Recreate THE FLASH Lightning Effect ACCURATELY | Advanced After Effects Tutorial

- In this advanced After Effects Tutorial I'm gonna show you my approach how to recreate The Flash Lightning Bolts moving in slow motion and with a chromatic RGB split effect.
As always no plugins used!
I tried to be as accurate as in Zack Snyder's Justice League but using efficient und straightforward techniques.
I apologize that this is not a step-by-step tutorial and that I'm rushing through the video. That's why it's rather an advanced tutorial.

The subsurface scattering teqnique is amazing...Iwill recreate it(the lightning)with cc particles world fx,with some glows and all...with a custom depth map...perhaps from runway ml...btw its so incredible ❤️❤️

two line equations the Start line and one end line and make the one equation approach the second equation as it gets closer to the point of interception. That's the maths I would use to do lightning bolts with some touch ups.
That sounds like rocket science to me 😂. But thanks for the hint. Maybe I can achieve what you suggested with AE Expressions
Hi !!! There is a way to had chromatic aberration to only the lightning for example?
But in general i mean put that effect to only one particular part of the image ?
It would've been cooler if:
1. You added more than just one lightninbolt
2. Apply a trim path effect.
But generally speaking this tutorial is beyond great.

What did you draw the first lines with?
yeah I still can't get passed copying the mask path and turning it into a curved line. Mask path is attached to mask so everytime I try to copy the path, it just copies the whole mask and I don't get a shape. just the mask

Thank you 😊. Just open the mask and select the “Path” attribute. Then copy the path open the shape layer and paste it into it’s “Path” attribute. Hope it was clear.

Love the tutorial, Everything seems to work for me until the part 5:02 where he plays with the wiggle. My path does not change when I move the numbers. Also at min 4:32 when he copies the path into the shape layer, his layer says "path" and mine says "mask path" not sure if that is the problem.
Thank you. I know this tutorial has been criticized for being too fast. So I might left things out that I took for granted. Sorry for that. I’m not in front of After Effects now but I try to give you a quick help. Try to select the “Path” parameter when you paste the path. Then it won’t be a mask path. And that’s the reason why wiggle doesn’t work. Because it’s a mask path, not a shape layer path. I hope that helps😊. If not I’ll be at my desk in 14 hours again 😎

Hey I love the tutorial idc that it’s too fast you can alwaays slow it down but I have a question I’m at the point where I added the wiggle paths but for some reason anything I do isn’t changing the line I made. If anyone can answer my question would be greatly appreciated!!

@@secretchannelforhomework1075 i moved around a bit ended up finding it I think the path was like in some weird obscure location I think a separate vid helped me find out best of luck sorry I wasn’t of much help.
Hi 👋. Maybe it’s the order of the operators. E. g. the wiggle operator should be put after the stroke operator to see something happening.

I love The Flash and started to learn Ae to be The Flash, I followed tutorials of "Film Learnin", quite good but nowhere as realistic as your one! So maybe just speak out every click you make and that would help a person who just wanna do cool stuff like this. Thanks! Looking forward to more awesome VFX tuts.

Thank you. I think in C4D you would get more control over the shape & the course of the bolts. And it’s real 3D 😊. However, i would still create the final look (glows etc) in After Effects 😎
when I rotoscope the copy footage layer, the effects work up until a certain spot, and then they bug out and disappear, how do I fix this. (I do have to get this done very soon so any help would be fantastic)
Hi 👋. What happens excactly? The effects just disappear completely? Or do they look glitched? Could be many reasons. Is the footage properly rotoscoped until the end? Did tracking work properly throughout the footage? Is everything covered by another layer? Do you have enough RAM?
@@MichaelPonch it seems like the effects just disappear after a certain frame. After some process of elimination, it turns out the issue is somewhere with the rotoscoped layer, the rotoscoped mask disappears after a certain frame

Hallo 😊. Bitte nicht die Maske (z. B Mask 1) sondern die Maske aufklappen, wo eine Attribute zum Vorschein kommen (Mask Path, Mask Feather etc.). Und genau da das Attribut Mask Path auswählen und kopieren. Ich gebe zu, meine Tutorial ist ein wenig zu fast paced 😂. Ich hoffe, ich habe Dein Problem richtig verstanden und kann Dir damit helfen 😎

Sorry, when my tut is too fast. You select the pen tool (top bar) and draw into the composition window. Make sure no layer is selected. Otherwise you would create a mask path. Hope that helps 😊
How do you copy only the mask path? Every time I try, it copies the whole mask.
Sorry that my tutorial is a bit fast. Just open the parameters of the mask until you find “path”. Select the name “path” and copy. That should work 😎

@@rafadip8162 you want to copy just a part of your mask? So you have multiple masks in one path?
@@rafadip8162 "If you want to take a mask and convert it to a shape layer then all you have to do is select the mask path, copy that, then use the pen tool (keyboard shortcut g) to draw any path in the comp window. You then spin down the shape layer's Contents, drill down to Shape>Path, then select the path and paste."

Hi 👋. It’s hard to tell without seeing it. Does your footage have the same frame rate as your composition? Did you slow the footage down? Or is your footage a screen capture and has duplicate frames? Maybe your footage is untrackable because it’s too dark or noisy? Or maybe it looks as if it’s vibrating on screen but looks perfect when rendered 😊

Yes, I know it's fast, sorry for that. My newest tutorials are mostly step-by-step :). The wiggle path operator must be placed AFTER the Stroke operator. Then it should work.

@@MichaelPonch already did ☺️🙏🏼, right now I’m struggling to copy it to my video, either the adjustment layer is a big white screen over my video or I can’t copy the tracked motion points over to the sub-composition (I hope you understand what I mean I‘m a complete newbie) 😩
@@mike.ripped Really hard to explain with words when you are a beginner. but I'll try :). Track your footage inside the composition, link the Control Nulls to your tracked Null (via the link pickwhip) and reposition them to match your tracked Null. But then switch the video off to make it unaffected by the adjustment layer. Instead make a new video composition, put the Light Stroke composition on top and set blending mode to Add or Screen. I hope that helps a bit :)
