Great advice, Matt! That old saying is from Maya Angelou. We teach people how to treat us. If a man says he's going to call and I don't hear from him, I forget he exists. If he calls again a few days later, I tell him, "You said you would call the other day and I didn't hear from you. Do you have trouble following through? Because it's important that the people I surround myself with are dependable." If he apologizes, he gets another chance. If he gets upset, I tell him I'm not looking for someone who isn't reliable, so we are not compatible. I wish you the best.

@Life so centered this is awesome comment bcoz my situation is very like this one honestly now we never been spoken 4 days we get arguments about this calling thing he said he gonna call after he talk to his sister but nearly 3 hours i check my phone again no calls so i get cranky send more than two text messages why and why and so on then after how many minutes he responds with anger so i decide to need some space and i give him space to and tell to him my last word and yes i am wrong with my reaction that over emotions on it rather just to leave him without confronting.Now i just leave to god all process and i start to renew myself for who iam an makes what makes me happy.

I had a man who prioritized his friends alot i told him he needs to balance betweem his time with his friends and our relationship he claimed i am complaining and played the victim claiming that he doesnt seem to be enough. I left him with no second thought and it has been very peaceful. Never be afraid to communicate your concerns. Fear can keep u in misery.

I think it's still important to speak your mind tho and where you stand, but also carry yourself in a way that he's not your world and you are okay with walking away.

If I would have seen this 3 years ago, I wouldn't be sitting here right now saying to myself, I've wasted 3 years of my life.
It really depends. One of my best buddies was very easy going, he loved his girlfriend but from her perspective, he wasn't giving her enough.
She was also a bit too much, since she was jealous and in general very very scared of him hanging out with friends (kept checking on him etc.).
She spoke up and they talked. They found the middle ground. After 6 years, they are not only still a couple, but got themselves a new place and are actually genuinely happy together.
It really depends on the situation and the worst one can do is assume that every situation will be the same, not even giving it a second chance.
When he wasn't making me feel like a priority it hurt so I backed all the way off. He realized it and changed towards me for the better.

When the relationship isn't being prioritized 1 I communicated concern 2 if nothing changed I moved on because I don't have time for someone who doesn't make me a priority in their life.

I did exactly what you described, Mat and I hadn't even watched the video yet. I just knew I had to be willing to lose this person because the relationship that I want and deserve is more important to me than this person.
After 2 months I knew it wasn't right when he only text and never called ever after I stated my feelings about texting. He was wonderful when we saw each other, but never made plans to spend time to get to know me. He only spoke about himself, never asked anything about me. His actions didnt match his words. Sad, cause it might have been great had he got to know me. One persons loss is another's treasure.

sounds ike my senario, guy never asked one question about me and my background, I could write a book on him, never again, very self absorbed, his actiosna nd words never matched, gave me nothing in 1 1/2 years, he was never invested I know now
Wow this sounds exactly like my situation !
I had a Frank conversation with him after 2 months of dating, he finally accepted he felt deeply for me but not deep enough to put in the effort to see me 45mins away. He claimed in the winter months he doesn't travel. He continued to treat me like a girlfriend, but I wanted us to see others. So, I simply said no. Now we talk once in a while but each moved on. Although it was painful as we created memories, it's now been three weeks and the pain is less and less.
Each time I noticed him ignoring me, making us excuses not to see me, and being unable to treat me with the bare minimum, I SPOKE UP. Told him time and time again that I wanted him to give me the qualities of a loving relationship. Each time I was assertive, he lost respect for me. He always found a way to turn it against me, making me think I was the crazy one. Making me think I’m the one that needs to change my mindset. He always made me regret speaking up at all.
And I’m still with him. Because yes, I love him, and even if I deserve so much better I still fantasize about him changing and treating me better some day. I’m so stupid… but this video really opened up my eyes. It made me realize I need to stop crying about him and wait for someone who will give me what I need. Someone who wants to give the love I give, the love I DESERVE.
I really just need a push in the right direction.

Hope you have figured it out. I was recently thinking, I wonder if it comes from childhood and loosing someone we loved. Accepting standards we were used to seeing, mirroring. Different for everyone of course :)
@@nt3840 I'm certainly figuring it out. And I think you're spot on. I did lose someone when I was young: my grandmother. It was an impactful event in my young life that should have led to grief counseling, but sadly, did not.

I really just need to learn how to express my standards without coming off as harsh. I end up not saying anything at all because I’m afraid how it will come across. A script would be nice 😄
The key is to control your emotions and tone of voice and follow through with what you are saying. Basically, you can let someone know this isn't working for me because I want a partner who follows through with his promises. (no need to show negative emotion in your voice but it could even be in a kind tone) What I think the key is for you to know what you want and what you need to do if this person can't fulfill that and to follow through. Being able to do so in a respectful way shows what kind of person you are. I think you got this. :)

When a man chooses not you and a relationship with you, but chooses friends or work or another woman in general - then you should not just think about your choice, but seriously make a decision: to be with this man. Is a man ready to change for you and your life together. Is the man ready to do something, and not just declare his future actions.
You can't hang around waiting for him to get over his issues - that could take years!
The fact that he is playing mind games with you and stringing you along with false hope is cruel and unfair.
As for me, I decided to move on with my life with someone who wasn't just keeping me around as a backup plan.

You are so right. I was in this situation and did exactly what you suggested and it worked. After 33 years the relationship with my husband was going in the wrong direction and when I made up my mind what I want and told him that he changed to his better self. And I had the feeling that I am not appreciated. Told him that I will leave the house to be on my own. I had the feeling he does not need me or want me in his life. I decided to go my own way. But still open to work on my marriage. I did not move out because he made a 180 turn. He asked me hiw I am doing, tells me his plans and let me be part of his life again.

When he wasn’t stepping up I stated my standard and back off. Began focusing more on myself and things I enjoyed. I shifted the energy back to myself. I continue to say to myself him or someone better.
True on speaking up. The first time I told him I was out because of him allegedly “meeting someone else and her being my competition”, he came back full force 🤔 But now, I’m just about done with this 2nd bout of ghosting 🙄

I told him what I wanted and expected. He started gas lighting me, making it to be my fault. I could see right there and then that explanation is futile. This is a person who will never own up regardless of how diplomatic I approach the subject so I left, thanked him, and never communicated again.

I think I did all three before seeing this video, it’s just hard when you don’t want to hurt their feelings and they still not sure how to help you or put efforts in making the relationship better. Sometimes trying to make things work out is just making me think if I actually know myself or what I actually think is me thinking. Like what if what I’m thinking is not what I’m thinking. I don’t even know what I’m talking anymore. 😔 Sometimes I just feel like I have to wait and see what he’s going to do, stay or leave me, because I just don’t want to hurt his feelings by leaving him to waiting for him to leave me to a better woman who can change him and make him a better man to where he wants to be.😔💔

Oh goodness. I accept breadcrumbs. In 2017 I told my husband I wanted and needed a light above my black kitchen sink in our new home. A few days later he got to work on a new light in the dining room which was on the exact opposite of the kitchen sink. He spent two days changing the switch to a dimmer switch so that way I have to stand at the switch and push the button for the light to come on in the dining room. It has nothing to do with helping me see in the kitchen. I still don't have a light above the kitchen sink. Last month, he knew i was sleeping and he set off FOUR bug foggers under our mobile home. He clains it was a mistake and he wasn't thinking. He's upset that I am leaving him and that I can't forgive him for what he's done. Thank you for this video. Makes so much sense to me.

I am just putting it out there as I am struggling to get an answer.
Of late I have been struggling with my mental health. Is it wrong of me to expect my partner to take a special interest in understanding and making me feel better?
He has had his own struggles in the past which makes expressing his emotions difficult, which I understand. So, I tend to feel guilty at present for asking him to be more emotionally presen an make slightly more effort than usual while I find my way.
I backed off after giving it some time. Wish I could have done it sooner but was too hard for me.
My partner is treating me like a queen. I have shared boundaries with him and called him on some behaviors. He actually listened and asked what he he could do differently so he didn't hurt me like that again. After 6 months together, there is one thing that bothers me. I haven't said anything because it's something that should naturally progress as time goes by. He hasn't introduced me to any of his friends or family. I don't know if they even know about me. If I said it bothered me and all of a sudden he started doing it, I would feel he was only doing it because I complained, not because he really wanted me to meet them. Is there a time frame when I should expect to meet these people by?

@chippychick6261 things have changed some since I wrote this. I have met 2 of his friends now, the only 2 I have ever heard him talk about. His family is out of state, so actually getting together would be difficult, but one sister has called when I'm with him. He will leave the room, or if we are in the car, he doesn't acknowledge who he's with. I have gotten to where I feel like whatever dude. He is shy/reserved, and been married before, so I'm allowing that he takes longer to be assured the relationship is more solid. I'm not picking up any other red flag type issues. Everything seems great. This just irked me.
Mat, what if I just love him way too much that I'm gonna just accept poor treatment rather than losing him? I wish I had less wonderful memories with him. It is way too difficult to end and I don't want to end even if I know he cannot give what I really want. I guess I stayed too long. But he was the one who made me able to stand hard times...
what do you do when you have been in a 1.5 year relationship and he puts his sister and mother first? He lives with his sister as he bought a house with her and cancels plans with me to stay at home and listen to his sister's arguments. If she had an argument she would text him and he wouldn't be present with me. He doesn't see me as often as he used to. We had Saturday's and Sunday's together and now i barely get 4 hours a week or less. I told him that my needs are to see him more and he said yes to seeing me tonight. Then cancelled last minute because he came home to his sister talking to her spouse. They are not in an abusive relationship.
He has no boundaries with his family and will never back you up; move on.
