What a magnificent instrument! The sound is absolutely beautiful and majestic in very register and dynamic. The contrabass trombone is an important instrument in e.g. the music of Edgard Varèse, and cannot be replaced by any other instrument (I once heard Intégrales performed with bass tuba as substitute, and the effect was completely wrong!).
The contra bone is the god of the low brass section, only appearing occasionally but bringing an awesome experience and sound that is hard to match. I wish i could see and hear more of it
@@andrewfielden284Your skill on one trombone will transfer easily to the other. The major obstacle is building the proper air support, a bass or a contra will knock the wind out of you. It also takes some time to be able to produce clarity in the lower register, and also get used to the weight
@@chief2632 Agreed. I transferred from tenor to bass. The breathing for me is the main thing to get used to. I'm having to accept that you can't play the same kind of phrasing on bass, the low register just takes more air.
@@andrewfielden284 Oh yeah it can be easy to sound sloppy below the E below the staff, just takes some adjusting. they're both amazing horns, you can almost feel the rumble when you hear it in person
Ive played a Getzen and Edwards Bass Trombones and now own the Getzen 3062AF Custom Series Bass; it plays as well as the Edwards I have tried, uses the same parts, has some (if not all, but they wont tell you) interchangeability with Edwards parts, but costs less and has fewer options to begin with. Besides the name on the horn, these instruments are essentially the same.
Mr van Dijk, I have a technical question; I have a Bach Stradivarius Bass Trombone. My question is "If I find a double slide to fit my trombone thus increasing the total length, will it operate as a contrabass trombone?; I'm aware the overall size of the bell, etc change and my Strad has a 10.5" diameter. I'll appreciate your answer.
No, I'm not a salesman. I've heard of all of these, but with Getzen's Custom Series, that kind of blows away any competition. And it's false that Edwards is better. Getzen and Edwards trombones are put together with the exact same parts by the exact same people with the exact same features. Literally only difference is one says Getzen on the bell and the other says Edwards.
Where can I get a Thein Contrabass Trombone b/c I've been playing a 56 year old trombone my dad had and I've played it from 5th grade - 12th grade. I've played 3rd trombone parts ever since freshman year and I never could hit many higher notes above the higher G, but I was pretty darn good with the lower notes though, I feel like a contrabass trombone can help me hit the lower notes I that I can't hit on my king Cleveland.
That is correct. But saying "Getzen makes the best trombones in the world" is a far cry from saying Getzens are very similar to Edwards. Which is only true up to a point.
How much does one of those cost b/c i always wanted to have one b/c i wish to play lower notes on trombone and my student trombone can't go any lower and i was wondering if there's a lyre for a contrabass trombone.
But have you played them? I'm serious, dude, Getzen makes great horns, but they're a step down from all of those, including Edwards. Edwards are custom horns, made with different parts (yes, different) usually in a custom way by craftsmen at Edwards, while Getzens are made a factory by different people. They have similar designs, but Edwards are where the good designs come from.
Are you a salesman? Getzen makes great horns, no doubt. But "highest rated and highest quality?" Have you heard of Shires? Edwards (made by the same people as Getzen, but better) or Rath? Greenhoe? Thein, even?
the sound of this great trombone is so beautiful
As a bass trombonist, i would love to play one of these.
What a pleasure to listen to you Maestro van Dijk!
thanks for posting this video. i am a big fan of Ben and Thein and together i feel they make the best bass trombone sound anywhere.
Ben,in my opinion you are the best bass trombonist.

god, i would kill to have one of these.
Beautiful Sound !!!!!! GREAT.!!!!
The contra bone is the god of the low brass section, only appearing occasionally but bringing an awesome experience and sound that is hard to match. I wish i could see and hear more of it
It is a wonderful sound. Wonder how hard it is to play properly. Sounds awesome with Ben playing, but he's a top class professional musician.
