    I have owned a Honda push mower for 10 years and I mow 1/4 acre and it has never failed me. I did have to have carb cleaned this year, first time in 10 years. I shut off fuel after using and let the engine run until it dies. Use premium fuel with additive to prevent sediments from forming.

    I'm just annoyed Honda is taking their sweet time announcing what specific mowers are affected. My new HRN & HRX are still working fine, but who knows if they'll have this issue.

    • @billcoomber4642

      The number of units affected is huge and occurs in both engines used on new mowers. Honda does not have a serial number break as they are all over the map at this point, they still don't know the scope. Injury liability is why they issued the stop sale.

    Just picked up a 2020 HRX 217 today for $200. Looks practically new, I wonder if the guy ever even used it. Pulls fine, no signs of any issues. Couldn't beat the price so it was worth the risk to me.

    Bought a new 217HRX in May 2023. Cut a 20x40ft piece of lawn and it broke. Take it back to dealer and they assembled a new 217HRX and been using it since May. Early August 2023 the second broke. Now we wait for direction. Not pleased to say the least.

    I used to buy Honda mowers and flip them for a profit, as there is always some guy who is willing to drive 30 miles and pay asking price, so as an investment they take the cake. From my experience with small engines, Japan rarely had serious manufacturing defects until now. You could see, however, that the time was near for this kind of thing to happen (as the seals issue first appeared) probably because there's too many language barriers in the production process due to manufacture and assembly often being outside Japan (meaning not only can a small detail or part be left out or put in wrong, but materials science is now affected).

    The new 200cc is NOT an overhead camshaft like your 190cc. From what I have read the entire 200cc engine must be disassembled to get to the cam, unlike your 190cc. On top of that the entire mower must be disassembled before the engine can be removed for disassembly

    • @rghong

      It’s not an overhead camshaft. You have to disassemble the entire engine.

    • @billcoomber4642

      I've done a number of these repairs, it does not require complete disassembly of the mower. I typically require about 1.25 hours to complete the job. This engine series is actually well engineered for service as opposed to replacing a bent crank in Honda's older engines, imo.

      @@billcoomber4642 Re: "This engine series is actually well designed", and "I've done a number of these repairs..."
      This engine has only been on the market for 4yrs. If you say you have done a number of these repairs, and go on to rave about how great of an engine is, my bull$hit meter pegs into the red zone. If it was well engineered you would not have had to do a number of these repairs on engines less than 4yrs old. Tell me how the older Honda engines were having bent cranks without operator error.
      This is coming from a loyal Honda fan that has been driving Hondas for 27yrs, and 23yrs ago my Accord saved my life when an elderly Woman fell asleep behind the wheel and rear ended me. I am not a Honda hater, but I have got to call Bull$hit on your statement

    I agree with you that the Honda mower design and how it cuts is superb overall to cheaper brands. My use is residential, so I don't have the concerns of someone earning a living with equipment. But that said, at that price I don't want a mower with a "personality" I have to adjust to. I've repaired small engines myself for over 50 years. I'd like to see a cam part that creates this issue. Maybe there is a simple "update" to make it work properly - because it seems parts are not out there yet for this problem. I suspect the centrifugal arm that controls the valve trim is not returning to the at rest position. I bought an HRX217 back in March from Home Depot and didn't start using it until late April. My HRX217 had about 4 hours on it before I got the compression lock issue. So after getting this, I remember to be careful on starts so I don't pull my shoulder out. And yes, it is under warranty, but there is only one nearby Honda dealer and they are busy!

    • @GwinnettLawns
      @GwinnettLawns  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Apparently the supplier of the cam after they molded, the part didn’t let the plastic cool completely before read assembling the arm. I guess that causes the arm to malfunction probably as you stated, it’s only certain certain number mowers that are affected as well.

      Nope, the cam will not wear itself into working with use. It's one molded piece including the lobes, so it's designed not to wear out quickly. There is no quick fix.

      As soon as you start buying commercial material for the cheap and the like, there are always moments like this.
      As a 41 year old I literally grew up with an HR216, my parents had a large garden. I now live in that house….
      As indicated, an HRH or an HRC is for the enthusiast who likes to spend a little more or have a budget. You will also get a pro series instead and there will be few problems. Maintenance is always there. The Honda GXV160 rarely fails.
      As a worthy alternative, choose a Stihl RM series. They also have a better collection of grass than Honda, the build quality is very solid.
      Just stay away from that cheap junk! That is my advice, buy something decent and enjoy it for a long time.
      In addition, I have a Honda riding mower, a 2417, which is no longer made in Japan, but in France, by Castel Garden. France is simply not known for quality.... .
      The older riding mowers were made in Japan.
      Also for the inner workings of the engine, and we're not going to complain about money here, 10w30 ZROD or Small Engine Oil, or possibly the XL Boosted is the absolute only thing I can recommend as a lubricant. No Walli or other means chosen for budgetary reasons.
      Finally, mass production, as in the case above, is linked to cheap materials. And so… savings.
      Grtz.

    It’s a lot like the issue Ford is having with their 2.7 ecoboost V6 engines being sold in the Bronco. Apparently a batch of valves weren’t heat treated properly and they would break off the stems in the engine and completely grenade the block. So it depends how many camshafts were in that bad batch to determine how many mowers will be affected by it.

    Sir. You are saying it is a simple fix. What is that fix?

  • @MSKhan-dh9id
    @MSKhan-dh9id ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well I did my research and no where I read that there is an issue with the new Mowers. Of course I purchased it in May of this year. I did about 3 hours total of mowing Since May (I have a riding lawn mower and I only use this for one smaller area) and ran into starting Issue. Took it in and they said yes, it is a Camshaft issue and we will fix it. Two weeks later, I got a call that it is fixed. It ran about 40 minutes and then died and does not start. So i want to take it back to the dealer trying to return it if that is possible or trade it in with Toro 30 inch. I paid over $1000 for this mower and so far it is just junk. Not sure if they will take it back. So I am not sure i can trust Honda mowers anymore. Any other brand that is any good?

  • @Mike-tg8si
    @Mike-tg8si ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For those with issues: do you run your mower out of fuel when you stop it?
    I got an HYA model shipped to me literally the day before the stop sale, and Knock wood thus far after 4 hours (run 25-30 minutes each time so about 8 weeks of use), I haven’t had any issues
    My MO is to shut off the fuel valve to run it out of gas after each use. I also collapse the handlebars (along with the pull rope) each time for storage. Wondering if that’s maybe a workaround (maybe cause of the way it idles out after losing gas) or just luck / happenstance.

    • @GwinnettLawns
      @GwinnettLawns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What you’re doing has nothing to do with the issue. Unless you’re putting in Storage there is no reason to run it out of fuel each time you use it.

    • @Mike-tg8si
      @Mike-tg8si ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@GwinnettLawns thanks. Guess I’ll assume mine will get the issue then unless I’m lucky and won the mower lottery lol.
      Agree probably not needed to use fuel cut off/run out of gas each time, but ever since ethanol fuel was introduced I have used that method for all my OPE to help prevent any potential fuel issues. So it’s just part of my routine to shut the valve and let it idle out while I’m finishing up/cleaning up.
      (I should specify usage: weekly home owner use for only 8 months of year, stored 3-4 months, Mid Atlantic area so humidity year round)

      We, like most dealers are hoarding cams we have in stock. We are using them to repair customer units. Due to the scope of the problem, cams for both engines are probably backordered. I would imagine the cam manufacturer is working overtime to deliver inventory but it will take awhile as dealers will be repairing units already sold and new inventory before selling cams over the counter. Also, this is a warranty issue so it won't cost you anything to have it repaired at a certified Honda dealer.
