, but they have not changed the inners" is both prescient and eternal. It doesn't matter how good technology or efficiency or what discoveries we make, it won't improve the lot of most people as long as the powerful can just claim the new bounty for their own, as we're seeing on Ilus. Instead of ordinary people like the colonists making their fortunes, a big earth company is trying to claim it all. Incredible fortunes being made, and just added to the shareholder value and everyone else stays the same.
Mars wanted to Terraform, but the treat form Earth meant they had to focus on defense. As Bobby said "Terraforming delayed for 100 years and more". Martians were brought up to believe they'd have to take out Earth in order to be allowed to go ahead with terraforming.
The showrunners based the Mars story on Russia after the Soviet union fell, where a lot of the former authority turned to crime as their whole ideology and worldview collapsed. People like Bobby are desperate to feel part of something again.

2:16 - No. The entire run of the show was produced by Alcon Entertainment.
Amazon just became the distributor from S4 onwards. Budget was roughly the same on all seasons - although with Amazon the show’s production had free access to Amazon’s render farms.

So, there's actually quite a bit of life- there's more reference to flora and fauna in the books. However there's not a great deal where the colony is because it's a mining colony and you go where the ore is.
There are some references to lizard (?) analogues but i think they would have been too expensive and don't impact the main story much.
I don't think terraforming has been put on hold because of the military... Its extremely expensive never been done and untill recently the only option. Mars was unified towards a single goal and now it's .... Aimless.
    Good stuff as always Wren.😃

Scotty mentioned seeing a lizard throw up its own stomach in order to eat something larger than itself when he was being checked over by Lucia and Alex after the swarm thing. So, some larger fauna is referenced, even if not shown. As you say, not at all important to the plot. Putting in some half-baked CGI of one for no real reason would have been a bit of a George Lucas move... (ducks)

  • @Thanaeon

The thing about the Martian economy is that the opening of the gates was an absolute disaster for it. The terraforming project was a multi-century one and absurdly expensive. Only now there's 1300+ new already-inhabitable worlds out there. Under those circumstances, the people looking for new opportunities are just going to head out there and so the whole project just doesn't make economic sense anymore.
Which is a problem because it was a huge chunk of the work market on Mars, and now they're in a serious recession, not helped by the brain drain of some quite capable people wanting to take their chances building something new in a world where they have access to free air and stuff and a chance to get the founders' edge in a society. Couple that with the foundational purpose of the society being taken away from them and Mars is having a rough old time of it.

Right now, though, there is a ring blockade to pretty much everyone. Only the Belters who ran the blockade, the RCE science and mining charter for "New Terra", and the Rocinante have people who have gone through other rings - besides robotic probes. Medina Station is installing comm relays in anticipation of the blockade eventually being relaxed, but at the moment, Avasarala and (less obvious in the show) Mars and the Belt are working together to keep people from going through other rings until places are deemed to actually be safe (not just for settlers, but not having anything that might threaten all of humanity like Eros and the Ring Station did). In the books, it is clear that Avasarala has another reason besides avoiding alien threats, but we don't get that overtly in the TV show.

@@MattNolanCustom As @Thanaeon mentioned, though, the terraforming project is already projected to be a century+ endeavor...and nobody would be betting on it being a century before Ring planet colonization would be authorized. Nobody would bet that all 1300+ planets would be dangerous (they'd already all been identified as basically habitable). That would take the steam out of the terraforming concept.

@@kirkdarling4120 I know. I'm just providing some balancing commentary. Some of the Martians will see the writing on the wall, but some of them will still be wearing their blinkers, given that their entire lifetimes have been "groomed" that way.

You are raising some really good questions about the Protomolecule.
I may be wrong in this, but I think it could help to view it as a field of technology rather than one singular thing. in Sol, it was sent to establish contact to biological viability and build the faster road to access it. on Ilus, that road is already established, so we can assume that whatever the previous inhabitants were doing there, they could tailor the protomolecule to perform an intended task.
we also know that the interest in Ilus is it's minerals, mainly lithium (most known for its use in Batteries), in unnaturally high concentration and purity. could this be a clue as to what the gate builders were using the planet for?
Equally interesting are the notions on Mars, the lack of terraforming information might just be the focus of the show at this moment. one other thing to consider in the socio-political situation on mars is how the sudden appearance of 1300 inhabitable worlds would mean for the future of a terraforming effort. but other comments has already formulated this way better than I did.
thanks for your work on these videos! I enjoy seeing it with you! God Bless, Sister!

@@davidbergfors6820 I don't think so, I'd explain out why but it would be spoilery at this point. I think the proto-molecule in sol only builds ring gates. It's possible that all 'blue-guys' tech starts as a type of configured proto molecule but 'denatures' when it's done. I could be wrong though, only read books 1-5.

      @davidbergfors6820 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@no_no_just_no wasn't that what I also said? That the protomolecule in Sol had the sole job to create the ring? The tech we see in the Ilus system has different function, but it's still protomolecule (or blue glow stuff). But as you say, The arguments I have as basis for this is spoilery.

@@davidbergfors6820 that's right, I was acknowledging that you might be right, but I'm not so sure. There is a Norwegian (or, maybe she's Swedish) reactor who provided a translation. It's not _total_ gibberish, but the lyrics do take a lot of liberty with the syntax. Screwy syntax is not uncommon for popular songs in English...I don't know if it's uncommon for Norwegian songs.
