You are right as usual, for someone just getting into knives there is no better place to come than MC. I never weigh or measure what I carry. The most important thing I consider is like you said, carry what brings you joy. And I can't believe there are people who would only watch part of one of your endeavors.....how rude!!😮

My preferred length is 3.25, because I find 3 a little small and 3.5 a little big. Only problem is that a lot of knives skip over that and are either 3 or 3.5. that being said I would still carry anything from 2-4 inches. I also like how you say if we were being honest with ourselves we'd carry a victorinox, because that's completely true. That's why it's so hard to argue why I need an expensive knife because technically I could do everything I need it to do with a cheap Swiss army knife......

  • @rickkerans8485
    @rickkerans8485 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I prefer 4 inch blades can go down to 3.25 but then usually the handle becomes too small. I agree are most of the knives I enjoy carrying too much for the use. Yes and I am not saying that apologetically. I enjoy larger knives with some weight. I wish I could find a Goliath to see how it carried. Probably way to big and heavy but if I get one and I like it so what. I will never tell anyone what they should be carrying as long as they like it. It is a personal thing as far as I am concerned. If you like the knife and enjoy carrying it by all means do it. Have a great night stay safe and your blades sharp.

I normally carry a 2.5-3" knife due to rules at work and up to 3.5" when not at work. I tend to like the longer blades when I know I have some food prep to do. Much easier to cut an apple with a little longer blade.

2.9-3.4ish for edc for me. I always have a leatherman squirt on my keychain as well. I tend to carry more knives just shy of 3" knives more often just because I spend about half my time in an area with silly laws though.

Baaaaasically I just go by "carry whatever ya damn well want" and am glad you think the same. For me, that's a 3.4-4" blade, but it's just a preference and not based on requirements of regularly-performed tasks.

I have XXL sized hands, and this plays a big part in my choices. Minimum blade length (and corresponding handle length) for me is 3.25", and I have found I have gravitated towards 4" these days. Weight is mostly irrelevant and usually doesn't come into play for me.

  • @erhon5

I prefer somewhere in the 3-3.25 range but as long as it fits in my pocket I am not too picky. Sometimes 3.5 is a bit too big due to dumb girl pockets.

  • @DeusEstPrimus

    Metal Complex,
For me, a 4 inch blade is ideal. I do not carry blades longer than 4 inches. I don’t want to sound crude but I am fairly pragmatic. I want my EDC to do 2 things adequately. Both of those things is emergencies and defense. 4 inches is small enough to carry well and perform a emergency type task, but large enough to hit vital organs ( God forbid it ever comes to that, If it has, many things have gone wrong). I apologize, I don’t mean to offend anyone but the world is a violent place. I also believe though, that carrying weapons means a life long commitment to deterrence, avoidance, and de-escalation.
Keep in mind I am a general aviation pilot. I often fly over miles of open country and precautionary landings in the wilderness are not unheard of.

The problem is that the knife community and knife enthusiasts do not determine, or seem to have any say at all, in what is deemed an acceptable blade length. For some reason explicable only as hubris, the acceptable knife length is determined by municipal, county, and state governments. For me the best blade length is the one that won't get me arrested and that depends on where I am likely to go on any day in order to navigate the maze of towns and cities that have a under 3", 3", and 3.5" limits.

I carry 3-in to 3 and 1/2-in everyday I had a couple of 4-in blades but I recently sold them because I never seem to carry them although I really like them. Where I live in Florida 4-in is legal but for me it's kind of too close 3 and 1/2-in is my max now and it has a comfortable handle and big enough blade for utility and self-defense and the same with a 3-in knife.

My blade length minimum is 3.4 inches. I have large hands and smaller knives under that size just don't work for me. I will go up to 5 inches, but normally cut it off at 4 inches. If a smaller knife has a good usable choil I may want to try it. I also carry a Leatherman Micra as a mini tool.

There are few criteria a knife has to meet to be a good EDC for me. As i see EDC knives as the only tools you are left with in a case of emergency. In any other case you can find a proper knife for a job.
Imagine yourself in a "Lost" type of situation )) when you suddenly find yourself in a situation when you have access to the only knife you managed to get into your luggage and planned to carry it. The main usage is obviously food prep so it has to be
    1) A good slicer. No effin tantos, espadas and other ridiculous staff.
    2) Has to be super rust resistant. So no K390 or D2.
    3) Has to be maintained easily, so less parts - less maintenance. Ball bearings are a no
    4) Has to be sharpened relatively easy and toughness comes before edge retention.
    5) The lock has to be simple and tough with minimum moving parts. So no to Axis lock as well.
In the end, keeping in mind all the criteria i mentioned, the only knives that fit are Spyderco Salt series. Unfortunately no one's making something like the Salt series at lower price.

  • @jeffsmith6441

I totally agree. I haven't been a "knife guy" too long but when I first got interested I would listen to other people's opinion to decide what was the right knife to carry. I quickly learned that I have to get a knife that is best suited for what I use them for. Even then it's Overkill but like you said, it's just fun. I carry big blades just because I can. It's fun and if I ever do need it, it's there. I just think everything about knives are fun so I carry whatever I feel like carrying regardless of weight or size or anything. It all comes down to what I want that day. Thanks for the awesome video!

I Love Big Blades. I carry for edc and self-defense , so the longer the better. But I also carry a small knife for several reasons, first - in case I need to cut something in a highly populated public place , the sheople get really nervous if you whip out a Big Blade, second - if someone needs to borrow a knife to cut something, these people, from experience, will destroy a good knife on you , they will pry , drop , and even scrape things with the cutting edge , you can not trust anyone with a good knife .

I have carried a Barlow and a Buck 110 for many many years. I now switch the 110 out for an Ontario R1D2 or a Spyderco Para 3. The Barlow's usually see more use than the larger blades throughout the day on average. This setup has worked well for me for 30+ years.

EDC... A friggin katana! Hells yeah! It slices, It dices and envelopes don't stand a chance! Got road rage? Pull along side and whack an arm off... It'll reach!
Actually, I have several EDC and the last 6 months I've been using a 3.3" blade Kizer PPY with 154mcm steel. It slices, It dices, Envelopes shake in fear when they see it. I also use it camping 2 weekends a month carving whittle sticks through knots, cordage, food prep etc. I have a bruiser with a full tang for "rough" (hulk SMASSSSH!) activities such as splitting trees into kindling and chasing bear in the woods when intoxicated (I should get a friggin katana for that sh*t, eh?)
It's replaced a Spyderco delica with the 2.6" blade in s30v. Sits better in the pocket, doesn't scare those who see it, feels better in my hand and it's slightly tougher so I can take it camping and fishing and (not bear hunting...Fk that sh*t!) not worry about it chipping on a knot.
Whatever works for YOU is the best EDC, Katana or victorinox...it's all good!

Hey there MC! Props for being honest about exactly what your main uses for knives are. I think some people really DO look down on others who are mainly light duty users because we are not testing the limits of how our knives can perform. Well, I- like you- don't NEED to test out every knife to its maximum stress levels during daily light use (and thank God for that cos I reckon the knives most of us EDC would take a hell of a lickin and keep on tickin). If you want to make sure you put every knife through extreme testing then that's great too, just make sure you film it cos I love watching those 'hard use' video clips too..in summary- live and let live. FREEEDOOM!!

When I’m at work and I’m going to be carrying long hours I tend to carry a smaller blade like the para3 light weight but if I’m going out to eat dinner or going out on the town with the wife I tend to carry a larger knife. That being said, my backup knife, the one I always have on me regardless of what I’m doing and therefore my true edc, is a 2.9in slipjoint, because I know it fits in my 5th pocket and can be carried everywhere.

i carry what i want...lol i have many blades of varying lengths, but only carry some to work (under 3.5 inches). PM2s, zt 0470, Manix 2. not at work ill carry my Amalgam or my AD-10, Natrix XL...you know, big folders. i find at work (electrician) a big blade is not necesarry. smaller is easier to control while stripping cable, so i carry my Para 3 a lot, which makes quick work of cable with that pointy tip! a ZT 0770 also fits that bill, because of the blade design. Ive used my Manix 2 for it as well, but its a little unwieldy sometimes...works great on bigger cables though.
generally like things around 3.5 inches though. i guess thats why my PM2s get carried so much. perfect size! and good weight.

If you use your knife for work AND self defense application like moi, then Id recommend not getting a knife with a smaller blade length of 2.5in As 2 inches is necessary for a lethal attack. But I also don't recommend a blade length larger than 4in not simply because of the size but the WEIGHT of the knife might to start to get a bit too much. I had an all metal EMS knife and gave it to my mom and she never carried it cause it was too heavy. ( shes got a better knife now lol)

I've also three times deployed my knife is self defense off the sled. Once walking into someones yard that had a loose German sheppard. Second time my wife screamed get out here,..I looked outside to see two young German malnois having my dog pinned to the ground,...I was wearing a neck knife and I ran out screaming with knife in hand,..fortunately they left!!!! Third time I was at the vet with my dog and got pinned to a wall by a seriously big purebred pitbull,..I deployed my folder and at the same time the owner grabbed his dogs leash and I was spared a bloody fight. So how would most of you feel if you were out with your wife at night and your car broke down in a bad area,...how safe would you feel now with you swiss army knife as your only weapon,.... tell me my friend's how good would YOU have faired with your ridiculous swiss army knife in any one of those situations????
I carry a S&W. Bodyguard,...a ESEE Xancudo fixie,....a Zero Tolerance 0770 carbon fiber folder and mace and i still feel under armed!!
Maybe if you live in Kansas you'd feel safe with the swiss army knife,..but i would NOT!!!

I notice you use two hands when closing the Microtech Socom Elite. I'm been practicing a one handed closure, but don't think I would when in actual field use conditions. Do you use the Microtech Socom Elite in the field? As for blade length, it really depends upon the tasks even for EDC. I was using a Benchmade mini Griptillian and while great for many tasks, but the 2-3/4" blade came up short. Pun intended. In woodcarving that's even more important to fit length to the task. In making a shrink pot a 3-3/4"-4" blade works quite well. I still have a love the older slip joint knives like the stockmen that has thee blades A clip-2-3/4" max, a wharnecliffe/sheepfoot at 2+" and a shorter (1-1/4" or so) pen blade. Now to find one in carbon steel of S30V. Knife makers are slow to change steels when you can cheaply change scales.:-(

For my hand size, 2.9-3" for knives with a good finger choil (think Para 3/Native 5/Sage), 3.3-3.4" for knives without one.
It's actually that 3-3.3" range that can be awkward, depending on the handle. For example, I love the look of the ZT 460, but even with smaller than average hands, it doesn't work for me. The larger (and "murder-y") 462 fits my hand like a glove.

So then go for a 97+ socom way lighter I think just as strong. 06+ is amazing and 2012+(but on ball bearing) is even lighter very slim probably as strong and cuts like a demon. Blades are ground better I think not tank like and just a legit tool. I found microtech ball bearings are a different animal no oil and they don't jam or get gritty. Stuff my cold steels jam on on a daily basis my doc just keeps going

Some of us have to consider self defense depending on where we work etc., so a longer blade is preferred. Plus it comes in handy for cutting up lunch. Big blades can do small blade jobs but not vice versa. If I could I'd carry the Cold Steel Espada lol. But laws vary state to state and some states suck as far as the right to defend yourself so...

I would rather just carry a 3" blade at most; I never need a huge knife and bigger just gets attention.

      2 things stopping me:
      1. I cant stop talking.
      2. People would say I was just uploading for the midroll.
      😊

I agree 3 to 3 1/2 inch is a good for EDC in most cases. I prefer lager blades but they are not allways practical to carry.Still love big blades because I like them.I have more then one knife people would not consider practical. But I just love knives.( it's a disease, but a good one). Thanks for the Excellent video !
