Allowing them to roam the new garden when it's set up though would be a good idea! They'll be able to pick off any ants that try to explore the area and hopefully keep them from nesting there.
maybe see about making garden boxes that you put onto tall legs, then treat the legs with ant poison to prevent them from climbing and getting into the beds?
I still think the best method is boiling water mixed with dawn dish soap. my grandma always said to use this method or use a combo of pouring baking soda into the hole and then vinegar. I've personally seen the water work but she used to deal with fire ants in Oklahoma
I'm sure it doesn't work, but when I was really little and living in Florida, I remember putting grits into ant hills. For some reason I thought that they would eat it and it would expand in their stomachs and grow.
Fire ants in Florida don't drown. They form floating ant islands in the flood that you don't want to brush up against. They climb up your leg in seconds in a swarm. They ate me and my dachshund up one day in a rainstorm
yeah this happened to me a few years ago. I knew fire ants could form rafts to keep the colony from drowning, but I'd never actually seen it. So when massive flooding hit Louisiana and I saw a mysterious fluffy looking blob in the water my curiosity got the best of me and well..... I grabbed a fist full of fire ants lmao
They got my dachshund too one day when she went to pee. Dumb ants built a hill in one of the areas she likes to pee at (yes, shes picky) and they had immediate access to her ass since it almost touches the ground when she pees. Only it ended up touching the ant hill when she peed because of the soft ground. It isn't actually her butt that touches the ground when she pees but I don't know if youtube will allow the proper medical terms for dog parts. I don't even think I can say the g word
@@zebraloverbridget We had a downpour and the fire ants were covering the road to get out of the wet ground, I didnt know it. I had put off on my legs for the mosquitoes and that stopped them from climbing on me thankfully. Luckily my little boy was ok too
fireants do indeed bite AND sting, at least im pretty sure they do. they are also highly aggressive, so always be careful when handling/dealing with them!
Step 1:boil water Step 2:pour it on the colony at least 10 times, so it gets down to the queen. Normal water isn't that big of a problem for them, but boiled water kills instantly, and gets deep, unlike a blowtorch. You could also use napalm, but im afraid the Geneva Convention won't allow that
When I was 4 or 5, I feel into a fire ant hill and just stood there screaming. My wolf dog tried pulling me out but she could not. In the end, she howled and howled and eventually my dad showed up and pulled me out. I was hospitalized for a bit. There on after, I would have bad reactions to both ants and bees. Fun times. Fun times.
Following. I'm moving to property in Florida with a shit ton of red ants. I realize already that 100% elimination is not possible but was HOPING I could maintain a space or two and keep it clear. The end of this video doesn't make me optimistic but keep trying dood
I hope all goes well! Seriously though, fire ants are resilient. They keep forming nests in my front yard even after several sprays of poison. But maybe if you ask them nicely they’ll go away? That’s my best advice. Really though, adding dishsoap to the water to drown them might work, but idk how safe that is for the environment.
It's completely fine to use (dish soap & water can even be sprayed on plants) but idk if water & dish soap alone could get rid of an infestation of fire ants. Even if they weren't fire ants, underground ant colonies can be absolutely massive.
If he can kill back the fire ant colonies temporarily, I wonder if bringing in a native and species and encouraging it's population growth could keep the fire ants at bay. No one is better at waging war on ants than other ants.
Rubber boots might help. Landscape fabric under the plots might not help too much with the ants, but it will definitely help with those grass rhizomes.
Allergic reactions wok off of histamine reactions. The body is very sensitive to histamines and they can cause smooth muscles in the baronial tubes to contract leading to anaphylactic shock. So you never want to try and build immunity by having repeated bites even in small dosses.
honestly its probably for the best that nothing got planted in the garden. Imagine spending the time & money on crops and then gong to tend your garden and all your vegis, fruits, herbs are all covered in fire ants, let alone harvesting them lol
allergy shots do work, i had it done for bee venom at an allergy clinic over a period of 6 months. ive been stung by a hornet since then and my reaction wasnt nearly as severe as the first time. i still needed my epi pen but it didnt swell up and hive up as quick.
I read that swallows eat the queen when they are fling/dispersing/swarming to one thing you could do is put of a bird out made for a tree swallow or if you wanted to get ambitious a purple martin house
I know normal ants you can mix baking soda and powdered sugar and leave piles of them around the nest. They can’t tell the difference and when they eat it they explode when they take it back to the nest. It’s safe for other animals.
You should add cardboard to the bottom of your garden beds, it will kill the grass from coming up into it and it will make it harder for the ants to get into the bed again. I would cover the whole area you are going to use in cardboard. then you can put down wood chips or rocks on the not garden part. Good luck Kiddo.
I can’t believe you didn’t try Grits Pour some grits on their nests, they eat it and combined with moisture, it expands and pops them It’ll kill the nest in less than a few days
Ohmygosh I feel your pain I stepped in a nest when I was 4 or 5 and all I remember is the most intense burning and horrible sensation before I passed out and went to the hospital! Hope you recover soon and I agree you should get that epinephrine!!
Greetings! I have was diagnosed with an anaphylactic venom allergy to fire ants, all wasps and bees. I would have pressed your doc for an Epipen. A reaction that severe warrants epinephrine. BTW: Epipens don't always save folks. If the allergic reaction is strong enough it can still kill you even with the use of epinephrine. After being stung multiple times and almost losing consciousness the last time, I still garden, but I take a lot of precautions. It can be done! Quality of life is soo important!
you need to wear wellies. and have two rings of ducktape on both boots sticky side out. also do the same at the cuffs of your gloves. you are literally playing with fire and this could genuinely kill you in less than 20mins if your reaction turns anaphylactic.
If they are on the wood moving the wood would only move the ants to your new garden. anothet snatural thing you can Is by planting marygolds through out your beds. They are a natural pest.
Only way I know that really works, tractor and till, run the land two or three times, in-between each run you lay your chemicals. You wait a year then plant again.
Disturbing a fire ant nest just makes them move and go deeper. To take them out do not disturb the nest, just poison it. Mound Destroyer from home depot works in 24 hours. Just sprinkle that all over and come back a week later. Then replace all the garden dirt. For the entire property yard pest control guys can take care of that or you can poison the whole yard at once. You're better off getting rid of the ants for a season and then planting gardens next season.
Not a bad idea for individual hills. I could also just attach a hose directly to the water heater under the house and flush it. It needs to be flushed out anyways
Hey Alex what's the thing called that you ride on in your vlogs? You were talking about how you were hoping it would protect you from ant bites in this video because it would run them over before they could crawl up.
get a beekeeper suit to avoid getting stung, may seem extreme but with how allergic you are its better to err on the side of caution. poison the entire yard, then reseed it with native isopods and springtails after the yard is safe enough that it wont just kill them. at least reseed the part you're putting your garden on, it'll help your crops flourish. other suggestions not related to ants: make bee hotels and plant some native flowers to attract native bees (NOT HONEYBEES. honey bees are invasive and are less effective for pollination than native bees). Plant milkweed for monarch butterflies too.
I have the same problem on my 2 acres. My 5 year old got covered yesterday because his slide was covered in them, I guess since it was raining before that. If you find a solution, please share
the doctor doesnt sound very good. a friend of mine is allergic to bees and never got told "to not get stung" like shes trying her best not to but that shouldnt be the only thing she has in case it happens anyways.
Make a lil green house 😊 typically you can find local repurpose markets for materials or even the dump honestly so many people throw away the clear roofing and it would make it just that much harder for the ants to get to your garden
I’m actually annoyed that the doctor didn’t seem receptive to your questions about venom. You can get shots for certain types of venom that are much like traditional allergy shots. In fact, I just googled it, and you can definitely get immunotherapy shots for fire ants specifically. I think you need to check if her practice has any affiliation with the local colonies.
I have a quarterly exterminator who comes to spray dog safe stuff in my yard and my house just because of fire ants. The company let's me call them for an extra service once a year between services at no extra charge. I highly recommend you look into this too. It's dramatically cheaper than doctor visits too.
Wow I never seen so much ants In a garden and lawn before. I was going to suggest boric acid but it not good for gardens. Keep us updated I want to see what happens next.
What if you planted tall stuff there that wouldnt require you rummaging in dirt? Ex. train tomato vines so the leafy branches and fruit is all high up. Then you could use a hose to blast the small amount of ants that would cover the plants before you did maintenance, and you could bring a platform to stand on/wear boots/maybe even cover the walking path with stone
OK so apparently the boric acid will work for your fire ants! It is something they eat and it works within a few days so long as they take the bait (they collect it and take it home to share with all their mates in the nest). So maybe it's something you can use to help get rid of them? Either way good luck.

I like the dramatic Latin music towards the end, it fits well.
I assume the lyrics really resonate with me
Make sure to keep the chickens away from nesting sites! Enough fire ants can kill a chicken or quail
Watching all those ants crawl around is making me itchy. I hate it. Fingers crossed the poison works.
Dish soap is good for breaking down hydrophobic layers on things so water would get into the bug's body more easily.
I’m surprised that the doctor dismissed it. Ants are so common that you need some form of protection.
Fire ant queen to her subjects: "Everything the light touches, is our kingdom."
Fire ants in Florida don't drown. They form floating ant islands in the flood that you don't want to brush up against. They climb up your leg in seconds in a swarm. They ate me and my dachshund up one day in a rainstorm
Holy shit that's nightmare fuel
yeah this happened to me a few years ago.
NOT THE DACHSHUND!! .. 😞
@@zebraloverbridget We had a downpour and the fire ants were covering the road to get out of the wet ground, I didnt know it. Schultzy cried and I shined a light on him they were covering him, even on his face. I brushed them off with my hand and bathed him in a doggie medicated shampoo when we got in. I had put off on my legs for the mosquitoes and that stopped them from climbing on me thankfully. Luckily my little boy was ok too
You’re correct Alex, fire ants do in fact bite and then sting. I’ve been stung numerous times by them; they’re quite common in my area
Your doctor's response was super disappointing. I'm glad to see you're going a little better, and that you now know what you're fighting.
bro you will NEVER catch me losing to a bug fr fr
Love the tragic telenovela music in the background…. very fitting
That type of ant doesn't drown and is almost impossible to kill
Edit:they like the humidity after being flooded so dry them out or poison them
fireants do indeed bite AND sting, at least im pretty sure they do. they are also highly aggressive, so always be careful when handling/dealing with them!
Step 1:boil water
Step 2:pour it on the colony at least 10 times, so it gets down to the queen.
Also, I really appreciate the Vince Gilligan-esque directing of this vlog.
OMG you work so hard. And it was so painful. Please get help with your project. Noone should hurt so much trying to garden.
"Doctor it hurts when I do this thing"
"Don't do that thing then.
Ok. That'll be $200"
honestly its probably for the best that nothing got planted in the garden. Imagine spending the time & money on crops and then gong to tend your garden and all your vegis, fruits, herbs are all covered in fire ants, let alone harvesting them lol
Dudes got so much ants that I thought that tickling on my leg under my covers in bed was ants when it was just a hair
This just made me remember when fire ants took over my kitchen. they almost won.
Well it's the ants' yards now, be glad they still allowed you to live on their premises
That doctor wasn't helpful
that's how it goes
GRITS! Aren't you supposed to feed fire ants grits? Its supposed to expand in there stomachs and kill them. At least that's what I've been told.
allergy shots do work, i had it done for bee venom at an allergy clinic over a period of 6 months. ive been stung by a hornet since then and my reaction wasnt nearly as severe as the first time. i still needed my epi pen but it didnt swell up and hive up as quick.
I read that swallows eat the queen when they are fling/dispersing/swarming to one thing you could do is put of a bird out made for a tree swallow or if you wanted to get ambitious a purple martin house
whats the song at 8:40
I'm fully invested now, you must win.
Cinnamon gets rid of ants, it works in my chicken feed! I use it on ant piles in my yard.
I can’t believe you didn’t try Grits
Pour some grits on their nests, they eat it and combined with moisture, it expands and pops them
It’ll kill the nest in less than a few days
I haven't watched it all but I've used the little yellow crumbles that poison them and it's killed them all off
Ohmygosh I feel your pain
I stepped in a nest when I was 4 or 5 and all I remember is the most intense burning and horrible sensation before I passed out and went to the hospital!
Quality of life is soo important!
that sucks D: i successfully got an epipen and i have allergic reactions to way more things ever since this video!
The most dramatic music ever. Loved it.
you need to wear wellies. and have two rings of ducktape on both boots sticky side out. also do the same at the cuffs of your gloves. you are literally playing with fire and this could genuinely kill you in less than 20mins if your reaction turns anaphylactic.
If they are on the wood moving the wood would only move the ants to your new garden. anothet snatural thing you can Is by planting marygolds through out your beds. They are a natural pest.
CHALLENGE: Do one of those aluminum anthill casts lmao
Edit: it’s actually not a bad idea, they are nasty invasives
Only way I know that really works, tractor and till, run the land two or three times, in-between each run you lay your chemicals.
You wait a year then plant again.
I don't know what worse, Alex's near death experience or me having no coffee to start the day.
What if you attach your hose top your kitchen tap and turn the water on extra hot- then flood then with scalding hot water?
"I'm gonna micro dose that flippin' ant venom," spoken like a true badass
the doctor doesnt sound very good. a friend of mine is allergic to bees and never got told "to not get stung" like shes trying her best not to but that shouldnt be the only thing she has in case it happens anyways.
Orange oil?
Make a lil green house 😊 typically you can find local repurpose markets for materials or even the dump honestly so many people throw away the clear roofing and it would make it just that much harder for the ants to get to your garden
I’m dying 😂
“she said I can’t micro-dose any venom.” 😔
May I introduce you to our good friend... Molten metals? (jk, this is super dangerous, don't do that) (Altough, that could work)
nnooooo dont let the ants win, call an exterminator xD
build solid under your garden and build off ground ?
The music choice cracked me up
7:17 Omegalul. Paying for an appointment. The good old US of A.
hi alex i just want u to know ur the only youtuber i still watch consistently
:D
Dang Alex, I'm sorry you had to go through this.
i related to the benadryl pill sending you to space. there is never a time that ive taken it that i havent been sent to space.
Maybe try some off the ground garden beds this season😬
Hey Alex! Hope your garden relocation works!
i am invested in this saga. dont die
Then you could use a hose to blast the small amount of ants that would cover the plants before you did maintenance, and you could bring a platform to stand on/wear boots/maybe even cover the walking path with stone
lettuce :(
That dirt soup looks delicious
pre-added spice, too
@@GoHerping 😋
OK so apparently the boric acid will work for your fire ants! It is something they eat and it works within a few days so long as they take the bait (they collect it and take it home to share with all their mates in the nest). So maybe it's something you can use to help get rid of them? Either way good luck.
