I’m glad this movie was made. I was an 11B who ETS’d over a decade ago, so over time people sometimes lose contact with each other. But when the Taliban retook Afghanistan people were coming out of the woodwork to make sure our Terp made it out. It was crazy people reconnecting after so long with the willingness just to go back with zero support from our Government just to make sure our terp “Dave” and his family were ok. Luckily he made it out and is happily living here in the states.
Love to hear this sort of stuff brother, I’m still in, one of our soldiers doing maintenance on our Vic’s. Had family in Afghanistan too, I was making calls pushing emails moving things to the best of my abilities to help my boy get his family into the states after his brother and father inlaw helped our country with Terp work and medical in the small Embassy there in Kabul. I felt a breath of relief once I saw he got them here in the states.. Felt a sense of guilt with the way we got pulled out from the Stan.
Kurt is looking more like black Jesus. Someone needs to do a photoshop where you put Kurt's face on a Jesus portrait with him handing out the bread and the angel wings or something.
I liked that it was implied that Ahmed would work for John when he went to America by showing that he was a mechanic and him owning a vintage car repair shop.
Jake Gyllenhal has an aura about him, every closed up shot of his face conveys exactly what he wanted us to feel about the situation like no other actor I've seen. I mean he doesn't even need to try it's so natural.
This was an incredible film. The connection between the forces and interpreter is something never shown before. There are ALOT of people that helped that got forgotten.

I was in the US Army Corps of Engineers working as a Hydroelectric mechanic supervisor. I volunteered for duty in Afghanistan. I was prior service so it wasnt a big deal. I was in charge of operations and maintenance at the ANA base, camp Sayer, and police stations in Farah Afghanistan. I had to go to these sites, talk to the officials, make inspections and submit reports to my supervisor in Kandahar. I had an interpreter Hamid uhllah that greatly assisted me. Later when I was back in the States, I learned of the troop pull out at Fob Farah. I knew my interpreter's life was in danger and the Taliban would certainly kill him for assisting the US Gov. I managed to get him and his immediate family a special Visa to the USA. He lives in Up state New York now with a job and is buying a house. He told his daughters the story of how he came to the US. His daughters sent me an email with a hand drawn picture of Superman with my name on it. They said I was their "Hero".
How did you get him the visa? I don't know who Gyllenhaal was calling but I was wondering why he didn't call his Congressional representative or tell his story to CNN or something instead of sitting on hold for 35 days.
Is it OK to put out that info and name ????? Meaning has taliban actively tried to go outside Afghanistan or Pakistan to collect reward or tried to come to USA that you know off
Good stuff boys. As the military consultant on this movie, there are explanations for all the consistencies. Some mandated and some due to creative direction. But appreciate the review 🙏🏽👊🏽

Just some parts of being a consultant that won’t make sense to people who don’t consult: red tape, big shot directors and dept heads who can make your life easy or hard.

Dar Salim who is playing the interpreter is a Danish actor who also was in the movie "A war" witch was oscar nominated. ps. A War used reel afghan veterans soldiers ( including myself) from the Danish Royal Guards.
23:55 the reason it feels so real is because of sound design, the slam of metal to metal from a bullet going through your hand and ricocheting off the radio with a heavy clang and a meaty separation of your fingers is intense.
The M2 when they get ambushed is a really good example of this as well. The fire rate is wrong and the deepness was completely missing. You could even tell he’s just pulling it back and forth to look like it’s recoiling.
One of the things I most loved about this movie, and my wife commented on as well, was the Army culture portrayal. She said to me as we were watching it: That so reminds me of you and your guys throughout the years, how you act, behave, and treat each other.
I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. I was a bit confused about the team Sgt situation as well so I appreciate the explanation. I 100% agree on how great it was to see a lead operator that wasn't like 150% testosterone explosion and was much more grounded than some other action movies.
@@jonathanramos8414One of the things that made Predator so good, and The Predator so scary, was how they established just how badass Arnold & his team were such study badasses early in the film. They had the physical prowess, the tactical skill & a massive arsenal. And then they introduce the Predator & he starts picking them off like it’s nothing-like he’s playing with his food, basically. I forget the name of the actor who played the Predator but he was a literal giant. Arnold’s about 6’2”. The Predator’s actor was something like 7’4”. And the costume made him look even bigger. It was a nice touch. They did something similar in Conan the Destroyer when they signed Wilt Chamberlain onto the movie. Wilt was a little over 7’1”, weighed something like 310 & was a solid wall of muscle.
Michael Mann has always had realistic gunfights. His Miami Vice was the same as Heat, the sounds of the gunfire, the vibrations of bullets hitting around you etc were all far better than other movies

Awesome review guys. Is the title a reference to "Blood is thicker than water"? Most people mis-interpret this shorter saying to mean that family is most important. But the original saying is "Blood of the covenant of battle is thicker than the water of the womb" and references that soldiers that fought together have a stronger bond than even family members. Hence him risking everything to go back for his interpreter.
There is no actual evidence that that is the original saying. There are a few authors (iirc) who make that assertion, but they never provide any evidence. Meanwhile "Blood is thicker than water" in that form was first recorded in the mid 1600s. I think the longer saying is a modern rebuttal because it is more popular now for people to cut themselves off from family.

Probably the most deep and heart-wrenching dialogue in this movie.. If it wasn't enough for him to carry me access the mountains. Now I can't get him out of my fuc*in head. I'm lying in this bed. I kiss my children before they go to school. And he's hiding in a hole somewhere. A hole he can never get out of. A hole we put him in. That wasn't the deal. The deal was that we offered his family sanctuary. But we tied a noose around his neck and kicked the stool out from his under. I should be in that hole. You think he blessed you? Well he fuc*in cursed me. I am a man who gets no rest.
it's a sh*t line from a director and writter trying to wring money out of a crap scenario that never occurs in real life, on top of a horrible withdrawl which clearly went wrong. In real life if you suddenly learn that your interpreter was formerly affiliated with a terrorist organization and didn't tell you, you get the fk away from that situation! How many people died bc terrorists sent 'infiltrators" and the US military was too stupid to remove them?? How many? This movie's premise is sh*t! It's a disturbed fantasy from a much of distrubed minds. I never liked Gyllenhaal much, now I like him even less. Guy Richie was always a tool, so not much of a surprise there.... of course he's gonna find something to exploit in every tragedy.

Like Buck said if you’ve never been shot at you don’t know what it’s like, once you have been though, whether they are missing you by inches or even a couple feet it’s a sound you’ll never forget, that hissing snap of the bullet breaking the sound barrier flying by your head or body you can feel the pressure wave they generate, and you hear that sharp bang as they fire, with outgoing rounds you just hear the boom, and that’s one way to differentiate incoming and outgoing fire.
I was stationed at bagram in 2014. Airborne Infantry, 1-504 of the 82nd. We were tasked with QRF. But also other missions. Took ch47s off that very airfield many tines..into the night. To all my fellow afghan deployed brothers..love yall. Wish yall the best.
The series SEAL Team (I know your eyes are probably rolling) used true-kit including plates etc. The actors even ran and filmed completely under NODs for night scenes etc. Tyler Grey (I'm sure you guys are familiar) had input for the series as well as being an actor. The gunfights aren't Lone Survivor quality, but a lot of the movements are at least mostly-realistic (for actors). Any of the really technical acts I noticed are typically performed by Tyler's character (medical, demo, vehicle scenes etc.) which adds to the realism. You guys should check it out.
Yeah, I was really surprised with how good the show is! Especially the scenes where they're flowing through clearing rooms quietly, where most "Hollywood" productions would have everyone yelling "CLEAR" every two seconds.
24:32 Lone Survivor sounds better cuz they used actual guns and sim rounds. The Covenant used high end air soft guns and added the sound effects in post.
I love how black hawk down made a scene just for the sound of being shot at. The practical effects for that movie were crazy from the blanks to squibs blowing up to simulate bullet impacts. In the scene when the gunner fires the m249 over the m60 gunner you can see the muzzle blast even from the blanks and then they used a ton of squibs for the bullet impacts. Not to mention they actually threw the actors into all this the realism really pays off.

There's a big difference between translate & interprete a situation. translate basically deals with language, while interpretation is to explain everything around you.

John Krasinski's phone call home to his wife is still the single best acted scene in a war movie. Another STELLAR acting scene (although not a soldier) is Tom Hanks and Danielle Albert in the final scene of Capt Phillips when Danielle who is a real Navy Corpsmen treats him at the end. Tom Hanks knocks that out of the park and Danielle does what she does. Total professional
That's one of the great things about this movie. Jake's character knew he wouldn't have peace until he did everything he could to help his terp. You might call it honor but it's different. It's a debt on his very soul.
I was skeptic when I saw a long reaction video for this one. I didn't really know if y'all were about to trash the fuck out of this or glorify it to heaven and beyond! As an Air Force guy that used to work alongside of the American Air Force back to Afghanistan, I really enjoyed watching this movie as Afghan. I really appreciate these two gentlemen for supper performance. And also even though Ahmed was not from Afghanistan but he did a brilliant performance. And also Jake ♥️ After the collapse I feel broken 🥹💔 Much respect for both of you And please us on your prayers 💔🇦🇫
47:17 They did that for the show Seal Team. They use real plates, ballistic helmets, and the actors are using actual PVS-31s at night. Yea that show has some issues but it's pretty friggin good given the average kit you see in military shows/movies
Thanks for pointing out the pristine bump helmets. That was one of the things immediately that completely took me out of the authenticity from the jump. Shouldn't have bothered me as much as it did but it just looked so out of place.
It's interesting you guys point out Jake's ability to act out the scene that doesn't really put him into a realistic mindset. Because he did End of Watch where he patrolled with actual police officers to prep for the role, doing some training and going to actual crime scenes with him. Pretty interesting to think bout.
Since you guys liked this so much, and since you've done HEAT, I'd love to see you guys do a breakdown of Wrath of Man. It's a heist/revenge film by Guy Ritchie, the same director as The Covenant, and it features Jason Statham in some really cool gunfights.
This was such a strange movie, but I loved it. It was an American war movie by a very British director that seemed focused on the Afghans. Stylistically different.
Just watched this today and thought it was awesome! Just wish they would have cleared the room better in the one scene. I knew the building was too big to be cleared and relaxed that quick.
The other reason the first big fight doesn’t feel realistic is because they’re using a set that other TV shows and movies use. I swear I’ve seen that set get raided before on Seal Team.
47:17 Lone survivor they actually got the actors into fake firefights in the woods, for them to experience. They were taught how to manipulate weapons and move like soldiers, and than they fought against an ambush of former military dressed as Taliban. You can see it on youtube the making of. Looks to be a ballistic ops core fast helmet. Iiia rated. A bump would have holes on top. Should be a polyethylene pistol rated one. If it was the rf1 it could handle .30 cal rifle or the ech. Fast costs 2k$ rf 1 is about 3k$ and rhe ech is about 600.$
Sean nailed it - yes, sound can make or break a shootout scene. Good job pointing out Heat and Lone Survivor - Michael Mann does these really well in all of his movies. As for Mr. Gyllenhal - he has HUGE respect for military and law enforcement communities - he did some patroling with the LAPD before filming End of Watch, so I'd pick him for movies like these every time. Another item missed in final battle scene is when Jake goes dry, at least he says, he’s out. When he walks onto the bird, he has one mag left. Maybe he cross loaded when he got picked up and I missed it. Nit picking.

Part of I _ _ , during Planning. Fly your own drone. I retired in 2015, my last deployment was 2013…. TF was in Retrograde mode. Reg Army was being pulled back, teams were alone. I was turning in equipment like crazy. Those mud houses aren’t made for the convenience for the American soldier. We stood in Marjah for a few days and the house we occupied had a 2 foot high mud blockage built in the door way… so when I was running back and forth checking on guys, I had to hurdle that shit in gear 100 times a day. I was screaming, who does this shit! By day 3 I just sat on it and spun around. When you were explaining the sounds and feelings of incoming rounds and bombs….. my heart started racing, I’m 54 years old. Don’t give me a heart attack. I remember 500 pound bombshell dropping so close, when they hit the dust that was on everything around you, shook off and felt like it was in slow motion. My jaw would hurt, stomach would hurt. I was screaming, who does this shit! Fun times.
I've been debating mentioning it for a while but now since you guys brought up The Green Berets, I'm going to say you guys should review Zulu (1964). My favorite war movie growing up. A few reasons why: it'd be interesting to see you guys bringing your perspective to events taking place in 1800s-era warfare. It's also a relatively unbiased and relatively accurate account of the engagement during which the highest amount of Victoria Crosses (British equivalent of the MOH) were awarded. Finally, it was Michael Caine's first movie.
The movie was partly shot in an Spanish Air Force Base outside Zaragoza. AFAIK the US military doesn't use the overpriced A400M cargo plane. Also, parts of the gear used in the movie was locally procured...In Airsoft shops.
For the record, 12 Strong was based on a true story detailed in a book called Horse Soldiers about the first SF sent to Afghanistan after 9/11. Thr movie was crap, but in the real events SF DID ride horses into battle with the Afghans.
Please get to the OG Green Berets John Wayne movie as a kid I loved it! I know it can't compete with modern military films but it was fun to watch as a kid.
The whole time watching this movie I kept on seeing Jake's character as an on screen personification of Cole Fackler from GBRS Group. Mannerisms, facial expressions, tonality, all extremely similar.
Pretty sure the helmets are ballistic. Bump helmets, such as the Ops-Core, usually have holes in the top for ventilation. Ballistic ones are solid (for obvious reasons) like the ones in the movie.
Also with assets if your call comes in for IED strike at the same time another unit is in direct contact you might get the medevac but they are getting the apaches

Those helmets look like ballistic helmets to me. Ops core has holes in the top cut out for the bump helmets. They might be carbon bumps though, last time I checked those don't have holes but are significantly lighter than the ballistic helmets.
So the main question in the movie watching it is why the lack of assets. I felt that sf guys would have small groups hi asset missions. It broke my heart seeing them get smoked, because they didn't have assets. I felt it was possible to happen but didn't really know if it was authentic. This review cleared that up. Its because there where going off the cuff. This explanation added a thick layer of authenticity . Thank you for you service. (19d 2005-2009)
So I was curious about the lack of cans and the fact they appear to be using HK416's with ACOGs, which was weirding me out...then looking into it apparently most of the movie, they were kitted out with either props or airsoft guns. Not really a jab at the movie but I mean.... c'mon.

23:55 the reason it feels so real is because of sound design, the slam of metal to metal from a bullet going through your hand and ricocheting off the radio with a heavy clang and a meaty separation of your fingers is intense.
The M2 when they get ambushed is a really good example of this as well. The fire rate is wrong and the deepness was completely missing. You could even tell he’s just pulling it back and forth to look like it’s recoiling.
One of the things I most loved about this movie, and my wife commented on as well, was the Army culture portrayal. She said to me as we were watching it: That so reminds me of you and your guys throughout the years, how you act, behave, and treat each other.
I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. I was a bit confused about the team Sgt situation as well so I appreciate the explanation. I 100% agree on how great it was to see a lead operator that wasn't like 150% testosterone explosion and was much more grounded than some other action movies.

They had the physical prowess, the tactical skill & a massive arsenal. And then they introduce the Predator & he starts picking them off like it’s nothing-like he’s playing with his food, basically. I forget the name of the actor who played the Predator but he was a literal giant. Arnold’s about 6’2”. The Predator’s actor was something like 7’4”. And the costume made him look even bigger.
It was a nice touch. They did something similar in Conan the Destroyer when they signed Wilt Chamberlain onto the movie. Wilt was a little over 7’1”, weighed something like 310 & was a solid wall of muscle.

Michael Mann has always had realistic gunfights. His Miami Vice was the same as Heat, the sounds of the gunfire, the vibrations of bullets hitting around you etc were all far better than other movies

Is the title a reference to "Blood is thicker than water"? Most people mis-interpret this shorter saying to mean that family is most important. But the original saying is "Blood of the covenant of battle is thicker than the water of the womb" and references that soldiers that fought together have a stronger bond than even family members. Hence him risking everything to go back for his interpreter.
There is no actual evidence that that is the original saying. There are a few authors (iirc) who make that assertion, but they never provide any evidence. Meanwhile "Blood is thicker than water" in that form was first recorded in the mid 1600s. I think the longer saying is a modern rebuttal because it is more popular now for people to cut themselves off from family.

How many people died bc terrorists sent 'infiltrators" and the US military was too stupid to remove them?? How many? This movie's premise is sh*t! It's a disturbed fantasy from a much of distrubed minds. I never liked Gyllenhaal much, now I like him even less. Guy Richie was always a tool, so not much of a surprise there.... of course he's gonna find something to exploit in every tragedy.

just as a little tidbit for 43:38 for the firearms in the movie, they mostly used Gas blowback airsoft guns in the movie, just as a safety measure.
Like Buck said if you’ve never been shot at you don’t know what it’s like, once you have been though, whether they are missing you by inches or even a couple feet it’s a sound you’ll never forget, that hissing snap of the bullet breaking the sound barrier flying by your head or body you can feel the pressure wave they generate, and you hear that sharp bang as they fire, with outgoing rounds you just hear the boom, and that’s one way to differentiate incoming and outgoing fire.

The series SEAL Team (I know your eyes are probably rolling) used true-kit including plates etc. The actors even ran and filmed completely under NODs for night scenes etc.
Tyler Grey (I'm sure you guys are familiar) had input for the series as well as being an actor. The gunfights aren't Lone Survivor quality, but a lot of the movements are at least mostly-realistic (for actors). Any of the really technical acts I noticed are typically performed by Tyler's character (medical, demo, vehicle scenes etc.) which adds to the realism. You guys should check it out.
SEAL Team is great! Buck even said so in the previous Terminal List breakdown.
Yeah, I was really surprised with how good the show is! Especially the scenes where they're flowing through clearing rooms quietly, where most "Hollywood" productions would have everyone yelling "CLEAR" every two seconds.

The battle sound in Master & Commander is an amazing example of what you are talking about regarding Lone Survivor gunfight scenes.
I love how black hawk down made a scene just for the sound of being shot at. The practical effects for that movie were crazy from the blanks to squibs blowing up to simulate bullet impacts. In the scene when the gunner fires the m249 over the m60 gunner you can see the muzzle blast even from the blanks and then they used a ton of squibs for the bullet impacts. Not to mention they actually threw the actors into all this the realism really pays off.

Another STELLAR acting scene (although not a soldier) is Tom Hanks and Danielle Albert in the final scene of Capt Phillips when Danielle who is a real Navy Corpsmen treats him at the end. Tom Hanks knocks that out of the park and Danielle does what she does. Total professional

47:17 They did that for the show Seal Team. They use real plates, ballistic helmets, and the actors are using actual PVS-31s at night. Yea that show has some issues but it's pretty friggin good given the average kit you see in military shows/movies
Thanks for pointing out the pristine bump helmets. That was one of the things immediately that completely took me out of the authenticity from the jump. Shouldn't have bothered me as much as it did but it just looked so out of place.
It's interesting you guys point out Jake's ability to act out the scene that doesn't really put him into a realistic mindset. Because he did End of Watch where he patrolled with actual police officers to prep for the role, doing some training and going to actual crime scenes with him. Pretty interesting to think bout.
Since you guys liked this so much, and since you've done HEAT, I'd love to see you guys do a breakdown of Wrath of Man. It's a heist/revenge film by Guy Ritchie, the same director as The Covenant, and it features Jason Statham in some really cool gunfights.

This was such a strange movie, but I loved it. It was an American war movie by a very British director that seemed focused on the Afghans. Stylistically different.

Just watched this today and thought it was awesome! Just wish they would have cleared the room better in the one scene. I knew the building was too big to be cleared and relaxed that quick.
The other reason the first big fight doesn’t feel realistic is because they’re using a set that other TV shows and movies use. I swear I’ve seen that set get raided before on Seal Team.
47:17 Lone survivor they actually got the actors into fake firefights in the woods, for them to experience. They were taught how to manipulate weapons and move like soldiers, and than they fought against an ambush of former military dressed as Taliban. You can see it on youtube the making of. Also Saving Private Ryan had a military boot camp that sucked ass for the actors, and Tom Hanks volunteered to be part of it (he was the only one who didnt need to, but he did)

Sean nailed it - yes, sound can make or break a shootout scene. Good job pointing out Heat and Lone Survivor - Michael Mann does these really well in all of his movies. As for Mr. Gyllenhal - he has HUGE respect for military and law enforcement communities - he did some patroling with the LAPD before filming End of Watch, so I'd pick him for movies like these every time. Another item missed in final battle scene is when Jake goes dry, at least he says, he’s out. When he walks onto the bird, he has one mag left. Maybe he cross loaded when he got picked up and I missed it. Nit picking.

Part of I _ _ , during Planning. Fly your own drone. I retired in 2015, my last deployment was 2013…. TF was in Retrograde mode. Reg Army was being pulled back, teams were alone. I was turning in equipment like crazy.
Those mud houses aren’t made for the convenience for the American soldier. We stood in Marjah for a few days and the house we occupied had a 2 foot high mud blockage built in the door way… so when I was running back and forth checking on guys, I had to hurdle that shit in gear 100 times a day. I was screaming, who does this shit! By day 3 I just sat on it and spun around. When you were explaining the sounds and feelings of incoming rounds and bombs….. my heart started racing, I’m 54 years old. Don’t give me a heart attack. I remember 500 pound bombshell dropping so close, when they hit the dust that was on everything around you, shook off and felt like it was in slow motion. My jaw would hurt, stomach would hurt. I was screaming, who does this shit! Fun times.

I've been debating mentioning it for a while but now since you guys brought up The Green Berets, I'm going to say you guys should review Zulu (1964). My favorite war movie growing up. A few reasons why: it'd be interesting to see you guys bringing your perspective to events taking place in 1800s-era warfare. It's also a relatively unbiased and relatively accurate account of the engagement during which the highest amount of Victoria Crosses (British equivalent of the MOH) were awarded. Finally, it was Michael Caine's first movie.

The movie was partly shot in an Spanish Air Force Base outside Zaragoza. AFAIK the US military doesn't use the overpriced A400M cargo plane. Also, parts of the gear used in the movie was locally procured...In Airsoft shops.
For the record, 12 Strong was based on a true story detailed in a book called Horse Soldiers about the first SF sent to Afghanistan after 9/11. Thr movie was crap, but in the real events SF DID ride horses into battle with the Afghans.
Please get to the OG Green Berets John Wayne movie as a kid I loved it! I know it can't compete with modern military films but it was fun to watch as a kid.

The whole time watching this movie I kept on seeing Jake's character as an on screen personification of Cole Fackler from GBRS Group. Mannerisms, facial expressions, tonality, all extremely similar.
Pretty sure the helmets are ballistic. Bump helmets, such as the Ops-Core, usually have holes in the top for ventilation. Ballistic ones are solid (for obvious reasons) like the ones in the movie.

Those helmets look like ballistic helmets to me. Ops core has holes in the top cut out for the bump helmets. They might be carbon bumps though, last time I checked those don't have holes but are significantly lighter than the ballistic helmets.

So the main question in the movie watching it is why the lack of assets. I felt that sf guys would have small groups hi asset missions. It broke my heart seeing them get smoked, because they didn't have assets. I felt it was possible to happen but didn't really know if it was authentic. This review cleared that up. Its because there where going off the cuff. This explanation added a thick layer of authenticity . Thank you for you service. (19d 2005-2009)

So I was curious about the lack of cans and the fact they appear to be using HK416's with ACOGs, which was weirding me out...then looking into it apparently most of the movie, they were kitted out with either props or airsoft guns. Not really a jab at the movie but I mean.... c'mon.
