Actually the correct quote is, "Never look encouragingly at the brass, except with a short glance to give an important cue.", and it's by Richard Strauss. It's probably changed and corrupted over time, probably by members of strings and woodwinds section, who realized no matter how hard they try, they can't outblow the tbones. ^_^ Imho, I thought it's important to attribute to quote to the correct person, otherwise might as well say Donald Trump said this.
I always wanted to get my hands on a contrabass, it must be amazing to play. I played bass trombone at championship level brass banding during the 90s / 00s, and know that there truly is no better feeling than that primal roar when you get the opportunity to really show your stuff. Wagner was absolutely one of my favourites to play, he knows how to really use that lower end of brass (ya know, the one that thousands completely waste with the "bum-bum, bum-bum" parts that show they have no idea what brass is supposed to do...).
I never realised that the Valkuries passage included the contrabass, even though I've always known it was in the ring orchestra. It often surprises me by the way that neither Bruckner nor Mahler used the contrabass trombone or bass trumpet. Missed opportunities perhaps!?
Great performance! I write from Milwaukee in March of 2017 where Maestro de Waart (another great contribution to the musical world from Holland) will soon be stepping down as musical director. He has his 76th birthday coming up on the first of June. He will be missed but we thank him for what he has done for our orchestra! I was able to see a stunning performance of The Planets a couple of weeks ago. Best orchestral piece ever written by a trombone player?
Powerful piece. What a brass section. Very bold and dynamic. Wagner was a genius. Too bad the general public associates the piece with Apocalypse Now and other films
It is true that the vast majority of contrabass trombones, including this specific Thein model, are pitched in F. However, there do exist, although less common, some models of contrabass trombone pitched in Bb, essentially making it a "slide tuba," so to speak (these usually have a double-wrapped slide).
Invincible1702 you hit it right on the head. I play in a trombone quartet in my HS. We have an alto/tenor player, a tenor player, a bass player, and a Bb contrabass player(me)
@@bobboscarato1313Although they’re FAR less common than the F contrabass, there are still a few makers who advertise a double-slide contra in either CC or BBb. Whether they’re still made depends on their need in the music industry, which is obviously very low (supply & demand), but it looks like there are manufacturers that will make them if requested.
Nope sorry. The baritone/euphonium is not an orchestral instrument. There are only a handful of pieces the include the euphonium. If you want to play in an orchestra, I suggest you switch to trombone.
thus why I have picked up trombone and bass trombone, honestly euphonium/baritone is only useful in brass bands, wind ensembles, drum corps, and a few other brass ensembles whilst trombone is useful basically everywhere

"Never look at the trombones. You just encourage them."----Richard Wagner
Great performance!
+5610winston actually it was Richard Strauss who said this
z0ne93 It's been attributed to several composers and conductors. And it's an accurate observation, whoever said it.

@@obiwan88 Don't give dotard any ideas because next thing you know, he's going to claim he said it.
That Richard Strauss that said that my friend.
That contrabass trombone is a monster. You could tell whenever it was playing with the rest of the tenor trombones

As soon as Ben comes in around 2:22 with the Bass Trombone the power just comes booming in. Nice sound!
lauder than tuba. sounds awesome, Ben!
Could Have been louder as in the hole trombone section. If your not Berrying
the Trumpets Your not loud enough, Or is that Tanhauser.
I love watching you man-handle the contrabass! One of my all time favorite clips.
Nice to hear this German music from a Dutch orchestra. ;)
Still rocking that moustache even 20 years ago!!

It doesn't. He just chose to use the contra here
It’s amazing what the double basses and tuba sound like playing the bass line with the trombones!

de arrepiar , a hora que a tuba entra junto com os trombones.
Long live trombone players!

What a ride !
Has anyone noticed that when the tuba joins in, the double basses play that bass line along with tuba
Yes that’s a common combination
@@Evanw10282 It sounds great!! And I bet it would be even better if there was a contrabassoon playing with them!
@@Evanw10282well I say that it is an awesome combination!
Welcher Bassposaunist hatte im Jahr 1997 solch eine Walküre gespielt?Vielen Dank, lieber Ben für all Deine Videos !!

Carson Stephens how the hell does your school own a Bb contrabass trombone
@@Invincible1702 I was informed that the double slide contrabass trombones were not made after 1905; I don't know if this is true!

@DonnyWangzilla At the very beginning of Die Walküre there is a high F# for the 4th trombone.
@contrabassbob It's a wagner horn
Is this masterpiece for baritone too
It’s a shame they couldn’t add in a contrabassoon and contrabass clarinet in too.
Those are wood instruments; we are talking brass here!

That thing's a fucking monster. o.o
Bill Gates rocking out on the double bass 4:06
Mmmm that's a thicc trombone
nice ;)
No they are not, they are pitched the same as a Bb tuba.

They take a lot more air than the tuba
How does ben have the self control to not play everything down an octave? I do that as a bass clarinet player...
Kenton V. I also do that as a bass trombone player
I dont like Classics as well. But Wagners Walküre is awesome!!!
Lol at like 4;20 all the cellists move their heads at like the same time lol
Zach Hathaway that are double basses
Contrabass more like ContraBOOM
hahahhahhah what? no!
I’m out of breath just watching him play
