It's wonderful to see a modern platformer game that truly has the spirit of the classics I grew up with. Now I know Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze came out as well, but with a relatively new IP Playtonic games has done exceptional work. In a way, I do feel like this game was created just for me. Everything from the first Yooka Laylee game was polished and improved, creating a new game that has 20 levels with "B-sides" modes that change up the gameplay. With all the features, secrets, and charm Yooka Laylee 2 has, I can see this becoming a "forever game" of mine.

Excuse that outburst, at first i was really confused why the next Yooka-Laylee game was a 2d platformer, and it wasn't until seeing this that i realized it's a DKC game. I was gonna sleep on this game until there was a half-off sale, and i might *still* not get it just yet, as I am still going through some secondary playthroughs of FE3H... But as soon as I finish that, I think I'll dive right in!

@@danwolf6307 What do you mean? This game released on the switch the same day as every other console.
Playtonic actually rolled out an update that makes getting the Golden Try less tedious. You now just flip a switch outside the Lair and you can access it bee-less at any point in the game. And they confirmed that you can get the Golden Try at any point this way, without starting a new save and going through the tutorial again.

I still want a Twooka Laylee. I know they can do it. Like they said themselves, they were being ambitious on an indie level budget. I imagine they can learn from their mistakes.
Yooka Laylee was pretty not good, I don’t think it was good enough to warrant a sequel

That’s bs! I get the idea of a perfect run, without the protection, on the hardest level, but you won’t beat that level without practice! There should just be an option to leave the beetalion behind so you can retry the level more frequently. That makes me mad just thinking about it! Like the most tedious process between sr for a shiny Pokémon.
What was surprising is that the majority of the music wasn't Wise or Kirkhope but Matt Griffin and Dan Murdoch, who did an amazing job.

I assume so, unless it's been done before. I don't remember it being done before, though. I bet they were stoked when they realised they could make a terrible joke and not even have to bother changing the name of the mechanic.
To be exact, Celeste took the idea of "B-Sides" from cassette tape B-Sides, hence why you nab tapes to unlock them, and for this game it was mostly a Bee pun, but still notable that it's the "Flip Side" of a stage
i'm very happy that Yooka-Laylee ended up with a good game anyway. after all of the backlash of the first game, i'm glad Playtonic continued forward and created an excellent game.

@@jasonsummy7924 JonTron had a 0.5 second voice cameo as some miscellaneous character in a porta-potty. The clip was patched out after Jon made statements supporting ethnic nationalism. Cue the review-bombs and internet rage patrols.
Like, it was so bad, I literally had someone come into one of my streams of the game, telling me I should request a refund because I was sold something that was taken back. As if I backed the game exclusively for an incredibly insignificant easter egg, a cameo from someone I don't particularly care about.
How was the actual game? I enjoyed it. It was a fun 28 hours. It's not Banjo Threeie, but it's not *bad*. The worst thing I can say about it is that I wish there was more.

How completionist deals with all of this is beyond me, He has some dedication.
Mediawatcher when you don’t have to worry about working and you can play video games for a living and live on the internet instead of forcibly interacting society this dedication becomes very easy to do. This is a surprisingly easy life, who would’ve known right?

"playing video games for a living" can also be a right pain in the ass. Ask any game tester, or in this case; any completionist. 62 hours on a single level again and again? That's pretty insane. It does not sound like a good time, so I'd consider that to be work as well.

You're not wrong; he does sit around playing games all the time. That's his job. That doesn't mean it's not _work_, and THAT's what we were discussing here. I'd say sitting for 62 hours on the same thing over and over again is pretty mentally taxing. And that's just playing the game. Apart from that, he does a lot of other things when it comes to running the business and producing the videos. Most of that has him sitting down, but the same can be said for more or less any office job.
In any case, we might not see eye-to-eye on this and that's fine. I just think there's a bit more to it than what you're saying, but eh. I suppose it doesn't matter.
@7:56 Don't forget to credit the new composers for this like Matt Griffin amd Dan Murdoch. Griffin did a lot of tracks that I at first assumed were done by Wise like "Underwater Saunter" and "Windmill Way". The guy has a lot of potential going forward. Same for Dan Murdoch.

Impossible Lair DLC: Beat the whole game without being hit
If David Szymanski ever does DUSK 2, he'll probably have a super secret level that only unlocks if you beat ALL levels on DUSKMARE difficulty. For clarification, DUSKMARE difficulty makes you a one-hit wonder.
(Please don't actually do that, David. Jirard's got enough health problems as is.)
Also, Jirard should definitely complete DUSK. Even though DUSKMARE is still a feature in the game, you only have to play through A level on DUSKMARE to get the relevant achievement.

Don't forget about composers Matt Griffin and Dan Murdoch! They actually did the majority of the soundtrack, with Grant only doing the overworld music and David only doing a handful of level tracks and all the Impossible Lair music. Many of the tracks you attributed to David are probably actually by Matt or Dan!

This game is easily one one of my favorite games this year. Absolutely amazing & such a beautiful game.
I look forward to watching any% speedruns of people beating the impossible lair in like 10 minutes from a clean file.

I think even speedrunners are scared of the difficulty, I've only seen one legit speedrun any% in 21 minutes, not optimized at all but it's technically the world record at the time I'm writing this comment xD

The Completionist Heads up man, Matt Griffin did 28 of the 56 pieces in the soundtrack Kirkhope did 4 (the overworld themes), Wise did 13 and Dan Murdoch did 11.
I just wish more people gave the other guys (particularly Matt Griffin) credit. It bums me out you and most reviewers don’t give Griffin and Murdoch the credit they deserve.
The alternate version of chapter two is a water level. The music sounds like Aquatic Ambience to the point you’d swear it was Wise. But no, it was Griffin.
Be the change you want to see in the world, make a TH-cam video called "Matt made half the music" . Or get someone else to do it. But if you do it you get all the fame and ad revenue.

To be fair, hes the new composer and his style is near identical to David Wise's so it is an easy mistake to make. Still, credit where credit is due, hes amazing and I hope he does more music in the future.
David Wise is so powerful, he created 2 clones of himself just to compose enough music for this game.

Most of the music is actually by Matt Griffin, with a few tracks by Dan Murdoch. The lesser known composers deserve props just as much as good ol' Wise and Kirkhope.
I just got that same Yooka Laylee Plush :). I really like Yooka Laylee series it feels more like a Banjo Kazooie successor over Nuts and Bolts... Thank you playtonic! 😊

I feel like the cumbersome nature of the "Impossible Lair" level could have been fixed by introducing a choice system upon entering the level after the initial attempt.
"Would you like to storm the Impossible Lair with the Beetallion?
-YES! Let's go! (x out of 48 assembled)
-I'll do it myself!
-Not yet."
Selecting "I'll do it myself!" would bring up some sort of prompt like;
"Are you sure? It'd be much easier to get through it with the Beetallion at your back.
-Yes! I can do it!
-I'm not sure..."
From there, it would restart normally if you die on the level.
Not throwing shade; I’m a huge fan of the Completionist, but I think it’s important to mention that most of the music for this game was not composed by Grant Kirkhope and David Wise. Not a huge deal, but I just wanna give credit where credit is due because the main composers hadn’t ever worked on a DKC game and yet came out with a great soundtrack nonetheless.
This game music is composed by David Wise, Grant Kirkhope and Steve Burke. It was announced at the beginning of the development.

Man congrats and I definitely will be voting for ya. Been watching your videos for years and got me into doing everything (within reason) in video games.
I also consider the dkc series to be top tier unrivaled 16-bit platforming. I've beaten 1 and 2 a dozen times each and still genuinely enjoy the art, music, and tight, dynamic platforming.
I love how YookaLaylee is kind of becoming like a Rare Redux. I'm really curious if they'll go ahead with a third game and tackle another genre.

I picked up the game yesterday after watching this episode, and I really enjoy it! I wish I hadn't passed up on Yooka-Laylee when it first came out.
Same. I also regret skipping Yooka-Laylee when it first came out! It was one of the Xbox Gold games this month fortunately and I'm super happy I got to finally play it. Loved it and can't believe such a great game got so much backlash. People are weird.
I played Impossible Lair first though and yeah, it's the even better game. A masterpiece, only outclassed in the genre by Tropical Freeze (which I personally think is the greatest 2D platformer of all time).

It ain't turned yet, people don't know about this game, it needs more word of mouth to be a success.
Thankfully they didn't give up. YL deserves to be a legendary franchise.
I just wish that them as characters had better designs, but it's a good sign that it's my one of my few big gripes with this game.

I don't get why people claim this game is nostalgic, it resembles much more the modern DKC rather than the old DKC. I'm good with that, I prefer modern DKC, however I wouldn't describe this game as "nostalgic", is just a great platformer.
Because ppl are fanboys. .. and they haven't actually played dkc in decades and are miss-remembering.
With all the overworld stuff, it honestly makes me think a lot of DKC3.

the overworld in this game was what really sold me on the game. I never played the DK country games growing up, but it really scratched the banjo kazooie itch I've had for a while. it's become one of those games I wish it was possible to play for the first time again because of how fun unlocking the overworld was for me

Is it just me, or does it sound like Jirard's saying "layer" just about every time he says "lair"?
I have an impossible game for Jirard. Star Ocean: Till The End of Time. There is an in-game achievement for beating the final boss with a team of level 1's. Which is impossible.
You just need to use synthesis a LOT. Final boss is easy compared to how many of the games bonus bosses. Like lenneth. (Gets PSTD at the thought of Nibelung Valesti)
Have fun trying to get the Platinum trophy for that game.
