    Hey Mark, did you know a 'hardwood' tree differs from a 'softwood' tree not iin the hardness of it's wood but the structure of the tree itself. Hardwoods shed their leaves in Winter while softwoods are evergreen like pines. Balsa, the wood that is often used to build model aeroplanes is extremely light and soft but is actually a hardwood species.

    The tillers need to be at an angle to the rudders so that the connecting bar is shorter than the distance between the rudder pivots. When turning the hulls trace circles of different radii. Read up on Ackermann steering. Otherwise the boat will not turn well.

    Washing up liquid your broom and some water that sail will clean up good. I'm sure you have ideas on how to secure your deck around your mast step some rope shrouds job done. The gaff should tie or clip around the lower mast. For your solar I would rig it to a net that you can attach securely to the aft beams.

    Thanks for another real video. i love your "bare bones" simple way of doing things. I like your way of doing things. Many of the refit vids are in a nice yard, or in a warm building, with $100k worth of tools in the shop.
    I like it when you pull out a bolt and say " Well, its not the greatest, but I'll clean it up and it will be fine".

    Great Progress there.... Looking a Lot More of a BOAT Now ...... :-) :-) :-) A bit of a Heads-Up .... I see that you replaced the 'Screwdriver' as a Pivot ..... Please remember that it is NEVER a Good Idea to use the 'Thread' of a Bolt or Screw as the Pivot. Best to have a SOLID or Pipe/Tube, Treaded on either end, held in place with Nyloc Nuts and Washers or a Splitpins. Other option is a Bolt with a 'Blank' section, long enough for the Pivot, Nyloc Nut and Washers .... Best to You, Thanks for your Very Entertaining vidclip .... Love the enthusiasm .... Cheers from ChCh, NZ

    Hi Mark, I appreciate that most of this is temporary work (Maybe you could keep a list of what you need to revisit, lest its forgotten) but could you pay attention to the accurate specification of the Bolted and Pinned steel joints. It looks like there is design for movement but not flex caused by sloppy fits. Could I suggest that you measure accurately and specify high tensile steel materials. Your pins for example will need to be machined with a cap at one end and correct size (max fit) split pin in the same material on the other end (or maybe a Nyloc Nut). Use washers, either side of the joint, yes even next to a split pin. Consider a modification to introduce a grease nipple to the hinge. (Your Dad should be able to help you with this). Threads are weak points in fixings, the cross section area at the base of the thread is a shear point. Given your future desire to go international with this boat I cant stress enough how important it is to carry multiple spares particularly give that these are bespoke stressed items, not normally available in remote islands,
    I enjoy your exploration into your skill base, just be careful.

    Mark, the semi circular hole would be better to cut by joining two pieces of wood and clamp them together and use your hole saw. Half way then from the opposite side to complete the hole. Perfect semi circle. A grinder can cut down the saw ninja blade so you can re-attach the handle. André in Sydney

  • @mckenziekeith7434
    @mckenziekeith7434 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think we totally get what you are doing. You are trying to jury rig everything so you can get the boat to a better place. This is a time honored tradition. Of course it is all sketchy as frig. But you have to strike a balance between fixing up what you can now to the standard you can manage, vs doing everything properly later. At least you have two motors and two rudders! So if you can make sure the hulls don't fill up with water in transit you have a pretty good chance of making it somewhere better. Just try your best not to compromise on waiting for a good weather window.

I would add Nylon washer between metal plates and OBLIGATORY I would use LockNut - self locking nut with nylon insert - to screw all together not relally tight to assure a space for work of both plates byt at the same time assuring it will never self-usnscrew. Standard nut will relly fast got released due to vibration and permanent rotations.

    Great video as usual. The project is becoming good content in my opinion.
    The reason why you can't get the A frame up with the block and tackle, is that it's still a DEAD LIFT. Schooch out on the front beam again with a tall cardboard box (taped up closed for best stability... lift the A frame like you did before and prop it up under the cardboard box. Now go use your block and tackle and it will be easier because the lidt is already started.

    • @danieldonaldson8634
      @danieldonaldson8634 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      probably better to go get the jack from the car, lift it to the point where it starts to give a better mechanical advantage. The initial arrangement is not a dead lift, the vector of the force is completely misaligned with the direction of desired movement, which massively increases the force needed: as the two reach perfectly aligned, the amount of force reaches infinity....

    25:03 have a bit if a google for a 'jury mast knot' (or jury masthead knot). Very (fairly?) simple knot especially suited for helping to rig up tempory masts. It sits at the top of the mast and has two lengths to rig to the boat and a few loops to allow for more lines to steady the mast. (Might need to set a pin of some sort at the mast tip).

    Good progress Mark, all those little jobs add up to a lot and great progress towards moving day. You absolutely could raise the mast on the mooring using a tabernacle and A frame. You would need shrouds and to fit the chain plates but the boat would be ideal for dyneema rigging. It would be a whole load easier with a couple of helpers mind you and a better block and tackle with jammers. You would need to make a good mast step if the rig isn’t supposed to have a tabernacle but all doable with the right planning. Good luck with the engine. Andy UK

    The sail is not dirty, it has a natural leave print on it 😅

    I had to jury rig my mizzenmast mast on the second beam from the bow and it worked fine to get from a to b until I got to a place to re rig my 46 ft Oro. I sailed it in over forty knots at times and it held up fine. You can also set up a remote tiller to the central platform with a few screws pulleys and rope. Pick your weather and fixed engines you will get home. They are four wheel drives of the sea.

    Any chance Mark that you could supply a description, or an artist's impression, of exactly where things are headed and what the boat will look like when absolutely everything is done? Aside from individual jobs, I don't really have any idea of what your end vision is. Thanks.

    It would be good if the mast was possible to raise without outside assistance anyway so in the long run I would look at that.

    Always fun watching your adventures Mark. Don't mess around with jury rigged nonsense, repurpose that dinghy rig for something else if the wood is good, and put your energy where it matters: Water proofing the boat and getting your engines sorted. If you're genuinely worried about a secondary means of propulsion, reach out to electric outboard motor manufacturers and see if they'll sponsor you to test their products. You've got plenty of battery power now to run an electric outboard!

    Looking good there and I am happy to see you having fun again! Love the Zombie sail - it will look epic when you sail past all the posh geezas on their million euro bought boats at the Yacht Club!
    Please, do two things for me!
    1. Clean the camera lens so I can stop wiping my screen! 🙂
    2. Treat the wood on your decks as it will rot in no time in the Netherlands with the rain!
    Good luck, enjoy!

    Hey the A Frame on the boat you build the platform on is for raising and lowering the mast. I can tell you how to do it if you want. Its an everyday thing for the dutchies to get under bridges.

    Good work Mark. Keep on going! I do worry about your 90 days in 180 days in Holland - unless you have an EU passport?

    Of course you can put the mast up, easy job! Just remember to make a wire or rope bridle each side, the top of which when lifted in line with the mast is the same height as the pivot pin in the tabernacle, that way you can attach side stays which will stay the mast throughout the lift.

    Keep an eye open for used windsurfer masts near those bins. Lightweight tiller connector bar, sprit, boom etc etc
