      Hey old timer, I am a 71 year old mechanic, and I agree. I just thought I would mention something and see what you think: I have used Vaseline on the shaft of the shock to try to get the seals to last longer and not leak. In my experience, it does seem to extend the life of the shock.

      In all that dirt, dust and mud you go through you have to follow the "extreme conditions" maintenance schedule. Filters, fluids, diff and transfer case oils, grease fittings on drive shaft and u joints etc etc etc. You better learn how to change a serpentine belt out in the middle of no where. If that breaks ur done. No belt, no water pump. Also should have emergency coolant hose repair kit. Blow a hose, ur done. So your stupid little leaking shock just means you have been getting ripped off over and over by your favorite mechanic and stealership.

    Shock absorbers keep vehicles from bouncing like a pogo stick. A worn out/leaking shock will make things bouncier but won't damage anything (except the shock) as long as you don't go bouncing into anything like an oncoming car. So take things easy and there should be no problem. And in my opinion, 140k miles is still young for a truck-like vehicle.

      Unfortunately, the Icons are integrated with the life kit. They have a user adjustable valve that will raise or lower the vehicle height. The Bilsteins reuse the existing springs, so they do nothing for lifting the vehicle. If she goes Bilsteins, she will then have to have a lift kit installed to compensate for what the Icons do.

    I want to ride my Enduro out there. Billstein shocks are very reputable. I just rebuilt my little Toyota Corolla front end and drove very easy on seasonal roads today in West Michigan. I love exploring. I made it through that little sand road and a Big 4x4 truck was entering as we passed. We both waved. He must have been laughing. Lol. Take it easy because components break down and if you are doing a lot of heavy Duty mountain two track your system needs to be inspected and worked on. Race car drivers have their engine rebuilt after every race. Just a gauge to go by when pushing a vehicle to its limit. Not a daily Driver for longevity. High endurance and keeping things in shape. I've really enjoyed watching your vids for the last few days. Cheers. Happy Travels. Thank You for the good laughing with your comments in different situations. You are a comedian.

    Worry not dear wonderhussy, this 77 year old mechanic is informing you a leaking shock is just not a serious issue. When you were looking/showing the front suspension I noticed that the sway bar bushing was gone, but is also a non issue as far is driving the truck is concerned, but may make a clanking sound, which is also not considered disqualifying. It is in the left front. Rest assured you can complete your current assignment with no danger to any component. Also the Bilstein shock alternative is a really good idea, and won't have to be rebuilt at all ever and enjoy a very long life being the best shocks there are.

    Icons and other suspension systems with reservoirs will require regular inspection and servicing. The Icon design is also digressive so the cycling of washboard roads and high speed will fatigue them a bit faster.

  • @johncampbell2979
    @johncampbell2979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    HI! Sarah, it's relatively safe to drive on a leaking shock, the only thing to be warey of, your steering will pull to that side, so keep your speed down, also if one is bust it's always best to get two on the same axle to give equal balance, I myself have driven for hundreds of miles on both bursted shock and spring, but much slower.

    • @EfficientRVer
      @EfficientRVer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, even a totally worn out shock is not an emergency or reason to worry.
      A leaking or even completely drained/ineffective shock won't change steering, create pulling, or anything else. It is the spring which holds the weight of the car and locates the position of the suspension. The shock only dampens out bouncing. A broken spring can be a real concern and should be dealt with soon, a broken shock does not matter much, although racing over bumps with worn out or drained shocks will be too bouncy and not keep the tire in contact with the road the maximum amount possible for best handling.
      Any serious problem you had was caused by a bad spring, not a bad shock. I had a coil spring on a 97 Altima snap in half. That side of the car dropped 1-2 inches, and the jagged broken end of one of the pieces was in danger of getting tangled in rotating parts or cutting the tire. I couldn't extract it from where it was, so I just tied it out of the way with rope similar to paracord. Then when I got home, I cut it up with a grinder and extracted it in two pieces. The car was near end of life for other reasons, so I just let it sit on the remaining 3/4 of the original length of spring for its last year of life. I forget whether I did something to keep it in the right place, seeing as one end of it was not attached, just held in place by other stuff around it, and gravity pushing the car down on top of it.

    Hiya Miss Hussy, The shock is fine till you can get it fixed or replaced If you have them fixed have the shop that works on it to check the bump stops you may be bottoming out the shock if I remember you had this before and when everything is set up right the bumps top is to limit travel so it does not blow the seals , I just put a lift on my truck and the kit did not come with the longer bump stops so I had to order them its a easy part to replace so it shouldn't be that much money wise , I had plans on pulling my rv out and doing some travels but with the price of fuel looks like it will be on the Harley this summer be safe and take care young lady

    If the rig doesn't feel particularly squirrel, it's not a big problem. A bad shock would be more problematic on I40 @ 70mph. Think of the truck nosediving to one side when you're next to an 18 wheeler. 140,000 is just broken in. My Cherokee is well over 200,000 and running fine.
