I'm intrigued by the Scag 21" 223cc mower. A great dealer that's close to me carries them and not the Bad Boy. I love my HRX217, 200cc from 2021. Maybe the 2021 Honda factory line had a good quality control going on at the time compared to the 2023 models. The Honda HRX217 with nexite deck is probably the best for light weight to high power ratio and quality cut out there. My 2021 HRX, 200cc, is definitely faster than yours, but that's because mine only has 105 hours on it.
HRX gets a little better with a little more engine rpm. Ground speed picks up a little too. Also have set my HRX speed cable adjustment to slightly creeping when engaged at the lowest speed on the lever rather than no movement at the slowest setting. Makes it go a nice brisk pace at full speed and being able to let back on the bail to lower the speed temporarily since it’s a hydro is great.
You mentioned cut quality with the Honda, it has a twin blade set for a fine cut. How is the BadBoy blade setup in comparison? Those shades remind me of back to the Future with Doc.
It’s just a single blade but cuts as well as the Honda.
Just purchased my first home in October of last year. I am dreading buying a nice self propelled mower. They are stupid expensive especially after buying a home
Nice video. Just want to say idle down the mower for 30 seconds before shutting off. You will prolong the life of any engine.
HRX engine speed sounds a bit slow. I remember thinking that it was too slow in your HRX vs HRC video, and the faster engine speed of your HRC crushed your HRX in that video. Do you still have the governor spring on the center hole of the governor arm? The top hole will raise engine speed 150rpm and still be within manufacture spec. If memory is correct center hole is 2900rpm and top hole is 3050rpm. 3200+ is preferred for the best cut on a 21". Most commercial 21" mowers are set at 3200+

Hello, I would like to know if you have mulched with the Ybravo 21” mower with the mulch liner attachment installed( it has kickers similar to toro super recycler). If so how well did it perform? Thanks, Marty.
Yes that’s how are use it 99% of the time and it works just fine.

Trying to research for next mulching mower.leaning toward 190cc toro super recycler although it seems to have occasional engine issues ( Briggs and Stratton).Scag 21” super expensive not sure if mulches well.Too bad non of these come with stacked blade system.
@@julieandmartyo7308 I would try to find a used Honda maybe something that’s like five or six years old of the same model you have. They for sure cut better than any other 21 inch mower out there.

Bad thing about the BadBoy is the speed. There is no in between slow and fast. I don’t like that and wouldn’t buy one

I have a lawn care business and all we use is Honda. I dont like just having 2 speeds on the bad boy I have had both.

I wish you had the newer 200 cc Honda hrx the compared it to, Also have you considered trying out the Scag sfc 21 with the 7 horsepower Kohler 224 engine!
No I did not consider the Scag as its 2k with the 7hp and I did not want to spend that much. I would like to try it out though.
@@GwinnettLawns dang I didn't know, it was it was going to retail 1400 to 1500 originally and I even thought that was kind of crazy at that point might as well just order a replacement mower deck self-propelled parts and a engine then build the mower you want your self. lol I'm sorry but scag is kinda throwing, no good!
@@richardcrim3831 The new Scag 21" is also quite a bit heavier than the Toro, Exmark, Honda commercial 21". They all weigh around 120-125 lbs. The Scag weighs 145 lbs. That's a lot of extra weight for a 21" mower.
@@joeraptor1 I didn't know that. That sucks why would anybody buy that at that weight, that's wide area mower territory. I wish they offered a more budget-friendly model with the Briggs & Stratton 223cc engine it would be like three hundred bucks cheaper and lighter.
@@richardcrim3831 Scag does have a lower version of their commercial 21. It comes with a 173 cc or 5 hp Kohler Command Pro engine. The weight, however, is only slightly less at 137 lbs. I have seen a few people replace the Kawasaki FJ180 engine on their Toro commercial 21" with the Kohler 224 cc you see on the Scag. This didn't increase the weight of the unit that much but gave it a lot more power. The Scag 21" does look like a great machine but the weight is definitely a drawback as well as the cost. I'm from Canada. Up here, the Scag 21" is selling for $2500 Canadian. Same with the Toro and Exmark 21". A high end homeowner unit like the Toro Super Recycler or Honda HRX goes for $1200 of 1/2 the cost of the commercial units.

your HRX seems slow.. I sped mine up.. trust me when I say that from the dealer they are not turned up all the way.. im a fast walker and the way I have my HRX217 set up I have to take the speed control down a notch or the mower is wanting to take me for a ride.. not like I have to jog or anything but it will move.. where the cable goes into the speed control lever , there is an adjusting nut.. tighten that jam nut so there are more threads showing.. ie pulls out more cable it will increase the maximum speed of the mower.. by quite a bit.. those cables stretch so you may not need to do anything to your drive system other than adjust out the cable. wow you guys mow your yards short down there!! here in the spring(ohio) im mowimng at 3.5" for march and april.. and part of may if its still raining a lot.. then 3" the rest of the time.. I will mow 2.5" for the final cut.. I thyink we are mainly kentucky bluegrass up here.. to me both of your mowers cut the same.. at least ion camera I cant tell the difference.. real difference would be with a longer cut like a 3" cut.. thats where I really notice how well one mower cuts from the other.. but i can say on sideways hills my HRX is totally squirly it doesnt want to stay straight for nothin.

@@GwinnettLawns I have one as a backup to my Honda HRC for my lawn cutting job. Excellent mulcher and more powerful than the HRC. They're good little mowers.

@@jeffw.6777 way too heavy, didn't have the built-in mulch plug like the HRX217 and the newest model of the hrx is 200cc and never bogs down. The HRC would bog down in spring growth all the time
@@creatingmind4910 The way the grass has been growing in my town in Ontario, Canada, I can attest to that. been using my GCV190 (10 year old HRX217HYC) for most of the cutting thus far. That being said, as the rain tapers off and growth has been slowing down, I am starting to use my HRC a bit more.
The new Honda hrx217hya has disappointed me from my old trusty hrr216. It won’t start first pull. Takes 2-3 pulls due to the thermowax auto choke system, the overhead valve leaks and the mower seems slow. This is compared to my Honda hrr216 10 year old mower.

I have my speed almost all the way down it pops a wheelie on me. Bought it last year they made em. It takes 4 to 5 pulls sometimes to start, though!pisses me off every time but other than that and a squeak where the handle folds at when storing it mows great
Half way I'm fast walking and all the way up is only like .5 mph faster than half but yea I'll keep her down low in speed

I had a Honda hrc’s for years. They were great mowers. I replaced them with a scag 21s. Easily the best push mower I’ve ever used.
I have a Honda commercial and a Honda HRX, same one used in this video. The HRX is quieter than the HRC and has a bit more power to it. That being said, I wouldn't mind having the Scag SFC-21 especially with the Kohler Command Pro engines (they have a Honda GXV160 model as well, but for the price I wouldn't mind having the Command Pro over the Honda as I like Kohler engines as well having 25+ year old 12.5 hp Kohler Command Pros on two of my Cub Cadet garden tractors and a 23.5 hp on my Walker). The Kohler Pros these days are more or less Honda GX clones anyway.
Run a commercial Honda model with a hydrostatic drive and then see ?
I owned an HRC 216 and sold it....did not like it as the handle was way to low for me and made it difficult to manuver.
@@GwinnettLawns I know with the handles on these machines the way they're braced it makes it a pain in the butt but there must be a height adjustment to it?
