  • One in four people in the world will be affected by mental illness at some point in their lives. More than 16 million U.S. adults had at least one major depressive episode in the past year.
In 2013, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland offered his empathy and advice to those facing mental illness. Years ago, when his stress was high and his energy was low, Elder Holland says he “took a psychic blow that was as unanticipated as it was real.” He and others have found that spiritual healing and medical healing work together to form the key to lasting happiness.
“We do the best we can and we manage the situation. But when we’ve done all we can do, we endure. Hang in there and count on light at the end of the tunnel,” he says.
Have you or a loved one endured mental illness? How do you maintain faith in God’s love and Elder Holland’s message of hope?

I started cubing to make myself feel better, and ever since I felt the Holy Ghost prompt me to try to solve a rubik's cube, I've felt so much happier. It was a distraction from my thoughts, and when I finally solved it, it felt so good that I could do something. It's about our Heavenly Father knowing and loving each and every one of us and what we need and I love that He sends the Holy Ghost to inspire His chosen servants! He always works through us to uplift and serve those around us! That's what's so awesome about this church! It's truly not ours, it's His, and He will always take care of us!

I am so grateful that Elder Holland felt impressed to share his insights based on his own challenges. Discussion helps in the healing. This has been a recent challenge for me. I hold tight to the concept that God and the Savior love me unconditionally. The Atonement can make us whole again. This I know.

  • @niccalee

I remember being a little child. I remember feeling so small and lost and unwanted. I remember thinking terrible things. But in those moments, I had something to cling to.
"I am a Child of God, and God and Jesus love me. And if they are perfect, and they love me, then that must be right. I am loved."
I can honestly say that if it weren't for the lessons I learned in Church and at home from my parents, I don't think I would be here.
There are still times where I cannot muster love for myself. But in its stead, I can borrow my Heavenly Father's love for me instead. He knows everything, and if he loves me, then it must be right.

you are you, you can decide to be kind to others as you wish them to be kind to you. nobody is perfect, if there was perfection then there would be no problem solving. the best thing is to leave a net positive in the world, anyone who claims to know all the answers has stopped asking questions, and why is it ever bad to ask questions? from a child to discover their own feet to testing the limits of a parent's moratity in teaching us. testing limits is how we find out the boundaries of our world, any "god" that says they have all the answers makes me wonder why they don't want me to ask questions. if the answers are right, why not stand up to questions?

You know, to live like this is a prove that I don't know if I'll be strong enough to overcome. We keep trying in our own way, some depression, others economy and so forth, this is mine and something I'll need to learn before going to our Father's presence.

I still remember the last time I tried to commit suicide. It's like it happened yesterday, yet on that same day I made a choice to never let it happen again. It's been a little over 3 years since I made that choice and Heavenly Father has been with me that whole time, helping me to never fall back down that hole. May he always be with any of you, that you may be happy and not fall down that same hole. If you are down that hole, then may he help you find a way out.

I'm glad you are still alright. I too have a history of self-hurting and suicide, i remember one time i tried to kill myself by hit my head repeatedly into a wall, halfway through, it got so painful that i couldn't feel my head anymore so i lie down. Then i remember about a game i like coming out next month so i thought, maybe wait for a while before killing myself? And that thought has kept me alive through various attempts. My point is that when you think about taking your own life, also think about what you love and what you might miss out should you choose to end it today. Though my depression has not gone and i can't talk with my family about it, i would not try to commit suicide before thinking twice about it. Hope it works for you guys too.
Your life MATTERS, you are MATTERS.

Rob Mullen, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland is my favorite Apostle. I love his talks, his advice. I feel as if he is talking directly to me. I pray for his and his wife's health. I know we all have death waiting for us, but I pray to Our Heavenly Father to spare him, heal his body. I know I'm not the only one who needs his knowledge and spiritual direction. I thank him so much for what he has given me and he doesn't even know. I've never met him in person, but his talks are so on point and full of emotion, I always have tears running down my cheeks when he talks. My fondest wish is to meet him, and tell him how much he means to me, what he gives me in his talks.

This talk came at a pivotal moment in my life. After praying for answers for why I could not be healed from my depression and would I ever be whole in my mind and heart in this life, this talk saved my life that general conference day. Elder Holland told me to time a knot in my rope and hold on. Amazingly, i made it through that moment, and have come out on the other side. After much work and listening to what changes I needed to make through the guidance of the Holy Ghost, I am now completely off of anti depressants for the first time in 20+ years. Heavenly Father is there and will answer our prayers if we are willing to listen and make changes. I testify it works.

I might go so far as to say no weakness is a fault at all! I would say weakness can be the cause of faults. But weakness in and of itself is never a fault. It is something that can even be useful, as Ether so acknowledges. If weaknesses can become strengths, then they are not to be discarded. They are to be transformed instead.

I didn't know how truly hard mental health is until it happened to me. This message always brings me to tears because it reminds me that I experienced both the trial and the promised blessings that continue to this day. Don't give up, hold on with all you have an truly believe it will be better. Even if you make 1% progress to being whole that day, keep going, I know you'll get there and I know because I had to get there and the joy I felt has kept me going ever since.

The white J Cole We are blessed to have both! There is no substitute for spirituality; it's truth. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints teaches of your divine nature and individual worth, (You are NOT your illness!) Gives eternal perspective on your purpose in life,(YOU are needed!) Helps understanding of why everyone has some kind of adversity to overcome, (Opposition makes you stronger and gives you the compassion to help others when you are able.) Teaches you how to pray, receive answers, comfort, & guidance.(You CAN forgive & forget and become clean.) Gives you a local support system (Ward Family) to call on. All of this helps to endure the hard times and get up every time you fall.
Even if you cannot feel the Holy Spirit because of illness or meds,or find the support yet, like they have for diabetes or cancer, you are NOT alone:
I love The Holy Bible KJV (visualize Christ pulling you up out of the sea, into his warm embrace like Peter) and The Book of Mormon.(visualize holding on the iron rod through the mists of darkness. Then take baby steps. And when you're tired, remember there are angels around you to bear you up!
The Dr. experiments to find the right medication at the right dose, sometimes for years and the side effects can actually make things extremely worse, before you get better. You must exercise faith & endurance that YOU WILL GET BETTER. Spirituality can help see you through.
Kindly enlighten me on Psycho/bio treatment. Is that like cognitive or behavior therapy? God bless!

I personally have genetic depression. I've been lucky enough to be able to control it well enough in these recent years with the help of those around me. A friend of mine is now going through a very dark time when before he was a shining light to me. It has been seeming that no matter how hard I try, it seems as though I've lost my friend. I needed peace this morning, and this was the first video I saw. Not everything has been solved obviously, but at least I've been reminded that I shouldn't lose hope. I didn't lose it before, and I most certainly cannot lose it now. I love my Savior, and I am forever grateful for what he has done for not just me, but for all of God's children. I know not everyone will share this same belief, but I would hope that we will all be able to believe in hope itself at the very least. It's worth holding onto.

My sister”in law” sent this to me and I wish everyone in my family would watch it, they wouldn’t, I went years with the meds and no counseling. After I was gathering tools I could use through my counseling and called on God many times a day to help me it was too late. ❤❤
Many in my family see me with a stain on me and I knew what I was doing and did it because that’s who I am and will never change. Even my husband of 35yrs. has left me and has no intention of coming back, he doesn’t trust me. I feel like everyone is just waiting for me to go to mania again. God has been my supporter, I am a. Child of God and He will never abandon me. Thank you for giving me a voice, I am not LDS, but God loves us I know that to be true. God makes the impossible, possible I trust that with all that I am and I do have family support who cares about me and makes my burden less thank you Carol

I'm 63 years old. In 1993 I started having panic and anxiety attacks along with depression. Back then these subjects were taboo and if we did share them with family and friends what we experiencing we were told to pull ourselves up by our boot straps or to shake it off, and my favorite there must be some sin that we haven't repented of. I have discovered that counseling, the right medication and drawing close to the Lord and feasting upon His words have made the road to happiness possible. Elder Holland is a blessing from heaven! His experience, his wise counsel and his love for each us has helped me durning this journey. There is no challenge or sin deep enough where the Lord hasn't already been. He is our Master , our healer and our Savior.

Thank you very much for this wonderful thing. I just feel so lost right now, I don't know what to do anymore with my life. I wasn't even able to attend seminary earlier because I couldn't stop crying. I can't show my parents about this because I'm so scared. I'm scared that these emotions would interfere with my daily life, school, home, and my duties to God. But I know Heavenly Father has a plan for me, for all of us. This is just a trial and I know that I'll be able to surpass it. Thank you very much.

What's even greater is to realize we're not broken in the first place. Pain is real, yes, but brokenness is not. We don't need to find all the broken shards, cutting ourselves on them, trying to glue them back together... instead, we step out of their facade as they disappear to dust, we step out whole as we ever were, into the light.
Professional help may be required, absolutely. There may be real issues, but they are issues, they are what they are, there is no brokenness.

For the past couple of weeks, I've been feeling nervous every morning, over nothing! But everyday, I feel the presence of angels helping me through this, and I know that if I accept and endure my trials well, I'll be very blessed. I'm so grateful for the true gospel in my life!💟💟💟💟
