Envy is the adversary of 'charity' and 'mercy'. Envy is the evil eye. It is sadness at another's good fortune. Its joy is in what others can lose. Gratitude is the antidote of envy.

Fr chris, when i had a very painful knee injury back in march i never would have thought it would lead to me discovering the Divine Mercy shrine. Having so much time off sick i watched lots of your talks and masses and fell in love with Jesus and mary again. Becoming a Marian helper has given me a focus in life to spread divine mercy in Birmingham uk. I dont know what the future holds, but i know WHO holds my future. Jesus , I trust in you. Amen

Thank you Fr. Chris for sharing insights on Envy. We don't realise how we are quick to compare ourselves with others and unknowingly we feed the root of jealously. This was a great reminder.

I agree that envy and it’s insidious sequelae, like resentment, hatred, sadness and more run rampant. Unlike pride, envy appears rooted in material THINGS that we don’t have. Heavenly Father, please give me the grace to be grateful for all the blessings in my own life. Please show me how to be generous with all you have given to me.

    • @tanyac.9005

I am loving this series on “The Seven Deadly Sins”! It gives us an excellent opportunity to better recognize and overcome the obstacles that prevent us from living in perfect union with God. Prayers of gratitude have become my favorite type of prayer as well; it gives me no time to be envious. God has given us all different gifts; just because He has given a certain talent to one person it may not necessarily be my gift. We are all puzzle pieces in this box called life. When put together perfectly, we as a society become God’s masterpiece. God bless you, Fr Chris! I’m looking forward to next week’s episode on “Living Divine Mercy”.

I agree this series is so valuable because of the way Father Chris is teaching us the practice of the virtue to counteract the vice. It’s a little embarrassing to say that until recently I never gave the seven deadly sins a thought. Again why I love his lessons, because in keeping with the homily from the other day, we need to name and understand the vice and then “do the opposite.” Thank you Father Chris for this enlightening series. It’s interesting that Grace and gratitude sound like. Thank you Tanya, for clearly echoing the value of the series.

Envy vs gratitude. What I am grateful to God that I was able to have 4 children . I did not have issue with infertility problems as other people do , was able to get pregnant when I was ready to have another child and carry to full term without any complications. I am grateful that all my children were born healthy and are doing were well now. Children are true blessing from God. It was ots of work when they were small but it was worth it. My children are my joy, pride and happiness. Thank you God for that.

My eyes welled up as I listened to Fr. Chase's story. It validated my decision to cancel my final interview, which would have guaranteed me a job and a residence visa. The location is far from the city and is in Abu Dhabi's developing area. The drawback was the absence of a Catholic Church. I have to travel by bus for nearly two hours to church and the same amount of time back. The job pays double my previous salary and includes free housing and flights once a year. The thought of not being able to attend Holy Mass and receive the Holy Eucharist though was an emotional and spiritual burden for me. I can't live joyfully if I can't go to Church on Sunday and worship God. I attend online mass, but receiving physical Holy Communion is a different story. I am a lector at a beautiful Catholic church in Al Ain. Others thought my decision was stupid. However, the Catholic Church is a major factor in relocating. Thank you, Fr. Chris. Fr. Chase's story is inspiring, as is yours. I'm glad to hear your mother is doing well. Please pray for me to find work here in Al Ain so that I can continue to serve God.

This video helped me see what walls I walk into. I think my and others anger over injustice and its reward is confused by others with jealousy. Seeing the wealth of those who look away, who demand while it is not their place, who seek refuge without being haunted, it is hard not to wish for their misfortune. But this comes from suffering from the underlying injustice an undeserved soul profits from. But to an eye who is blind to these injustices it is nothing but jealousy from us sufferers. The jealousy judge does not look to the need of those he does not perceive as suffering as he does not know the injustices they suffer from. But that has no easy explanation anymore after millennia of injustice. Not realizing some are really worse off just prolongs their suffering.

In today’s modern society especially in America. Some people can be envious of others. And let me tell you something, envy is a sin that no sinner wants to discuss. It’s hideous and ugly. And I myself was a victim of envy. Back in my junior high school days. I was a 8th grade student and for the first time I had my first girlfriend. But a friend of mine was very envious of me because he didn’t have a girlfriend. And I told him more than once that she was with me not with him. But he couldn’t accept it. So he tried telling me lies about her. But I didn’t believe him. And as for the relationship between her and I. It didn’t last long at all. And there was another time when I was invited to lunch event for special Olympic athletes like myself. My name was picked out. And when my cousin heard that I was invited and he wasn’t. I had a feeling that he was envious of me. Do I enjoy making him feel envious of me? No. Because it would be wrong of me.

I do feel gratitude to psychologists who helped advance modern education methods. The fathers of psychiatry Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, William James, Ivan Pavlov and Alfred Adler never envied one another. Good thing however those 5 men were willing to compete with one another instead when it comes to coming up with better ways to help people who suffer from physical illness while experiencing moral dillemas. If they didn't compete with one another on being able to come up with the best strategies to help people experiencing moral dillemas; Moral dilemmas like should I stay in school or should I get married young: Then all of them would be continuing to believe that women in general can experience penis envy. Penis envy while so many men from time to time are expected by their own government to fight one another with bigger and bigger weapons. I wonder which of those 5 men and their family members too experienced the most persecution only because of their achievments? I wonder if it was Carl Jung who experienced the most persecution as he became successful. Only because of what is called Swiss banks. While he had 5 children. One who died before he did.
