    A small detail that I don't see get a lot of mention is that Batman almost always refers to Killer Croc with his birth name, Weylon Jones, while most other characters just calls him Croc or "it". No matter how mutated Croc becomes over the games, Batman still sees him as a person, as a human being.

      It’s a tactic used to try to potentially convince villains to turn over a new leaf. Thats why he always calls Two-Face Harvey, etc. Of course he can’t do this with the Joker because nobody really knows his true identity.

    Heres a fun fact about the "live-action" trailers:
    Here in my country, Hungary, when the AC cinematic trailer came out, a morning show actually believed it to be the trailer for the next Nolan Batman movie, and had a film critic on who talked for like 10 minutes about what he thought about it.
    It was only after the segment aired that they realized its a CG video game trailer.

      To give some context in english: Film critic comes in, and basically starts talking in general about how much he hates the batman movies, claims the comics were all like Adam West Batman, so the new movies aren't even faithful, says Heath Ledger's Joker is the only reason the movies are popular. He basically plays the part of the typical contrarian snobby movie critic.
      The hosts ask who he thinks the villain will be, and who will play that villain, which is very weird considering they already saw a trailer, as far as they are aware atleast...
      They also ask the critic if he prepared for the interviews by watching TDK or Batman Begins. He says no. Maybe if he did he would have noticed the trailer isn't related...

      in fact , im pretty sure Batman CAN and DID exist without joker, however, joker on the other hand, might not and he projects that dependency onto batman.
      Only if you use the term joker to describe all villiany, but at that point, he still has two face and penguin and black mask and the rest of the lot to direct his crusade at. While joker, joker NEEDS Batman as that ineffable symbol of stalwartness to try and break. if batman was gone, there would be noone worth testing for joker, But Batman obsession is more abstract and replaceable.

    *Fun Fact about Calander Man's "There are your beginning. Be there at your end" line:* In Batman Arkham Origins in an early cutscene, right before 'Black Mask' puts Commissioner Leob in the execution chamber, Calander Man walks out of it because he was supposed to be excecuted on that night. While this isn't technically Batman's beginning, it is the earliest we see Batman in the Arkhamverse, and Calander Man was there. I just think that little easter egg is a nice nod to what Calander Man said in Arkham City. It's neat.

      honestly the Matter of Family is super eerie in terms of story and ambience by the setting, especially after hearing the last audio tape in his room and seeing his lifeless skeleton in his bed (hinting at the achievement all Snug in Their Beds). I Think its one of the storylines and setting that is heavily overlooked and slept on (pun intended). Not to mention that Starro EE. If the Arkham games are good at something its definitely ambience, it makes you feel something being alone in something that is abandoned (like Wonder city, Langstrom's lab, Riddler's hideout in AK, Etc.) and that alone is powerful.

    • @jasonx1174
      @jasonx1174 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @A-gonzalez-2228 having just finished all the Arkham games recently I can definitely say the ambiance of the creepy parts of the games is definitely great. Always felt unnerved whenever I was in areas like you mentioned because those places once had life in them and to see said life reduced when going through those places was just very ominous.

  • @comicfan1324
    @comicfan1324 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1580

    Personally I think the reason Bruce and Alfred were so somber at the end is because literally no one can know that they were live apart from each other. Neither of them will ever see Dick, Tim, Barbara, Gordon, Selena, or even Jason (who they recently discovered was still alive) ever again. Not to mention that part of the plan is essentially burning down Wayne Manor, The place that was their home and where the young Master Bruce was raised.
    There’s also a very rare interaction between Batman and Penguin that you only see if you arrest the crime boss after Bruce is revealed to be the Batman. Penguin makes fun of how no one will be afraid of him after tonight and jokingly asks how he plans on what costume he’ll try using to scare criminals now. Batman silently but almost smugly replies “You’ll see.” Which bear in mind Batman only says this after he’s already decided that he hast to initialize the Knightfall Protocol. So I believe this is foreshadowing that Batman will continue to protect the city and be using fear toxin in the near future to scare criminals even after his public death.

    • @GodsRighthandman
      @GodsRighthandman ปีที่แล้ว

      that’s a reallly good point. he probably does use the toxin!

    • @Gabriel-oq8gs
      @Gabriel-oq8gs ปีที่แล้ว +167

      I think that solemn conversation might also have to do with the fact that both he and Alfred know that after initiating Knightfall, he can't be Bruce Wayne anymore...Let me explain: It's been noted at several points before that "Bruce Wayne", the carefree, happy playboy billionaire is just an act, and Bruce's TRUE personality is "Batman", the angry, brooding and broken man. I mean, with everything that he went through, why wouldn't he be that way? But while the balance between those two lives is unsteady at best, he still maintains it.
      So when Bruce's identity is found out, he knows that he can't have that double life anymore. He can't be both Batman and Bruce Wayne. By blowing up Wayne Manor, he's effectively "killing" the part of his life that is Bruce Wayne. But now with Bruce Wayne "dead" in everyone's eyes, he's completely isolated from society and can focus the entirety of his time, energy, and life on punishing criminals. On top of using fear toxin, what we see at the end might be Batman in his purest form: a dark force of nature that's only concerned with punishing the scum of Gotham, completely separated from the human side that was holding him back.

    • @potatoboy6094
      @potatoboy6094 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      The idea of fear toxin Batman is badass, but considering the somber aspects of it as well as the many supernatural aspects within the series, I think it would be metal AF If it was MORE than just a new costume and some fear toxin, the devs leave it up to interpretation, so there isn’t any proof, but I do think it would be cool if Bruce LITERALLY mutates himself or uses some sort of otherworldly power to become a reality warping bat demon. As said in the video, knightfall seems to be the worst case scenario, the human aspect of the Batman dies, and he begins to fully embody a force of unstoppable vengeance. I don’t even want to theorize much further on the differences, I think it’s cooler if his plans, method, morality, and tactics are as much a mystery to us as they are to everyone else. Batman is dead, and something FAR WORSE has taken his place.

    Harley's Non-Pregnancy has a pretty simple answer that is solely behind-the-scenes.
    Asylum and City were written by Paul Dini, but after the release of City, Rocksteady chose to use in-house writers as opposed to bringing in "outsiders" like Paul. This meant a new team wrote the story for Harley Quinns Revenge as well as Arkham Knight. Harley being pregnant was a story element that Dini was planning to expand upon in a (at the time hypothetical) 3rd game in the series, but Rocksteady/the new writers weren't invested in that particular plot thread, so they used the Arkham City DLC as a means to essentially retcon it with "The test was a false positive and the baby Harley was singing to in the credits of Newgame+ was just Scarface painted to look like a Baby Joker".
    It's also very likely the reason the cliffhangers in City for Hush, Azrael and Calendar Man had no real impact on the story of Knight. They were probably story elements Dini was once again likely intending to follow up on in the next game, while the new writing team just wasn't interested in using these threads. However, in this case they knew they couldn't just leave these unaddressed in Knight, so Hush and Azrael were still included as (brief and underwhelming) side missions that don't have any influence on the game, while Calendar Man gets a blink and you'll miss it cameo during the final cutscene.

    • @jrugi3723
      @jrugi3723 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Dini had no inclusion in knight whatsoever?

    • @missesprocastinating8991
      @missesprocastinating8991 ปีที่แล้ว +146

      There's also a canonical explanation. The Joker physically can't have kids due to his body being exposed to massive chemicals. This has been brought up in older comics (and much darker comics). Harley has been shown in both the Batman: Animated Series and in independent works as well to be obsessed with the idea of starting a family with Joker. So, canonically speaking, Harley Quinn got a false positive amongst a million negatives and obsessed over it, thinking this was finally her chance to start a family. After the Joker dies, she becomes even more obsessed with the hope of carrying his baby, an obsession that carries over into Arkham Knight when she finds out there are multiple "mini jokers" so to speak.

      While I loved to what Paul and the rest of the original writers would come up for third Arkham game, I’m with rocksteady on caning the pregnant Harley subplot. Personally I don’t find it interesting and from what I could imagine of a story that goes down that route, it doesn’t look that good. Plus a part of me thinks that it possible this has nothing to do with Paul and the writers always intended for it to be a red herring and that people were desperate to find something that may have be hint to the original plan for Arkham knight and just choose this for some reason. But then again, that just my two cents on it.

    • @thegrapethief5514

      I have sort of an idea on what I think could happen in the Suicide Squad game since we already know Batman is in it (check out Batman Arkham Videos’ breakdown of the trailer). It’s almost guaranteed that he’ll be in the game as a boss fight of some kind, but with Batman being Batman, I doubt he hasn’t planned for this, so it’s unlikely Brainiac got him as well. It’s likely that, in order to defeat the corrupted Justice League members, part of the game will revolve around gathering Batman’s plans for fighting and defeating every JL member. If Brainiac has gotten him, then it’s likely we’ll just see him as a boss when they go after those. If he hasn’t, then I have a much more interesting theory: Batman defeats Brainiac, or helps the Suicide Squad defeat him, but then plans to use Brainiac’s ship to mind control the planet and make them forget Bruce Wayne is Batman, so he can recapture the fear he used to instill in criminals. Then Batman, controlling Brainiac’s ship or otherwise, is the real final boss of the game. This is all just speculation but if this turns out to be true it would be awesome.

  • @KnerdYT
    @KnerdYT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +309

    The theory at 1:27:54 seems to have a few plot holes in it at first glance, but some Arkham players, including myself, have brainstormed ideas to try and make this theory valid. So here I am to defend this theory. In Arkham City, Batman only takes half a dose of the cure, saving the other half for Joker. Since he didn't take the entire dose, he's still slightly infected, but not enough to experience any major mental or physical changes. Joker did make some small appearances and moderately influenced Batman, but it was nothing extremely serious like losing control of his mind. After experiencing these symptoms, this was when Batman thought that he could turn into the Joker at any point in time. These symptoms were probably the worst thing that Batman would have experienced given that he was mostly cured of the Joker's blood already, but he was still paranoid. This paranoia turned into his greatest fear. We all know that fear toxin targets a person's worst fears and makes them come to life. After he inhaled some of the fear toxin, this fear was what caused the Joker to become much more than a whispering voice in Batman's head, multiple times trying to and coming quite close to successfully taking over Batman's mind.
    Yes, technically Batman is still infected even though the theory is all about Batman NOT being infected, but the main point still stands - the main cause of Batman turning into the Joker was because of his fears coming to life as a result of inhaling fear toxin, not because of being infected with Joker's blood. His slight infection played a part in developing this fear, but not in taking over Batman.
    Now look I don't know much about the science behind this stuff other than what I learned in school, so I could very well be wrong. There might also be other plot holes to this theory as well, making me completely incorrect. I'm just trying to find ways to justify this theory.

    19:19 it's pretty clear. In the begining of Knight, it's explained that the only ones left in the city are thugs who stayed or came to riot and loot. Meaning when the gas was released, every thug in Gotham was either killed or received enough of it to have the long lasting side effects of hallucinations. The more symbolic meaning of this is that even though batman is dead, the idea of Gotham's protector still lives on not only in the hearts of it's citizens, but in the minds of it's criminals.

    He mentioned to Seline that Gotham needed a new legend. Also, when Crane is injected with his own toxin, the Batman he sees looks oddly similar to the one those thugs witness at the end. That’s my interpretation. Bruce “died” then after some time, developed a new way to defend Gotham using something more terrifying than Batman. Seems like the more logical approach to me. Nothing in game shows that a member of the Bat-Family would take the mantle. And Bruce actually killing himself and Alfred is just not gonna happen. It’s similar to the TDKR comic where he fakes his death at the end.

    Actually, I read something completely different from the Harley pregnancy tests. In Arkham Asylum, she tries this big flying kick that Batman easily stops by throwing her to the floor. He does the same thing in Arkham City when you first meet her at the church. Since the pregnancy test is there from the earliest point you can enter that room, I theorize that she had the positive pregnancy test before the church encounter. The fact that all the negative pregnancy tests can only be found after completing the game, I put it together that she *was* pregnant, but lost the baby. If I’m right, that means in a way Batman caused her pregnancy to fail by doing the same defense he’s probably done countless times.

In all other Arkham games, the Batman Beyond suit appears as it was in the animated show, except in AK, where it's more robotic and realistic, and has many similar characteristics to the Demon Batman ( red eyes, red bat symbol, boosters at the feet that gives the feeling he's levitating from the ground, biggest exception being the lack of a cape in said suit )

    A metaphor if you will about how he "put the fear into a criminal heart" enough to stop the same thing that happend to him from happening to others.

    My personal theory for the pregnancy thing is that it was a false positive, but she believed it to be real and that she miscarried. My reasoning for this is that they wouldn't include that on the box if we weren't supposed to take it at face value, and very early in the game there's a brief moment where Harley is worried about the safety of her baby. Kind of a blink and you'll miss it moment, but when you throw her in the church, as soon as she hits the ground she places her hand on her stomach almost like she was worried. My personal theory is there never was a baby, but that moment of her being injured prompted her to take new tests because she feared she miscarried. Tests came up negative, she snapped because Batman "killed Joker AND their child," and that's what prompted the bit about stealing Scarface, painting him like Joker and treating him like a baby
    31:38 Also! Not so fun fact! A pretty gross one actually! In the comics the two are VERY sexually active and there's a very high chance it's one of the only things he kept her around for. I don't recall the name of the story in question but there is even a story arc in which Joker deliberately tries to knock up Harley so he had an "heir." She wasn't cool with it, though. If anyone remembers when that took place I'd really appreciate it.

    The Knightfall protocol: I believe that Bruce hung up the cape and left Gotham along with Alfred. He had eliminated all the major crimes and established a legend that would protect Gotham in his absence and if any crime bosses do show up he has got a gang ready for them. It's similar to Christopher Nolan's Trilogy.
    The spooky batman is because of Scarecrow's toxin. As all the criminals were not evacuated and inhaled the fear toxin during the Cloudburst arc they were scared of Batman and that's what will keep all the criminals from any crimes. The stories of such criminals will ward off others and Batman will truly become a myth. Always unseen and ever-present.

Once his identity was revealed, they saw him as a normal human, but the fear of the Batman never left. For criminals, it will always be in the back of their head, a ''what if?'' When they see a Batman-like figure on the rooftop, they act tough just like any other NPC did in the game, but imagine believing the Batman is dead and you suddenly see a Batman-like figure on a rooftop glaring at you. I'd be scared as hell, which makes the fear toxin even more effective.

    My personal theory for what the Knightfall ending is, is that it's not actually Batman we see at the end. Throughout the game, if you spend enough time just flying around, listening to NPC dialogue, you can hear them talk about what happened after the Cloudburst was activated and Ivy cleaned up the toxin. Some Thugs and Militia members will talk about the fear toxin and how it affected them, and they will talk about how even though the toxin is gone and the city has gone back to normal, the toxin's effects never really go away. What this means is that it could be years down the line, and people are still experiencing the effects of the toxin. We also know that Azrael is put in line to be the heir to the cowl. I believe that this is Azrael, and because of the effects of the fear toxin, just the sight of Batman sends criminal's into fear-fueled PTSD psychosis.

    • @assassinmaster3419
      @assassinmaster3419 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      The Azrael that takes up the mantle was a different person, also after all that mess was cleaned up Dick put on the cowl during Prodigy while Bruce went on to tie up loose ends and continue his recovery after the Knightfall, Kights Quest, Knights End. Not unlike the Court of Owl the order of St. Dumas always has someone fulfilling the role of Azrael. Most likely it is Bruce operating “beyond the grace” or Dick taking up the role.

    Ivy "living" throgh her plants is totally something that could happen and has precedents in the comics, also, I don't think it undermines her sacrifice as even if she does come back it will take a long time and won't erase the pain as suffering she went through.

    Another piece of evidence that batman actually was infected with the joker is that both Henry Adams and Tim Drake were able to see it- which was the reason why Henry shot himself, and that Tim locked batman in the cell. They could physically see his symptoms.

    I’m surprised nobody talks about the big hidden Cyrus Gold quest from Arkham Origins. I stayed on that mystery for something like a year before finding all the clues and getting the conclusion in a secret room that I always found locked before and it solved the mystery of the last biography character that was missing in the game.

      I gotta say, the collectibles in AO are the worst, as (if I recall correctly) there are no in-game maps for the Anarchy signs or the Cyrus Gold things, so besides the ones I find accidentaly, I've yet to finish collecting them all.

    • @cjmania1980
      @cjmania1980 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@kacpernowak1535 for the anarchy signs, I would say, they should’ve done something like find them like the riddler mysteries (not the trophies)from asylum and city, but they should’ve put it on the map as you said.
      For Cyrus Gold, I really like the idea to make it a hidden case, but again, they should have done some kind of riddles that the player should think about to find the next spot, like the black dallia murderer from LA Noire. You’re right when you say that we can only find it randomly, but I like the core idea tbh.

    This video gave me nostalgia for the Arkham games. While the Arkham games weren't the first games I've ever played, they were the first games that really got me into gaming, or rather more importantly, they were the first games that got me into single player games with a story to them. They made my childhood, and without them I highly doubt I would be the video game lover that I am today. So thanks for this video ClownPuncher139, Imma go and replay this amazing series soon.

    I have a theory about the 425 thing. Assuming the Wayne Manor map is just a Augmented Reality training exercise and therefore canon to the game, Cell 425 would be the first sign of Batman being tainted with Joker's blood. And he started having that nightmare of ending up in Cell 425 over and over again.

    This has become my favorite iceberg video, mostly because its about my entry into “adult” gaming (AA was the highest rated game my parents let me play for a while and i had no clue AC existed for like 4 years) but it was also interesting as hell to listen to while listening to my homework. Great video will be checking out your channel more in the future.

    Awesome video. Even for me, who has been an avid fan of the series for nearly a decade and knew the majority of this stuff, this was extremely interesting. Not to mention incredibly well made.
    There are two things I would like to bring up though.
    1) The "Talia's missing body" thing is actually refering to an easter egg in Knight. In the morgue, which is the new hideout for the League of Assassins, you can find several dead bodies of people from the diner in the AK opening. Next to them is a case labeled "Talia" with no body inside, alluding to the possibility of Talia being alive. This is further supported by the interview tape you unlock after completing all of the Season of Infamy missions, in which iirc Ras' leaves a message specifically for Talia.
    2) The scarecrow thugs during Protocol 10 are nowhere to be found in the Return to Arkham version, meaning it was most likely just a glitch in the vanilla one.

    My favourite theory for the whole Harley pregnancy thing is that Batman kills the baby. t the start of the game Batman throws Harley on the ground and she lands on her stomach, this theory states that the positive pregnancy test in the base game is a true positive and she was in the early stages of pregnancy. Then Batman throws her on the ground disrupting the embryo and causing a miscarriage. Harley then keeps trying pregnancy tests hoping the baby is still alive but after a while she gives up and puts scar face and the positive pregnancy test in the crib as a way of coping.

      @dragonlord1935 2 ปีที่แล้ว +137

      This is actually a very sad and very plausible theory except for one big problem. If Batman was really responsible for the baby's death then Harley would have beaten him over the head with it for forever and a day. Repeatedly mocking him for killing both her "husband" Joker and her child. It just doesn't make sense for Harley to just quietly put it aside and not weaponize it against Batman in her quest for vengeance. It doesn't work with her character.

      @@dragonlord1935 Yeah because he's breaking his one rule and an unborn baby at that. Both Joker pre-death and Harley would mock and berate the living shit out of him. It would also be something that would need a response from him he'd figure it out and have true guilt.

    In Origins, Penguin's pre-recorded message explaining the history of the Final Offer states that the ship was originally christened the Olivia B. Meredith, which must be a reference to Burgess Meredith, who played Penguin in the 60's TV series.

    I'd like to add that during the Crime Alley Investigation in Origins, there are a few split moments during the murder reconstruction where you can see the bodies of Thomas and Martha Wayne on top of the white silhouette on the ground. You can see this moment once towards the end of the crime reconstruction. I tried a couple more times after the initial attempt I noticed this but it does not show. I haven't tried restarting it yet to see if it works, but there are videos on TH-cam showing this.
