      Not sure if it will work with fire ants but when I had an invasion of black ants in our house I put out bait traps with a combination of water sugar and baking powder in a sort of syrup. I would pop a little dollop down on the ground and they would swarm and drink from it then take it back to the colony where I guess they met their end as they never returned after the first feeding. Maybe give that a go in the coop since it's non toxic for the chickens :)

    As a gardener and ant enthusiast. I usually make a few trips back and forth with boiling water.
    You need to locate as many fire ant nest entrances as possible. This can take a day or so of observing the ants, however once you do you can just take a few pots of boiling water and pour it slowly over all entrances. I then take extra time to pour more around it. Essentially saturate the ground with boiling water. I repeat this process over a few days as long as I see fire ants in the area. Tracking them down and observing them is the true key to begin exterminating them at the source nests.
    If you let fire ants continue out of control they will grow absolutely massive underground colonies. If this is the case with the ones you're dealing with you will most likely need a professional.
    Flooding fire ants with normal water will not work as their original habitat is prone to floods and they are highly adept at surviving them. They even make entire rafts out of ants to float the colony to safety. They are invasive though so I always reccomend getting rid of them. I try to avoid ant poisons in general since I don't want to kill the native ant colonies more than the fire ants already are.
    As for all the plant instructions, they're there to help your harvesting. Collecting the food in a tangle of plants is annoying and keeping pests, specifically pest insects, out of a mass is also annoying. Plants also compete with eachother and choke eachother out to grow larger so the spacing helps keep unessacary plant deaths out of the equation. Plants may be older than humans but a lot of them are modified by humans so they don't actually always do well by just letting nature take it's course tons of crops need attention depending on why type of species of a crop you got. There's tons of corn types you could get but they're all way different from the original wild corn found so long ago.
    I'm super excited to see how this is going to go though! I hope it all works out and I definitely reccomend trying to boil the fire ants away from the chicken coop, they could cause injuries to your chickens too!
    Edit: some ants will protect aphids, a food source for them, which are a plant pest. So you may have trouble with your garden if fire ants choose to live in it. I don't remember if they farm aphids or not, but aphids are an annoying plant killer.

    Something I can actually (kind of) help with. I grew Cucumbers in FL like 2 summers ago it was super easy and they grow fast, they need lots of water and SUPPORT. That thing you saw in the TH-cam video was a trellis, cucumbers are like a vine and they've got these little tentacle things that'll grab and wrap themselves around whatever is nearby. Sometimes other plants! So yeah you'll definitely want to get one of those, it's kind of fun watching them grow and climb up the trellis like a ladder.

    if you don't thin out your carrots, you'll only get nubs the size of your fingers. the leaves on that tree will be perfect to maintain your beds over winter, as they will provide awesome cover for all the good bugs. I know this is just a hobby, but germinating your seeds first and then planting will ensure a better rate for harvest.

    • @kudzu_
      @kudzu_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thinning out isn't as crucial as having loose soil. Compact soil = nubby carrots. They need loamy or constantly aerated dirt.

  • @adiidi
    @adiidi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Lettuce needs light to grow, and carrots are supposed to be planted under hardly any soil as well, so those were likely planted too deep.
    It's probably too late in the year for cucumbers because they thrive in hot summer weather, and don't be surprised if the broccoli doesn't pop up, either because you started it outdoors/too late in the season. Just keep the beds moist and hope you get something!
    If nothing pops up within a week or two, look up a planting chart for your climate zone (NC has 4 or 5 zones) and it'll tell you which vegetables and how late you can plant them in your area. You can get more lettuce, carrot and whatever seeds you want and replant. Keep an eye out for dwarf versions of vegetables, as well as they'll grow faster (like short or round varieties of carrots).

The black pepper shouldn't hurt your chickens either. Best hurry though so that they don't take over that section too. I feel for you though. Sorry you're going through this. You should definitely plan to impulse drive to the beach! Especially now when it's warm and beautiful out. Your seedlings should really be thinned after they are about 2-3 inches tall. just pull out the skinny puny ones. It will give you bigger broccoli heads and fatter carrots. Gardening rule #1 never plant veg that you won't eat. How about green beans? You will need a trellis or tomato cage for the cucumbers. The bugs will eat them if they lay on the ground. Good luck! seed sowing is pretty easy if you remember one thing. Seeds want to be about as deep as they are big. So a tiny broccoli seed or lettuce seed will be only just covered with a sprinkle of dirt as thick as they are, while a larger seed like a pea, bean, pumpkin, wants to be under the soil a little ways with the same thickness of dirt on top as they are thick. To know how far apart to plant the seeds there is 2 methods, you can sow them close and heaps, but you will have to pull out a bunch of little plants once they are up so that there is room for what gets left in to mature, OR think about how big the mature plant will be and space the seeds so that they are about that far apart. So a carrot only needs a small spacing, while a broccoli needs a large spacing cause the adult plant gets BIG. Hope that helps.

      Try boiling water. It may take persistence but if you keep applying it to any fire ant nests you see you may hit the queen and kill the colony or beat the colony out by killing them faster than they can produce.
      So you might have to throw a pot of boiling water or 2 in the nest entrances for a few days or weeks.
      It can take alot of time depending on how big the colony is though so if it's too large it might not work. Works better if you saturate the entrance and a small area around the entrance as well as finding as many entrances beforehand by observing the ants and hitting them all in one go.

    So I’ve had issues with ants too. Use food grade diatomaceous earth. It’s basically really finely ground up chalk. You’ll have to use it basically after every rain, but it will kill the ants as long as you sprinkle it heavily around their nests. It gives them micro cuts, and they basically die from dehydration and blood loss. You can also help by encouraging herps that eat ants to hang around your garden. I like toads personally.

    for mosquitos try wearing long sleeves and pants treated with permethrin, then you don't have to wear sticky big spray. I went on a 2 week canoeing trip and it worked. You can buy them pretreated i think or just buy the bottle of spray and choose a thin loose shirt that you'll wear working (I went to bass pro). It lasts like 50 washes or something. Good luck with all your allergy things and garden work! I definitely understand what you are saying about uncertainty at the moment for people our age definitely i think.

    Yes cucumbers grow upwards. When they start sprouting a few leaves try buying a trolling or something to help them climb. If you let them grow on the ground they can become misshapen or small but if they climb they grow long.

    Grab fire ant bait (I use Extinguish Plus) and either spread it very very lightly around the outside of the chicken coop, or inside and stand next to it and wait for them to pick it up. Once its picked up you will get about 6 months of control.

      This is because you used the wrong product, your goal is to get the product to the queen which can be 10 feet underground. So bait is the best option so they bring it down to the larva, then proceed to feed it to the queen.

    • @kudzu_
      @kudzu_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessary. I was raised on a farm in the south and continue to grow now as an adult. I never germinate inside. It can result in weak, leggy seedlings. The growing season is long enough here to not need it. The only thing I don't direct sow is tomatoes. Those I plant in solo cups (outside) and gradually add dirt to as they sprout for root growth, then bury most of the plant in its permanent place.

    I'm sure you get endless suggestions, but have you tried Dish soap and water I used dawn in my planters and the ants left, it isn't GREAT for the plant to do it offten but you do what ya gotta do, and nothing bad happened the ants just got outta my pots, I put up the pots and sprayed the ground haven't had any issue since.

    Cucumbers will vine everywhere so I do recommend getting something for them to grab onto (Trellis) unless you want them to cover your entire garden walkway 😵‍💫
    P.S. Make sure you thin the plants that need it. Learned that lesson with our Tomato and Pepper plants this year. If they get too dense it creates a better environment for disease and pests to thrive. I spent all spring battling pests and diseases on all of my plants, not just those two.
    -I highly recommend being diligent with Pesticides, Fungicides etc this year. From what i’ve heard, It’s just been a terrible year for gardening (so it’s not just me). Some years are apparently just worse than others with pests and disease and this year is one of those years. I’ve grown tomatoes, strawberries and blueberries in previous years and never needed any pesticides or anything, never had a problem, but this year all of them are looking pretty sad.
