I am impressed. Most of their cultivation is done with recyclable material except for the plastic bags. Here in Canada the stores keeps the mushrooms in open carton boxes, and when we take the mushroom home, we keep them in a brown paper bag in order to last longer. Plastic bags tends to accumulate humidity and therefore spoiling the mushrooms.
For all those asking, these appear to be Calocybe indica, common name The Milky Mushroom. For people in Europe the sight of a big white mushroom with white gills sets alarm bells ringing because we have a couple of deadly poisonous varieties over here that match that description.
Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else trying to find out how do you grow mushrooms at home try Qwixie Grow Mushroom Helper (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my m8 got great success with it.
The mushrooms look so big! We get mushroom in North America in stryrofoam containers covered with plastic wrap and from farmers' markets in brown paper bags.
Beautiful Mushroom! I grew this about 1 year ago and need to do it again! I had done so on wheat straw treated with hydrated lime, The culture was from aloha medicinals and is the PP102 strain of Calocybe indica. After full colonization, approx. 3 weeks, this was cased with unpasteurized moistened peat moss to a 1/2 inch depth. It was about two more weeks until this was fully colonized. Pinhead formation initiated under hot conditions... originating from riparian habitat in tropical India, this was no surprise. Temp. in fruiting room was 85 degrees F with 99% rH CO2 about 600ppm. Surprisingly slow to develop taking 10 days to finish maturing. Delicious almost sweet corn flavor and firm texture similar to texture of P. eryngii. Curious, what kind of casing was used in this and what was the harvesting strategy, almost seemed like they were thinned... Also, what would the protocol be for subsequent flushes? Perhaps scratching, cooling the grow room then increasing the temp. to shock the mycelium into fruition... Future growth trials just use wood ashes and water to treat straw or perhaps 5 day fermentation in cold water... Also, perhaps a warmer fruiting environment 30-40C? This is a really big mushroom obviously and has a lot of great potential! Thank you for the amazing video!
this is a fantastic presentation, it would have been even more fantastic if it had english subtitles. but thank you, it has been helpful for my coursework
Me to the rescue, Here's a Small Summary :) His name is vijayan pilla. He's ex-military joined at the age of 17, he lives in the district of alappuzha(also called as the venice of the east), kerala,India. After retiring he started some business but failed, then he tried his hand at mushroom cultivation (based on hearsay) and failed initially, but didn't give up. He did a lot of research on it attended some classes on it and then tried again. He also faced multiple failures while trying but solved them all by trial and error. He says you'll fail a lot of times when trying out mushroom cultivation, but you've got to keep at it. He grows two varieties of Oyster mushrooms( during the monsoon season) and paddy straw mushrooms(during the summer season). He says that oyster mushrooms are tastier than Paddy straw mushrooms, but paddy staw mushrooms stay fresh for longer and are more resilient. He starts with 125l of water, next add 7g of bavistin fungicide and 100ml formalin, then soak around 5 -10 kgs of hay in this solution (make sure that the hay is completely submerged) ,the next day take the hay out. (Alternatively you could boil the hay for around 30 mins). Next he packs the damp hay in plastic bags.between the layers along the outer section he adds seeds(grains) coated with fungi (which he bought or produced himself, it is not mentioned clearly). He adds up to 3 layers per packet. He ensures the hay is tightly packed and then seals the top with a rubber band. Puts the date of packing on the cover and also pokes small holes on the sides. He hangs each packet(bed) one above the other using the rope contraption as seen in the video, for maximum space usage. For about 3 weeks he keeps the beds in a dark room. Then on the 3rd week he blends a mixture of soil, sand and cow dung which is disinfected by steaming it for around 2 hrs in a pressure cooker (make sure to remove the weight). Next he opens the bed at the top, compresses it by an inch and lays down the soil mixture on it (about 1 inch thick). Once this is done he moves the packet to a room with sufficient light and airflow (also make sure to water it so as to not let it dry out). A week later small mushrooms start sprouting out. Although there may be many sprouts but only a few make do grow big. 1 week after they sprou he harvests the mushrooms (note: hes speaking about the straw mushroom, it could be the same for the oyster mushroom too). The harvesting technique is basically, grabbing the stem and twisting it.after harvest he removes the scraps on the top soil layer. He keeps watering it till it sprouts again. You can get up to 4 harvests from the same bed. i.e. around 1 kg per bed. Since there's a layer of soil, dung used, you must clean it properly before use. Once the harvest is done he packs it with his family and sells it at the local shops. The shop owner says that there's a ton of demand but low supply for the mushrooms so they sell really well. He adds that they keep for about a week or so (without refrigeration i think, its not shown exactly). He sells it at the rate of 100rupees per kg (good luck getting it at that rate today :). Vijayan pilla says that the discipline brought by 18 years of army life has helped him greatly in this venture and life in general. He also sells mushroom seeds( grains coated with the fungus) to help others start in mushroom cultivation. (BTW the language is malayalam, majorly spoken in kerala)
