357 Mag Breaks Plate

  • After shooting the Rossi R92 in 454 Casull I also wanted to shoot my R92 in 357 Magnum. I didn't realize that the hard hitting 45 calibure rounds from the 454 Casull damaged the AR500 steel plate allowing for the final round of 357 Magnum to finish the job.

    The 454 Casull hits harder than the 357 -- a mild understatement 🤣🤣🤣

    I can also load my 16" Heritage 92 .357 with 9+1 rounds, even though they are advertised as 8-round magazines. I did not shorten the magazine spring nor make any modifications to my rifle whatsoever. It shoots dead-on at 100 yards with the factory dovetail sight elevated 1 notch only; and sighting with my poor RH eyesight. I have shot 50 rounds with no failures of any sort, and have no complaints so far! It is a great companion to my Heritage .357 revolver. Cheers!

    I hunt with my Rossi 92 SS .454 Casull and reload the Hornady 300 grain XTP Mag bullets along with my own 300 grain (291 actual) hard cast gas check bullets. I have taken 2 cow elk, several deer and lost count of hogs with it. I did install a 2-7x32mm Scout Scope on it. But she is a great hunting weapon.

    • @cervus-venator
      @cervus-venator  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's awesome Ray! I was wondering if the hard cast bullets would be something to use in hunting in order to get the penetration. The last hog I got I used the 45-70 and shot it in the head. I lost a shoulder on the far side because the bullet went all the way through. Right now all I have for the 454 Casull are hollow points and I am just a little leery about using these to hunt with. I like that scout scope you have too. Sounds like a great optic being so far forward of the receiver.

    • @raytribble8075
      @raytribble8075 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @ I do not know what hollow points you have, but the .454 Casull with Hornady XTP Mag bullets hold up well at at the 1878 FPS I am getting from a 20” barrel. I am driving my hard cast bullets to 1824 FPS and it was an in and out on a mature cow elk at 138 yards. 100-210 pound hogs are pass throughs also at 80-165 yards. The XTP Mags performed excellent on mule deer and white tail both along with hogs. Good luck hunting.

      @@raytribble8075 Thanks. What i shot in the 454 Casull video were Barnes bullets, but I have a box of the Hornady. Someone suggested before drifting the sight due to the Barnes shoot left was to try a different brand. So that is what I need to do anyway.

    The sharp corners on the square hole are breeding grounds for stress fractures. Next plate, find one that has a round hole, less likely to develop cracks like this plate has. Had a good "surprised face" looking group going right before the break, lol.

      @@cervus-venator I think welding AR500 might affect the hardening in the area of the weld...I might be wrong on that though. Either way, sounds like good advice to just replace the piece.

      Even further, that plate is drenched in lead, when you weld it, the lead turns into a progressively deadly poison. If you have to, only weld in a very well ventilated area and keep your head out of the fume plume.

    Don't know where yo got that plate, but I've been warned against Wallyworld steel, for that reason. Mine don't get much more than 22lr thrown at them.
    However, I am getting to the point of stepping up the abuse!

      I can't recall where I got it. Maybe a gun show or Ebay. I've shot this plate with the 45-70, 308, 5.56 you name it I've likely shot the plate with it. So I can't say too much bad about it. Which height front sight did you end up going with, with that Skinner rear sight? I’ve have the same rear sight and have been noodling out front height. I’m 3” high at 25 yds with the rear all the way down.

    • @cervus-venator
      @cervus-venator  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is the stock front sight that came with the gun. I'm not sure of its height, but it looks like 7/16 of an inch. Now, I do have the rear peep screwed out (up) a few turns. I kept tinkering with it until I got it hitting the target when centering up the front sight in the peep. Also, I have a smaller aperture in the peep, but not the smallest one.

    • @megastick9324
      @megastick9324 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ yeah some people can use the stock sight, mines too low. I need about 5/8ish to get me right and put my rear sight in approximately the middle of adjustment. I’m as low it’s it’ll go now and still 3” high at 25yds.
      I’ll order one a little taller than I think I need, can always file it some to bring it in.
      The front was fine on my 45-70 and Henry 22, it’s just this Rossi that’s whooped me.
      Thanks for the reply.

      @@megastick9324 I can tell you this. When my friend shoots this Rossi of mine it will not hit in the same place because our cheek welds are different. He needs a taller front sight. He ordered one for his R92 in 44 Mag so that he can get it shooting correctly for him.

    • @cervus-venator
      @cervus-venator  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For me personally it took me a bit to get used to, but it works fine now. I think it is easier than some sights, but the semi-buck horn that came on it was fine too. I used a peep in bow hunting for years that worked fine, but then again that peep is right in front of the eye. This one is quite a distance from the eye.
