Thank you so much for the video. Your videos are so well done, the editing is fantastic. The details of your fly rig is such a great learning experience for me, as I also fly fish in southern Florida. Keep up the great content!
🌴 Hey Chris , I just watched this vid ,it’s right up my alley I’m one of those fanatic fly guys ( 😔I’m addicted ) working the mangroves and skinny water , I think that not only is it tying your own flies , leaders , some guys build their own rods , but being by the mangroves adds the nature aspect, the birds, site fishing , and it’s got its bad points to but it’s not just fly fishing you could be spinning in the area when all of a sudden the tree monster grabs your line and of corse favorite lure or fly , there like the living trees from lord of the rings , but just being out there your one on one trying to deceive fish with a bunch of hair and feathers tied to a hook with thread it’s amazing, as far as for the leaders it all depends on what your going for if it’s mostly snook and these are just my thoughts as I think like anything over built could scare or turn away fish but a 30# but section to a 20# mid to a 15# floracarbon tippet , if your going for monster grade fish , 60# -40# -30# - 20 to 25 , but there again your going to be going to a heavier rod and reel , So one of my questions I’ve always asked from people especially line manufacturers is do bright colored fly lines spook fish ? As from spin fishing or casting the regular was colored monofilaments that would disappear in the water like liquid camo , so why wouldn’t fly lines 🤔🫲🏼😳🫱🏼 one manufacture told me the bright lines were for the fisherman to see we’re the fish was going after it was hooked , another said wit 8-19 ft of leader it didn’t matter what color , others said they make then different colors so fisherman knew what weight line they had on different spools , but I’d kinda like it if they made some that were tea stained or darker green ,more backcountry water colors , I think it’s fun experimenting with different fly patterns or being creative , one of my favorite bait fish fly patterns is called the Thunder struck minnow, it was developed by a friend of mine his name is Cliff Nigh , head first fishing channel did a fly tying vid check it out if you get time , you can Ty them in sizes from glass minnows , pilchards , threadfin, I hope you do more fly fishing vids you do such a great job really like drone, slow mo , and the added nature shots makes things interesting, maybe some vids showing some fly patterns 🤔 at the bench , what was your largest tarpon caught ? On a fly rod ?
Love the fly content, you may want to try a two handed strip for some of those tarpon down there. It gives the baitfish pattern a constant swimming motion like real bait fish do. Which is why it hit your fly as you where dragging it. I am no expert by any means and have no idea what I'm talking about. Just offering what I have seen work on juvi tarpon. Tight lines bro, look forward to more fly content.
That comment made me laugh. Same brother, same😂😂. That does make a lot of sense though. I see people do it for big ones. I thought it was for more hookset power or something. Maybe im just dumb haha
Similar to another comment, for my leader i go 40lb, 30lb, 20lb, and 30 or 40lb bite guard to that. I step down to a 12lb class if I'm fishing in shallow reefs in case I get caught, trying to break a 20lb class off is much harder than you'd expect! Looks like what you are using is working but if you feel like experimenting.
great vid and nice fish!! on your liter don't know about that 12 lb piece on a 8 wt I'll brake it everytime mite try 60 , 40 ,20 ,40 I use 40 , 30 ,20 ,30 works great for everything!! but still great job watch all your vids. Estero Bay was my back yard now up in Charlotte Harbor. You never know when that 40" Snook is going to eat so Go 20 !! lol
I see what your saying. But I've heard many things that 12 pound tippet on a fly rod can handle much more than you'd expect. Many people fish 12-pound tippet for 100+ pound tarpon since that can be "class" weight.
@@christian_masterson the 12lb class tippet record is 194lbs 8oz tarpon believe it is, held by the great Tom Evans, caught in Homassassa FL. For years and years only 12lb class was allowed in the tarpon tournaments in the keys. Then got moved to 16lb class. Massive fish have been caught on 12, but you're gonna lose a lot of them breaking them off till you learn the feel to pull 10lb to 11lbs. You can actually help train yourself to pull 10lbs with a boga grip or a 10lb weight and a pulley tied to the end of your line.
@@rickeeporter5952 ive listened to numerous mill house podcasts about those legends. Andy Mill always tells a story about how if you pull 16 pound, it is impossible to break with a fly rod. Interesting stuff
Oh and as far as leader, I go 40lb to 15 to 20lb class tippet then 25lb to 40lb for bite tippet. All depending on water clarity fish spookiness and so on. I never go smaller than 15-16lb class tippet. I'm not record fishing so I don't see the point.
@@christian_masterson That's nutty brother!! Are you self taught? Only 2.5k is criminal for this quality, but with this quality it's only a short matter of time... Fr though, I help others automate the backend of their business for a living and thus work with LOTS of other social media creators/brand builders, and man you put them and me to shame... You're ever out in the central florida area (orlando, or merritt island), give me a shout man we can hit some killer spots 🎣🤙
@@TheBoundlessNexus thanks man that means a lot. Self taught learning as I go on man. Gonna keep grinding and hopefully turn this into a reality🤙. I will definitely hit you up if I’m around there. God bless
It definitely seems like fly rod is more effective around the mangroves around swfl. Have always wondered if it’s the subtle splash, the way it suspends or what. But maybe it’s just a different profile than the same old DOA, paddletail, or NLBN everybody seems to use. Either way I’ve pretty much gone to fly exclusively the last few years. Keep it up. Love the fly content.
While I appreciate seeing the art of fly fishing, I’ve realized there’s a certain mindset necessary to actually do it. I’ve tried it, and discovered I absolutely do NOT have the mindset for it. I hate fly fishing. Can’t stand doing it myself so I’ll just watch
@@teddytheodoris6778 I don’t know what mindset you need to have. I just know that I don’t have it. I hate everything about fly fishing. I hate putting a fly rod together and getting all the pieces lines up properly, I’d rather just have a one piece spinning rod. I hate having to assemble the rod and run the line through all the guides every time I want to go and use it. I prefer my spinning rods that I can just grab and go. I hate how long and whippy fly rods feel. I know I know, they’re supposed to feel like that but I just don’t like it. I hate dealing with all the knots required to make proper fly leaders. I have ZERO desire to tie my own flies. I hate fly casting, I’d rather just cast a good spinning rod rather than whip a fly rod back and forth and only get a 20ft cast if I’m lucky. I hate how the line gets hung up on EVERYTHING. I hate retrieving the fly by hand stripping. I hate trying to strip set the hook on a fish. I hate fighting a fish on a fly rod and reel. I hate trying to land a fish caught on fly rod/reel. Did I miss anything? I enjoy WATCHING someone who knows what they’re doing fly fish.
@@christian_masterson I have good news and bad news. The good news: this video and your response to my comment inspired me to get my fly rods and gear out and go wading an area full of juvi Tarpon and Snook and try fly fishing again. The bad news: Nope! Still hate it! Couldn’t cast worth a d@&), leader and line got tangled on absolutely everything, and felt like my entire arm, shoulder, and wrist got arthritis just from 20 minutes trying to cast. Walked back to the truck, got a spinning setup, and caught a Snook, Trout, and jumped a Tarpon. I’ll be posting all my fly gear for sale shortly
Fly fishermen should never consider comparing fly system with conventional fishing they both totally different games , it’s like soccer and basketball two different games using the same round ball.🤔
Editing is incredible, it just gets better every video

I tie 6 feet regular 40 mono, then 2 feet 20 lb tippet, to 30/40 floro at 12 inches inside the knot for an IFGA legal leader
