They were always college kids up until '92 when they let pros compete at the Olympic Games for the first time. And guess what? By 1984 they won all of them but 2 times ('72 and '80): they ended with the silver medal in 1972 and in 1980 they boycotted the 'soviet games' and didn´t participate. So, winning the gold medal at that time with college kids was nothing out the norm.

My 7 year old nephew was flying to Denver to visit his dads family. He sat next to Bob Knight on the plane. My nephew said, “ my granny likes you a lot but my paw paw doesn’t like you at all.” Coach said, “where do they live?” He answered, “Kentucky.” Coach laughed and said, “i’ll take 50% approval rating from there any day.” This Kentucky boy hates losing to Indiana but Coach is a class act.

Coach Knight told his friend Stu Inman, the General Manager of the Portland Trailblazers to draft Jordan over Sam Bowie in 1984. Inman told Knight .. 'But, I need a Center'. Knight's response .. For the younger viewers out there, the last NCAA men's team to go undefeated and win the National Championship was the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers coached by the General Bob Knight
And he thinks his '75 team was even better. Injuries hurt that squad. Scott May's broken arm allowed Kentucky to win the region. Hoosiers were a great, great team those two seasons, one of the best rosters in NCAA history, with maybe the best backcourt ever.

I went to IU in the early 90s. He would give these talks to students for free. Inspirational, funny, motivating. Never used any notes - just spoke off the cuff. He was/is an incredible talent. Hail to old IU!
he had an incredible memory. most lose it by age 60, Knight didn't lose his till the age of 70. He also was an ESPN commentator well into his 60's when most are resting on a beach in Florida sipping on a cocktail trying to remember what they were doing an hour ago.
Coach Knight is missed, cherished, and well respected here in Indiana. My grandparents and dad just thought the world of him. My personalized and autographed ball from Coach is something I will cherish for the rest of my life. Thank u Coach Knight for being an incredible coach in basketball and life. I went to Bob Knight basketball camp in 1980 when I was 16. Middle of the summer and 95 degrees every day. My HS coach was there too with his two young boys. One day, Bob was giving a talk in the gym and makes an off hand comment something like “if you can find me a better point guard than Isaiah Thomas, it’ll snow a foot tomorrow.” Later that night at dinner the two boys were insisting their dad find a way to get winter coats. Dad says “it’s 95 degrees out, why in the world would you want winter coats?” They both responded in earnest “Bob Knight said it’s going to snow a foot tomorrow”. I’ve never seen anyone command a room like the general.

It was after the draft but before his first season. Had the draft come after the Olympics the Bulls might not have gotten the pick (at least that what Rod Thorn said)

That's right, I was at Dick Bennett's Basketball camp, asked Coach Bennett How Teri Porter was doing in Olympics tryouts that summer. Teri Porter had the flu and was picked as one of the Olympic alternates. UWSP div.3 , Teri Porter played some good ball for Portland against Jordan's Bulls, some great battles. I was going into my Senior of Highschool, I have never seen anyone play which such intensity as Jordan, and never seen anyone Coach with more intensity than Knight. The Greatest are often not liked.. MJ is still the best modern era player in my lifetime. Larry Bird is up there too. MJ soared when there was no 3 point line and physical hand checking was allowed. Plus his persona off the court speaks for itself.

Knight deserves credit for realizing Jordan's ability in college, but he was the #3 pick in the draft. It's not as if people didn't universally expect him to be an elite perennial all-star type player. He just wasn't seen as an all time great the way Bob saw him.
Kobe Bryant 13th pick. He wasn't even in the all rookie team of that year. Next year he shot 4 airballs at the end of the 4th quarter and overtime in game 5 vs Jazz in the playoffs. Who would have thought he was going to be the best western conference player of all time. Not me.

He only played 15 min a game that season so of course his stats aren't going to look that good. Per minute, though, his rookie performance was extremely impressive (especially for an 18 year old). Also, one playoff game doesn't matter. Judge players based on their overall skill level and their entire season performance over the last three seasons relative to their age. Kobe's first two seasons were excellent considering he was 18 and 19. Kobe was definitely an elite prospect coming out of high school. It's just teams foolishly thought picking kids with no college experience was too risky. People definitely saw Kobe as having elite potential.

I played under a coach who was a hard ass but fair in the 70s. Coach Knight was not for everyone but he made sure you went to class and graduated. There is n denying he was a trend setter as a Coach in his philosophy of the game.
Jordan's actual stat line for the whole game and I'm not trolling. You can look it up: Points 20 Rebounds 1 Assists 2 The whole tournament he never had more than 3 assists or 4 rebounds in a game. This story is completely fabricated or somehow Knight confused it with some practice game. This never happened in the 84 Olympics.
I looked up the stats and you are correct. Still makes a great story. Too bad about his temper, he may have been the 2nd or 3rd greatest of all time, John Wooden being first. Maybe Coach K gets 2nd. He learned how to Coach working as an assistant under Knight at IU.

I went to IU in the early 90s. He would give these talks to students for free. Inspirational, funny, motivating. Never used any notes - just spoke off the cuff. He was/is an incredible talent. Hail to old IU!
he had an incredible memory. most lose it by age 60, Knight didn't lose his till the age of 70. He also was an ESPN commentator well into his 60's when most are resting on a beach in Florida sipping on a cocktail trying to remember what they were doing an hour ago.

Coach Knight is missed, cherished, and well respected here in Indiana. My grandparents and dad just thought the world of him. My personalized and autographed ball from Coach is something I will cherish for the rest of my life. Thank u Coach Knight for being an incredible coach in basketball and life. Even when u had to correct some of us middle schoolers at camp. 🙂God bless u Coach.

I went to Bob Knight basketball camp in 1980 when I was 16. Middle of the summer and 95 degrees every day. My HS coach was there too with his two young boys. One day, Bob was giving a talk in the gym and makes an off hand comment something like “if you can find me a better point guard than Isaiah Thomas, it’ll snow a foot tomorrow.”
Later that night at dinner the two boys were insisting their dad find a way to get winter coats. Dad says “it’s 95 degrees out, why in the world would you want winter coats?” They both responded in earnest “Bob Knight said it’s going to snow a foot tomorrow”. I’ve never seen anyone command a room like the general.

It was after the draft but before his first season. Had the draft come after the Olympics the Bulls might not have gotten the pick (at least that what Rod Thorn said)
He implored the Portland GM to draft Jordan with their second overall pick. The GM told Knight he needed a center (he ended up famously drafting ce ter Sam Bowie).
Knight told him to draft Jordan and play him at center.
That's right, I was at Dick Bennett's Basketball camp, asked Coach Bennett How Teri Porter was doing in Olympics tryouts that summer. Teri Porter had the flu and was picked as one of the Olympic alternates. UWSP div.3 , Teri Porter played some good ball for Portland against Jordan's Bulls, some great battles. I was going into my Senior of Highschool, I have never seen anyone play which such intensity as Jordan, and never seen anyone Coach with more intensity than Knight. The Greatest are often not liked..

MJ is still the best modern era player in my lifetime. Larry Bird is up there too. MJ soared when there was no 3 point line and physical hand checking was allowed. Plus his persona off the court speaks for itself.

Knight deserves credit for realizing Jordan's ability in college, but he was the #3 pick in the draft. It's not as if people didn't universally expect him to be an elite perennial all-star type player. He just wasn't seen as an all time great the way Bob saw him.
Kobe Bryant 13th pick. He wasn't even in the all rookie team of that year. Next year he shot 4 airballs at the end of the 4th quarter and overtime in game 5 vs Jazz in the playoffs. Who would have thought he was going to be the best western conference player of all time. Not me.
@@Trancymind the all rookie team doesn't matter. Especially back then before advanced analytics the voters were clueless. He only played 15 min a game that season so of course his stats aren't going to look that good. Per minute, though, his rookie performance was extremely impressive (especially for an 18 year old). Also, one playoff game doesn't matter. Judge players based on their overall skill level and their entire season performance over the last three seasons relative to their age. Kobe's first two seasons were excellent considering he was 18 and 19. Kobe was definitely an elite prospect coming out of high school. It's just teams foolishly thought picking kids with no college experience was too risky. People definitely saw Kobe as having elite potential.

Kevin Garnett had way more elite potential than Kobe believe it or not. Both were drafted out of high school. How many NBA players have won at least 5 NBA championships with at least 1 MVP award picked 13th pick or higher? Nobody.

I played under a coach who was a hard ass but fair in the 70s. Coach Knight was not for everyone but he made sure you went to class and graduated. There is n denying he was a trend setter as a Coach in his philosophy of the game.
