    Former deputy editor of The Ecologist, Kingsnorth is co-founder of The Dark Mountain Project, a network of writers, artists, and thinkers who have stopped believing the stories our civilization tells itself and are in search of new paradigms for a world on the brink. Kingsnorth has supplied this need with poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. In his latest collection of essays, Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist, he discusses the disillusion that drove him from goals such as sustainability to a radical “dark ecology,” dedicated to preserving the wild for its own sake. As envisioned in his new novel, Beast, a sequel of sorts to his Man Booker-longlisted The Wake, the wild is an empty moor in the west of England. Edward Buckmaster, undergoing an acute existential crisis, is distracted from his internal demons by the realization that he’s being stalked by some kind of animal he never quite catches sight of.

    One of the co-founders of Greenpeace, Patrick Moore, also walked away from being an environmental activist. In a statement before the Senate Environmental Committee in 2014, he said "I had to leave as Greenpeace took a sharp turn to the political left, and began to adopt policies that I could not accept from my scientific
    perspective."
    Now he's labeled as a skeptic and climate change denier just for questioning the data behind IPCC conclusion.

      Right. Added greenhouse gases don't do anything. 8 billion people don't harm nature. Heck, even atom bombs are benign

    Interesting that he became a Christian after exploring so many options. Have to hand it to him for swimming against the current as all the cool kids were wondering "what the ...."
    Turns out to be a true seeker rather than bending reality to confirm ones own bias.

      I've just come here from other interviews and this fascinates me as well. Looking into orthodoxy I have learned that the mystical traditions of Christianity have quite a bit in common with the eastern traditions in that they all describe a sort of dualism that exists as a paradoxical property of a greater/nondual whole rather than separately existing entities in of themselves. As a taoist thinker I very much understand his reluctance towards the fundamental reality presented in Buddhism which can be seen as nihilistic in nature as opposed to the sort of marriage between truth, love, and beauty offered in the mystery of the orthodox view of God. I find myself drawn to learning about both traditions and respectively regretting that I cannot participate/embody either.

    The problem at the bottom of many such discussions is the assumption that man evolved from animals and is nothing more than an animal. It can now be shown that thete are great gaps in Darwin's Theory and he even admitted that himself. Intelligent design and mans spiritual nature are what is missing

    Interesting that he mentions oral cultures and their relationship with their habitats, and then goes on to discuss how we would go about relating this in the (symbolic) writing cultures. Perhaps it is not possible. Perhaps we can never fully express the felt experience into abstract processes, and nor should we.

    This is great exposition of our "civilization" but short on answers, as he even admits right at the end. The worship of Gaia would be one way out -- understanding that we are all part of the living "organism" that is the world -- including the rocks and the oceans, etc. He touches on religion and Dark Mountain touts "Art" as the solution, but a new religion is the only way to really move people. Imagine if all of the energy that goes into these archaic myths was channeled instead into living in harmony with the living breathing mother?
    When I was a kid, I learned the stations of the cross, but I never learned that storm drains channel water directly into rivers and eventually the ocean, or that a light switch controls how much coal is burnt. Think about that!

    • @thomasmurphy9429
      @thomasmurphy9429 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think the point he implied is there will be no "mass" solutions. There will be mass collapse, and in its wake recoveries unique to individual communities.

    • @DJLiquidSmooth
      @DJLiquidSmooth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A solution isn't a "New religion" but an understanding of the original Creator, who is God who created all in 6 days and rested the 7th day. We were created in His image. This is where we derive our humanity from.
      Most of the world does not know God, that's why it dehumanizes people, because it no longer knows what a person truly is, because it no longer knows the creator. And by not knowing the Creator, it has not idea how to treat the Creator's creation.

      @@DJLiquidSmooth Hmm, yea, but no. That's the path we've been on for centuries & it ain't working. It's a beautiful story tho.

      @@pas9ify we really have not been on that path. I think Catholicism, which is a counterfeit Christianity, has done alot to derail people from that path.
      The first commandment of God is "I am the Lord your God who brought you OUT of the land of Egypt......"
      The Catholic church holds onto alot of customs and gods of Egypt and Babylon. So it is trying to being you back IN to Babylon.
      Even most so called "non Catholic" churches take part in ecumenism, where they are meeting with the pope and have the Pope as head of the movement. So they actually are daughters of the Catholic church.
      And the bible in Revelation speaks of a Great Whore (a large unfaithful church) that will have harlot daughters (smaller churches that follow it's lead) that will push for a world government that will outwardly look christian, but will be antichrist (in place of christ) which is what the Pope is, a so called substitute for Christ.
      And what we see today is the Pope pushing for a one world government through man made disasters the bring about more corporate fascism.
      The Vatican has already partnered with the biggest corporations in the world.
      Evil people with no care about true Christianity partner with the Vatican cause they see it as an easy path to success, since the Vatican has over 1 billion Catholics under it, so it has a wide amount of connections and influence.
      This is what you have mainly seen for centuries, the growth of this whore and the growth of her power. And the growth of her unfaithfulness to God.
      Real churches and Christians are very hard to find. Most people will choose a path comfort and as long as they feel "moral enough" they feel like they can do enough virtue signaling to satisfy their conscious, they will go down that path.
      But Jesus says "the Way is narrow, and few find it". The Catholic church is obviously a BROAD way, which will take you to hell.

    • @pas9ify
      @pas9ify 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DJLiquidSmooth Yea, IDK, good luck with all that, it sounds like conspiracy thinking. I'll stick with Gaia worship. I know about "faith in the unseen" but I like things I can see & touch or at least stuff science tells me, and right now, we are on the path to collapse as a civilization.
      I don't think your god or any religion can really help. As an example, many of the superspreader events occurred in churches. That should tell you something right there.
      I get what you are saying about Catholics, but really most churches are party to hate & condemning those who don't follow them. Then there is indoctrination and corruption in churches whose leaders siphon off money.
      Yet, I do see the value as community organs, that's about it. As long as they keep preaching a man-god with man at the top of the world, we will continue destroying the ecosystem.
