  • 100k miles in under 20 months riding the new Yamaha Star Venture! When you are living with a progressive and often debilitating disease like MS, every day you can ride is a good day. Longhaulpaul discusses his experiences riding Yamaha's new flagship luxury touring bike after rolling over 6 digits on the odometer. His goal is a million miles or a cure, whichever comes first. Another ridden hard and put away wet review.

    There has been so much in the way of negative comments regarding this touring bike since it was introduced 2 years ago. Paul proves 'em all wrong. Who else has ridden one 100,000 miles? This has been one serious test ride that should remove all doubt as to what this machine is-and is not. Aside from the machine, I think Paul has shown also without a doubt the durability of what a man on a mission is all about. Both man and machine are bulletproof and more than ready for the Longhaul. My mother had MS. I grew up watching her decline by the year. I have a level of appreciation for this rider that goes beyond words. Thanks a million, Paul!

      northerniltree I think the biggest problem was, the people that pre ordered these, didn’t get them when promised, due to a vender not getting Yamaha parts to build them. They refunded a ton of preorders, and people went elsewhere. That really put the s ales behind, you just don’t see many on the road, yet. I put on about 20,000 miles a year on my bikes, and drive semi over the road, and I can honestly say, I have only seen two of these on the road in the last two years. I think they are a good bike, just couldn’t get them out to the public, I don’t agree with today’s time with the air cooled, oil cooled motor. They do throw a lot of heat in warm weather, but a lot of bikes do.

      @@trucker-d4161 I bought one a year ago, and it has performed to my high expectations. The venting that Yamaha engineered into the front lower fairing cowl offers a way to warm or cool your legs depending on the vents being open or closed. I've owned previous Harleys, GoldWings, and a BMW 1600 GTL. Also a Honda FB6. What I've experienced is a comfortable way to ride all day at 75MPH at 2,700 RPM. There is no vibration, but a nice V-Twin feel and sound. Even with ample storage, I had a trailer hitch installed for an air-ride Bushtec trailer- which I use for camping and long distance accommodation. The 4,750 RPM rev limiter is no problem, the massive engine has endless torque. It's like a diesel. The fuel mileage is between 40-48 MPG. The reverse drive is great. My wife loves listening to gospel, I can listen to hard rock. It's great to have a choice with the infotainment system. In stalled traffic when it's humid, windless and 100 degrees, then this, and any bike will get hot. I plan on keeping the bike for some years. I paid 22K for mine a year ago.

    • @trucker-d4161
      @trucker-d4161 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      northerniltree right I get that, but some bikes are by far hotter than others in traffic, had a 15 voyager, that thing was unbearable, very hot, my 16 vision was better, my 16 Goldwing is the best one so far that I’ve had, not that it doesn’t get warm, but tons better than my previous ones. Put 1500 miles on a rented Indian Road Master out west, that was hotter than my GW. Just there was some complaints about heat on the venture, but then again I’ve read reviews on bikes I’ve had experience on, and can’t disagree more on some of their comments. Very subjective, each to his own, I really do like the venture, of all of the Yamaha shops I’ve been to, they have had a hard time selling them. It didn’t help with the initial set back , for the people that pre ordered. Yamaha always made a great motorcycle , I hope to see more on the road!

      @r.i.p2464 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree. Love harley but they cant come close to that mileage without something breaking. I've had evos, twincams. One m8. 11 hds in my garage right now all of them had minor issues and a valve job, one bike is 100k plus, its a twinkie and it had two valve jobs already, magneto replaced, clutch problems, right now its broken and not moving. Im planning to retire the bike and use it as a decoration because i turned it into an awesome bobber before the engine failed. They say harley's edge against other brand is the fit and finish. it was great when i got some of them new or mint used but hey! They didn't last long. Rubber fitting getting loose, plastics worn out specially on my 100k miler. Rust here and there, chromes are in bad condition specially my fatboy. Bought a mint low milage deuce, 30k miles later it looks as bad as my other high milage hd. All of them had some fittings gettin loose, rattles and shit. Oh and the early security system sucks. That one bike with security failure was the most annoying, after a semi short ride, when the bike gets hot, you shut it down and security system activates its almost impossible to deactivate it again. I had to let the bike rest for an hour before i could deactivate the alarms

    Oh my goodness kudos to you. I have ridden for about 30 years and I figured I have ridden about a TOTAL 100000 miles. And you did that in about a year and a half! My last 2 bikes, for the last 15 years were both sportbikes so much fun on racetracks, but I have never ridden much over 300 miles in any one day. That I would love to do once, to tour across maybe 3or 4 states for several days. I know friends who ride large displacement BMW bikes that will go for week and a half trips doing maybe 3 or 4 thousand miles. Your video deserves many more viewers, new riders should watch this video instead of the many less experienced ( sometimes younger) riders that are more about bloating their egos, and telling you what you want and or need rather than just explaining with facts and knowledge the way you do. I have spent MANY hours watching various motorcycle videos, and yours so far is as good as the Pinnacle of motorcycle videos, a company from I believe Canada called fortnine. If you want to catch a excellent and well produced bike video, watch " how Harley Davidson killed itself" . Ride safe. Thank you.

      Mine was my ever, first V-Twin. I had always owned multi cylinder in line four's, or Goldwings. I wanted to try a V-Twin experience, but did not want to purchase a Harley or Indian. So, how did it go? Well, if this bike had come out four Goldwings ago....I'd probably still be on it...like Paul...coming up to and over 100,000 miles. This bike is so great, I just don't see ever replacing it, other than keep doing maintenance, or if there was ever a catastrophic breakdown. By what Paul is showing here...that seems to have as much chance, as my winning the Power Ball. So...no further concern there...lol.
      Humor aside, buying the 2018 STVC turned out in hindsight, to be a wonderful ownership experience. Smooth as a baby's bum, tons of tour-storage room, the wife, very happy behind me, talking to whomever she wants on private or invites-me-in Cell calls, loves her ability to control her OWN music sources and volumes...(SHE LOVES THIS!), and the only bike that has that feature...not Goldwings...not Harleys, not Indians...not BMW....nobody by Yamaha's Star Venture Trans Continental....and for that, I don't think my wife WOULD LET ME, sell the bike...maybe trade in for a newer SVTC...but not to another ride from anybody else. Oh, did I mention her loving the heated seats from mid-back, down to that cute back-side of hers. I owned various production year Goldwings in the high $20,000.00's that never ever offered that feature...heat from shoulder blades down to your knees. This bike has absolutely everything a single tour, or tour couple could ask for, for comfort and entertainment integration. Nothing was left out, not even a 12 V plug for if you have heated vests or pants/jackets.

    And people think I'm crazy for some of the weather I've ridden in! Heck, if it snowed where I live (Mobile, AL) I'd have to think twice about even driving anywhere in my van! I grew up in northern Indiana, but it's been over 20 years since I've had to commute in snow on a regular basis. Sorry to hear you're leaving the Venture for something else. I've had my Eluder now for 22 months but only have 20,000 miles on it (3 months it sat at the dealership awaiting parts/repairs after being hit in a parking lot). Like you, I have no complaints about reliability, comfort, or ergonomics - I did add Rox 2" Risers for a bit more pullback on the bars. My only real gripe is that even with the Medium (fixed) windshield I still get a fair amount of helmet buffeting at highway speeds, and preferring to wear a 1/2 helmet I don't get nearly as much protection from rain/road debris so I'm forced to wear a 3/4 or full-face when I know I'm going to be in poor weather for any length of time. I like and have always liked the Venture since it came out in ‘18. I test rode one in Daytona for Bike Week and planned on buying one. I couldn’t find one when I got back home to TN. I have no idea why they’re so hard to find in Middle TN. I gave up and traded to a Harley again. I like my bike and will stick with it for a few years, but I have nothing but good to say about the Venture.

    Paul, best of luck reaching a cure. Hope to see you around Detroit sometime. I am fortunate not to be dealing with an illness and for obvious different reasons than yours I like to ride in weather most road riders do not venture. My threshold is 35F to 95F. I can take rain and sweat. Had not tried snow yet but would not say it is out of the question. It might happen sometime. Anyhow, I was interested on this flagship and I am glad to listen to an honest review from someone that can certainly (with your large experience) ping point the pro/con of it. Jerry Paladino has a review which is somehow favorable and am starting to look into it as a next bike option. Always dreamed with owning a Goldwing, considering continue to stay with BMW but now I ser this one has some serious potential.

    Unless the Yamaha engineers rode the SV around Nürburgring 6,200 times, no other rider has come close to the 100k mark. Good for you, Brother. If that Tene700 doesn't work out, just bang a uey back to the SV. You da man.

    Nice to hear a review that goes beyond the pi**ing and moaning about heat abatement issues by a rider who knows his s**t, I've been a Road King guy for years. Goodbye, HD - this is my next bike. How does this compare to a Gold Wing? Great, confidence-inspiring review. Thanks - loved this! What an inspiration you are!

    Funny stuff: When I was a London dispatch rider I had many bikes, two of which were Honda CX500’s, on both rode them for 100,000 miles ..then have the engine rebuild, ride another 100,000 miles then out it....same with the next one and both ridden flat out all the time, knee sliding, wheelies and even power sliding....given that the bike is far enough over😉

    Excellent review Paul! I can only guess at how ecstatic Yamaha was to get a legitimate long distance, long time, test on their engineering. They can't possibly duplicate your usage results by having engineers ride a new design for only a few miles! Awesome field test!

      And how many quarts of oil did that 105k take ? HD is a status symbol bike, not the best touring option. Paul is right on vibration, torque, factory stereo, SVTC cant be beat. Not for 46k for a comparable HD ... just 26k for the yami. Do a lot of accessories and riding for 20k.

    You think it's quick and fast? Evedently you have never rode a first gen Venture. They would run circles around this one and that technology is from 35 years ago. Kudos to you for riding that much in that short of time! YOU DA MAN!!

    I have one, it's at about 26K miles. Only real complaints is the lack of a trunk light, (that I fixed for less than $40), the lack of being able to connect a BT helmet without a third party device, and the mirrors. I'm 6'2" and the mirrors give me a terrific view of my elbows. Otherwise I have loved the bike. My mixed fuel econ runs at around 31 mpg half the time towing a mini mate and half not.

    We met at Daytona bike week a few years ago. I was touring North America on my ducati multistrada enduro 1200. You told me how great the tenere and that new cruiser were . I almost traded it in but didn’t. That was a giant mistake. My ducati needed an engine rebuild at 25,000 miles.. after that it broke down every time I tried to ride it. I’ve only been able to ride it 3 weeks out of the last 12 months due to time in the shop .
    Ducati has spent $11,000 in repairs so far. Can’t believe you kept going and my trip was ruined because I bought a Ducati . It destroyed my trip of a lifetime. Next time I’m getting a yamaha . Based on the miles you put on all your Yamahas I know I’ll be able to actually ride it . I had planned an amazing tour but instead only got about 60 percent through it.. after the last repair I tried to do a the iron butt ride to support you but the bike broke down 500 miles into the ride. It took me 6 days to finish the ride limping it home between breakdowns. And yes it was a brand new ducati.
    best wishes to you and your cause.

    Thanks for this great video. I currently have a 2011 Victory Cross Country with 70k miles and I'm thinking about the SVTC. I love the XC but parts support is getting sketchy.
