How Posting Too Many Videos RUINED My Channel In YouTube's Algorithm

  • Yes, I see the Irony, but I don't want to completely destroy everything and let the channel die.
    It's unfortunate that it has to come to this. Unless TH-cam changes how they promote videos, it's for the best...

    The top piece of advice I give to the 75,000 creators I work with on NewTubers is to _respect the audience's time._ I just did a bit of mental math, and conservatively, you've uploaded 270 minutes of video in the past ~28 days across 35 videos, nearly 10 minutes per day of video and more than one video a day. We're in a world where many people don't have much time to watch an hour of their favorite _show_ per week, let alone a single TH-cam creator! That's especially true when it's a smaller creator that they haven't learned to trust and respect just yet. You're not overkilling it too badly of course, I've seen channels smaller than ours that upload 270 minutes a *week* and expect the audience to tune in, and expect consistent growth! Either way, multiple videos a day is going to turn the Notification Squad off, which hurts your first hour performance, and your second video in a day sucks the wind out of the previous video's first 24/48 hour performance, which is the main reason TH-cam's algorithms would sour on you. If a channel I look at doesn't have consistent branding, or it has overbearing upload frequency, I don't sub unless it's a friend for whom i'll make an exception.
    Everybody gets obsessed with the daily content push because frequency is mistakenly overhyped as the big must-have, but really it's _consistency_ that gets us growing channels to the next level above all else. If you upload at 2PM every X (day, Thursday every week, etc.), your subs will come more consistently, and that more immediate traction and response is what's going to get the algorithm to bump you. As you touched on a bit, if you're not engaging your dedicated subscribers enough (9 of those 35 videos hit a healthy 10% sub-to-view ratio), frequency doesn't matter. That's not an algorithm thing, that's a creator thing, I'd say - we all think we have to follow what the larger creators denote as "best practices," but their world is totally different from ours, and it always has been from small to large creators. In short, carve a path, my friend, you don't have to follow one!

Also I I think you're a lot more open and real about problems that we all struggle with with the algorithm on TH-cam and you do have a lot of good information but it's a bummer when you put a lot of heart and passion and time into a video and then somebody else uses that footage on their bigger Channel and reaps all the rewards and benefits but I understand you got to love the grind in the hustle much respect peace.

    I'm not able to keep up with any channel that's posts multiple videos daily, or even daily, with the amount of people I follow. I also tend to shy away from bleeding edge news/rumors/rant stuff too. I'm on odd one out, seems most people eat up drama/rumor. Keep doing what your doing, you're obviously doing something right with growth, but I can understand the views versus YT's algorithm is frustrating. Sometimes you just gotta keep at it and one of those videos will kickstart things again. YT is a piece of shit.

    The whole algorithm crap last year discouraged me from doing my youtube thing. I know you have your website and hope you advertise for it more this year on videos as well as on other platforms...I see that it's really important to get viewers to your outside sites pages. Your channel is a favorite of mine and your early vids have a lot of work put into them. Keep em coming JT. It doesn't help that some popular channels have an entire production team and investments that smaller channels don't but they're lacking in actually being as personable upfront as smaller channels. I'm only glad for the decline in your rapper scam videos...wasn't interested in the content to give it a view.

I really enjoy your take on those videos, their really different from the others. I think you will make it after all, Im going to start a youtube channel soon (which I had one in 2006-2011) and hope to connect with you. We all got your back and don't stop believing. Cheers

    I have noticed this as well. Small channels can't get ahead and be sustainable financially in the TH-cam of 2019. It is kind of the social media version of the Pareto Principle. The big guys absorb the majority of the views and just get bigger, while small channels contend for an ever smaller portion of the scraps. The algorithm seems to reinforce this. Strangely, this means that TH-cam, for us, is what it was in the beginning: a platform for self-broadcasting as a hobby.

    This one youtuber is a bit “smaller”, but still has a decent sub count at over 20k. She’s known for reviewing indie makeup brands. She posts every. Single. Day. Sometimes, multiple times in one day. It ALL shows up on my timeline and tbh, it kind of annoys me. It feels spammy. My problem isn’t the fact that I’m not seeing the videos she’s posting, it’s that it’s TOO MUCH CONTENT. Yes. There is a thing as posting so much it ends up affecting the quality of your content. She admitted she posts too many videos and she needs to make less, but better quality videos. She’s not taking her own advice, so I unsubscribed 🤷🏼‍♀️. I’m tired of her taking up my entire newsfeed. Just something else to keep in mind.

    A big Yt creator channel just spoke to TH-cam and the guy was like "let your videos breathe," unless you are a gamer with teens (who have lots of time) or few other verticals, then once a week is great n best. If folks dont have time to watch them it's like why! I've seen that too- went' to 2x week feel burnt out and notice views are not up even though subs are up???

  • @TheLastLineLive
    @TheLastLineLive 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    TH-cam is such a weird platform. It used to be about creative content but now it is about homogeneous content. It rewards channels that are laser focused on one thing and punishes channels that have even a little bit of variety. Well at least until your channel is so big that the algorithm just automatically gives it a boost even if the content doesn't fit a channel's mold. Good example is Cinemassacre, James and Mike built the channel off AVGN them branched off into other avenues successfully once they got big enough. But a small channel do that approach and it's game over for their numbers.

  • @TarksGauntlet
    @TarksGauntlet 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    2 Methods of success.
    1) The gamble.
    Cover topical videos and hope by sheer luck they pop and people stick around.
    2) The long con.
    Make evergreen content. Stuff people will like to learn about or will find entertaining. If possible, make it unicorn content. Things that only you can teach, or provide a perspective that could only come from you.
    The problem with method 1 is that most often when a video pops, it's JUST that video, and not the channel itself. It may bring in some subs, but if the next content isn't sensational than those subs become in-active. If you force the content to seem sensational then those subs leave. It's a very fickle audience.
    The problem with method 2 is that you have to be patient. VERY patient. In rare cases people explode right off the bat, but this is very rare. But not only do you have to be patient and unique, you have to be charismatic and full of unique ideas that you can keep working with. Given how hard it is to have even 1 unique idea, having many is almost unreasonable. It's a far more creative endeavor that requires a much larger input of effort and will take a much longer time to reap any benefits from. When the benefits do start coming however, the audience will likely be less fickle than method 1s and the sub-base a bit more active.
    You're mostly a method 1 kind of guy, chasing a dragon with every upload, but they're videos with short shelf lives right? News cycles are so fast these days. If you need to strip those back, I would. I'd only cover the huge stuff you're passionate about, and use your extra time to produce some content more in line with method 2. They won't get much traction up front, but they'll bring people in consistently over time. If there's video's you've been wanting to make, drop some of the smaller stories everybody else is already covering and make them. Those will be unique to you, and will show people why you're unique and should be subscribed too vs. the other guys.
    As it is right now, news channels have something like a "collectors curse" effect on people. People see so many video's in their subfeed that once they start missing an upload, they become part of a backlog, and after a while, that backlog just sits on a shelf. The videos become not-worth checking out 3 days after they go up because it's "Old news."
    Everybody needs some content worth clicking on for the rest of time. I think your vids about being a game tester hit the evergreen requirements and will still be clicked on 2 years from now.. So long as you don't bury it so deep within the rest of your content that people can't find it. But soulja boy consoles, atari vcs, things like upcoming nintendo directs, those are dead in a week. Those hide the big things.

      Dude you are more right than anyone could ever know.
      For the longest time, I've been frustrated for you, not growing at the pace I would expect your quality and content to grow at. Niche as it may be, it's so well done that it has the ability to reel in viewers who otherwise normally wouldn't care for it. I'm glad to see you're picking up steam this year... The long game is a lot longer than many realize, but you're doing it right... If there is such thing as... right when it comes to this... As for me.. I'm just gonna keep doing what I love. If it works, great, if it doesn't, hey, at least I still get to talk games with everyone. At the end of the day, that's why I love this platform anyways. Great comment dude. Appreciate you.

  • @TheRetroNobody
    @TheRetroNobody 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you think you know the thing you can improve is, definitely chase it and do it.
    Learn from my mistakes. I tried posting often, I tried posting slowly but consistent. No difference. Very little growth. I been trying to figure out what's wrong or what I'm missing for a couple of years now. Everyone tells me shits great, I do good work, etc. I've given people advice and help, editing, setups, lighting, they become successful. I'm still here.
    It's been rougher lately, I don't even get interaction anymore. That's the biggest downer.
    The way the mysterious algorithm is, I'd be better off just starting over to get out of whatever blackhole TH-cam shoved my channel in.

    As a small channel myself, I can definitely agree with this. My biggest problem has been consistency, always hase been from the start. I tend to just make a video when I have the chance to. It also takes me awhile to do so cause I'm somewhat of a perfectionist lol.
    Most importantly is that I never want to loose that fun aspect of making a video. It is a lot of work for sure, especially when you have to take about 80 re-takes to get a certain part just right because you slured or had a brain fart in the middle of your speech. That happens to me quite a bit actually lol. In the end however, I enjoy doing it and knowing that someone will enjoy the video, even if it's just a small handful of folks, is enough to keep me going.
    I got extremely lucky with that Metroidvania video I did a year ago. I netted a lot of great folks from that video including yourself. I've got the chance to meet some incredible people here within the gaming community and for that I am truly grateful 🙂. It's a strong enough incentive to keep me going forward anyway, even if my videos may not be as frequent lol. I'm just glad I can entertain a few people here and there. Maybe eventually I'll be able to pump out a video once a week at the very least but for now, I'll do them when I can.

    I think all channels are dying to some degree, it's never constant exponential growth. I would definitely pull back the reigns on current event stuff. I think your Mother 3 video was the most memorable video you have made in recent memory. Keep diversifying and reaching out to different gaming audiences. Maybe there is a game series you always wanted to explore that doesn't get enough attention, look at something like that. There certainly is no magic bullet. Talking about a major news topic once a week is God's plenty. Stay frosty!

      Thanks so much for the thoughts, PK. It means a lot. I enjoyed the EB video and making it was fun, but it's one of those that I make when I feel like it. If I made those often I wouldn't be having as much fun and quickly burn myself out. Especially when there's no guarantee of an audience.

      @@SmashJT That's just the thing, there is never a guarantee that your audience will always watch your videos. From my perspective, when it comes to getting youtube views it is all about taking big risks in the hopes of getting big rewards. There is no risk in news stories, other than annoying people who don't like news stories. I guess from my perspective I would rather make one high quality, brilliantly thought out, eloquently spoken, and well-crafted video that I'm deeply proud of that gets 200 views today, and maybe trickles in views later, than make some news story that gets 200 views in a week that no one ever looks at again. I know why people make the news stories, I get it, it attracts a lot of people. But the thing about news, most of the time it's cheap and it never holds up and hardly stands the tests of time. If you genuinely believe your channel is dead, you have absolutely nothing to worry about and might as well make videos you wanna make anyways. I don't think it's dead at all though.FFS , you have 8 bit Eric and Happy Console Gamer commenting on your video. Some of us out here would give anything to get acknowledgment from those cats. Like someone else in the comment section said promote it on other platforms. Also, I don't know if you have considered this for some of your old vids but update some of the thumbnails, and then promote those older videos on twitter or wherever. I remember I watched that, I think it was the Track and Feild video you made a while back, I thought that was a fun video.

    TH-cam is a strange duck. I only have like 1k+ subs but I still have fun doing vids regardless of sub count and my subs have been more engaging so I'm happier than I was about the whole YT algorithm thing. Yeah, I'm prolly still getting f**ked by the system and my shit is likely getting buried in the netherspace but I'm having more fun doing it now. I could see it getting frustrating though if you're trying to make YT your main gig. Maybe its time to change up what you do on YT and leave the low-hanging fruit videos to other youtubers to fight over? :P Maybe a YT tips channel! You had lots of constructive input that I put to use in my videos that's helped me out!

    Hi, great informative video. I get a little sick of seeing too many uploads. I don't care about them. I like when channels upload only once in a while. I don't like gossip or rants, I just like great content. There's too much crap on youtube.

    I can't say I really understand all this algorithm biz (besides its being programmed to screw people over), but I do say this gives you a unique opportunity to focus more on SmashJT.com, and the SmashJT Patreon. I know that's perhaps not as exciting an alternative, but if TH-cam is designed towards growing bigger, "flashier" channels, at the very least you have a subscriber base outside the platform to fall back on. It might not be vids, but you can post updates and latest news reports through your blog, and focus on more "exclusive" content for your Patreon subscribers. That may sound a bit self-serving, as I AM a Patreon subscriber, but at least it gives you options for putting your thoughts/voice out there for people to hear. After all, the "serious" folks will follow you for YOU, regardless of the medium used.

    My question for you is what do you want to achieve from this channel? Do you want to build a strong community with other members or are you looking to make it big? I am not the biggest fan of frequent video posts. It's too much for viewers to take in and view counts will suffer. Also, you could put too much pressure on yourself to release videos frequently and the result is a decline in quality of your content. I can appreciate a video that requires a lot of time and effort put in. I have seen channels with large subscriber counts that take this approach. It's up to you what you want to do, but I say treat this like a hobby.

    I don't rely on TH-cam to promote my videos. I hardly get any views from TH-cam. My views come from me hustling and promoting my videos on social media.Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit. I have a way bigger following on those platforms so that's where my views come from. Its not that you post too much. Maybe you gotta put more time into hustling again instead of praying to the algorithm to promote you

    im highly likely in this same boat, but you gotta remember our core audience is perhaps the most fickle people that watch and read entertainment. not to insult them, but they are also very wishy washy and sometimes not aware of how a site like youtube might work. to be fair, lots of people arent. they dont realize that just missing ONE video has the potential to affect a channel. We are all at the mercy of a robot, while at the same time our audiences. The robot will judge us based solely on who DOESNT watch our videos as opposed to who does. TH-cam gives a fuck less about who supports us.

    • @SmashJT
      @SmashJT  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for coming by Eric. I saw you post on Twitter about this the other day and it was already eating away at me. I had to get it off my chest and make the video. My channel is on a slight downswing but it’s like the stock market. Can’t play it day to day, it’s a long term investment.
      The audience is finicky for sure but I can’t hold anyone more accountable than myself and even I can’t watch everything from everyone so I get it. The algorithm screws you.

  • @ryanbomzer
    @ryanbomzer ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey buddy I can see the problem straight away, you have been very successful with TH-cam and have had videos get lots of views (200k) but the problem is that the algorithm has given you power to rank for that, if you make more videos like your top viewed ones, your growth will start becoming ridiculously high, I have just started implementing this on my other TH-cam channel @carvedculture - stay blessed, good luck!

    • @satshortcuts
      @satshortcuts ปีที่แล้ว

      So are you saying to make videos that people want to watch?

    • @ryanbomzer
      @ryanbomzer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@satshortcuts - At the beginning of your TH-cam channel journey - you should make different types of videos, once you have a few that do really well, make more videos like your most popular ones and the ones that are not popular stop making those. You can even break it down, for example, on your channel I can see that your most popular video has 3,500 views, its duration is 1 minute 45, the thumbnail is the best out of your other videos and the title asks a question.
      If you made other videos asking a question and help people with maths (Easy and difficult) you could reach a large audience, but the title and thumbnail are the most important and I dont think hashtags are very popular on TH-cam titles at the moment. I would highly recommend watching a few of my videos as I teach people how to be successful on TH-cam and in business.
