  • I read about this in Model Engineer's Workshop magazine and thought I'd give it a try. Using a Rawlplug De-Speeder in the tailstock of the lathe to tap into mild steel, brass or aluminium. Brilliant. No more broken taps.
    Many thanks to Sleykin who explained that these were designed to allow you to use a power drill to drive in screws when power drills only had one speed.

    info: that thing works really great when the stopping force is not to big so when you are able to grab the De-speeder and hold up against the momentum of the lathe it works but after M12 it gets really hard to get a hold of.
    Thy for sharing this manificent idea =)

      @@Ukenick you video was an inspiration, the Rawlplug does not seem available here in the USA, but a few other brands are, they seem to be 1:7 gear ration, Rigid and Sears [department store] brands...

    I have seen Joe piezinsky use something like this. Think he built his version. But it gave me an idea . Sure would be nice to have something like this for a mill or drillpress. Then it dawned on me, I bet I could setup a small planetary gearset in a similar configuration. The spindle drives the chuck only when the outer gear is held fast. Otherwise it just freewheels through the gears once released

    Think that maneuver could be done on a mill or drill press?

    • @Ukenick
      @Ukenick  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Polk to be honest I am sure it can work in a mill but I would trust a drill press because of the inevitable run off. A lathe and mill are for more accurate
