Resin Tip of the Day - Cells and Lacing

  • In this video, I want to share my tips for creating lacing and cells in your ocean pieces.
One of the most frequently asked questions, I get asked is, how do I achieve cells and lacing in my ocean art?
One of the first things you need to consider is the brand of resin you are using. Not all resins are created equally, and as such, they will all perform differently. I recommend looking for a medium consistency resin, not too runny and not too thick. Finding the right resin will mean a bit of research.
I first used the Standard UV Resin from U Resin. I wasn't able to achieve any cells or lacing with this resin, however, once I switched to their liquid glass, amazing things started to happen, and now I use no other brand.
The next factor to take into consideration is the brand of white you are using. Your white pigment or paste needs to be highly pigmented and opaque. A translucent white, will not achieve the right results. I prefer the Le Rez Angel White Pigment Paste, or if you want a powder, the Vivacious Arctic White Powder Pigment. Both are highly pigmented and will achieve a good strong white base to work with.
Next, after I have poured the base colour and let it sit for about an hour, I add a transparent layer of resin. The clear layer gives a good barrier between the lower layer and the white layer.
Next, I let the white resin sit in the cup until it started to warm in the cup. By the time I poured, it was getting quite hot. Once it gets hot, you have to work quickly and pour it on to the board.
The final step is to apply heat to the white resin and move it around. Remember to be careful and not burn your resin.
The products I use to create my resin ocean waves include:

Is it possible to use white acrylic ink for colouring resin? Also I went to use my resin that I hadn't used for 6 months and it was like a Jelly in the bottom of the bottle. Just couldn't get it out of the bottle. I was using a doming resin. Any ideas on what may have happened? Thanks for all your amazing videos and so generous with your information.

You can use white acrylic paint. Make sure you use less than 10% in with your resin. It can affect the curing process. As for your resin, it has a shelf life and it sounds like it has gone off. There is not much you can do about it. 💕

I knew all of this except that my resin could be too thin. It is and it is perfect to coat a painting. Now I am questioning if I put enough of my opaque white in. It was very runny but I live in the tropics and it is Summer. I have to turn off the air conditioner to resin so I really have to want to do it in Summer.
I did my first wave 24 hours ago. I just checked it and the cells are now lines. It isn’t ugly but it isn’t what I wanted either. Thank you for this, it helped a lot. Now I know it isn’t just me. ❤️

Please tell which top coat should be applied on the epoxy top to make it scratch free.

In my experience, there is no scratch resistant resin. When I sell my tables, I include care instructions to help prolong the life of their table. 💕 I don't do top coats, unless it is necessary.

I've been using acrylic paint, but I'm struggling with lacing and making the waves look more realistic. The paint just seems to separate from the resin even after mixing well. What is the best white to use? And what colour/type of paints would you recommend?

I prefer to use Le Rez Angel White for lacing. I have listed the products used in the description below the video. 💕
