  • According to approximately 200 reports made by Nunavik Inuit, a series of dog slaughters were undertaken or ordered to be undertaken by Canada and Quebec government officials or their representatives in several Nunavik communities from the mid-1950s until the late 1960s. Government officials and their representatives did not hold effective consultation with Nunavik Inuit, nor seek nor obtain their consent to the slaughters. Makivik has been seeking, on behalf of Nunavik Inuit, an acknowledgement of these events and remedial measures.
Years ago, Makivik submitted a brief on the dog slaughters issue to the federal and Quebec governments. Makivik reiterated its demand that governments undertake an independent inquiry into the dog slaughters that occurred in Nunavik during the 1950s and 1960s. Also Makivik launched a documentary on the dog killings entitled “Echo of the Last Howl.”
The Federal Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development heard Nunavik and Nunavut witnesses speak to the issue. The committee adopted a motion to request that the government appoint a superior court judge to inquire into the matter.
In response to the standing committee’s recommendation, the commissioner of the RCMP was requested to review the RCMP’s actions with respect to the allegations. The executive summary of the RCMP report was submitted to parliament in November 2006. Makivik received the RCMP’s 775-page internal report in December 2006.
The report concludes that there is no information of an RCMP or a federal policy to eliminate sled dogs, but that the RCMP destroyed some dogs because they were disease-ridden, hungry, the number of dogs was too high or because they were dangerous.
The Quebec government was strongly lobbied by Makivik to conduct an examination on the dog slaughters in Nunavik. In addition, Makivik will be providing financial support to the QIA and collaborating in their work in establishing a truth commission on the dog slaughters.
Following a meeting between the president of Makivik and the Quebec Minister of Native Affairs, Benoît Pelletier, Quebec and Makivik agreed to address the issue of the Inuit dog slaughters through an independent examination. Quebec and Makivik jointly appointed a former judge of the Superior Court of Quebec, Judge Jean-Jacques Croteau, to lead the examination with the objective to review and analyze the events that occurred during the 1950s and 1960s concerning Inuit sled dog killings.

Great documentary. Has a owner of an Quimmiq (Canadian Inuit Dog) I know how kind and loving this breed of dog is. This killing was one of the worst thing that the Canadian government did and should have never happened. As a Canadian I was unaware of all this until I got my own Quimmiq (Canadian Inuit Dog) name Atal, I was shocked that I did not learn about this in school. I am glad that this breed is still alive and there numbers are slowly getting higher and that my own dog Atla will be part of a breading program to keep this gear dog breed alive. We need to learn from this tragedy and be better humans.

      Watching this from Greenland.
We were not that unlucky here, our government actually protected our traditional lifestyle, although it was not perfect, the Danish government treated us much better Canadian inuit were treated.
I, for now, has nothing much to say, but I can relate to the dog issue. I myself is a dog owner ( Greenland sleddogs) and if possible and/or wanted I'd gladly help out with dogs for breeding purpose.
We have "pure bred" sleddogs because of the fact that, it is not allowed to have other dog breeds in northern Greenland, and that the Danish government didn't act like the Canadian. This to make sure that our sleddogs do not get interbred with "European" dogs which would weaken their abilities to survive and thrive in the arctic.
      Greetings from Greenland.

What the authorities did when they killed the Inuits dog's was the next best thing to genocide..they must have sat down and thought how can we destroy their way of life? Utterly disgusting brutal behaviour!

How could anyone give the order to destroy their beautiful dogs and with them their livelihood and transport! Its hard to believe but the slaughter of all people of tribal societies throughout history is hard to believe. These are proud hunters with incredible skills that deserve respect and help from the government not cruel brutality and destruction of everything they hold dear. Its disgusting and disturbing.! I hope there's such a thing as karma. I wouldn't blame the Inuit for hating the white man and authorities, its disgusting cruel heartless behaviour that was meant to destroy the Inuit people who have respect for nature and people. Snowmobiles don't know where the ice is thin..dogs do !

The sled dog is the oldest man & dog history spanning over 15,000 years. Similar things happened in history to the Chukchi people in Siberia whose sled dog were attacked in an effort to eradicate the Chukchi. The North American Native Indian Dog was thought to be extinct and being aided by breed enthusiasts. Recently the one-sided opinion attack by animal activists using lobbyist monies attempt to eradicate the working sled dog again through misrepresentation. We should respect the differences of all peoples and respect the unique differences of the working sled dogs breeds. It's a history needs to be honoured , respected and protected by our governments against all new forms of attack.

As most Euro-Americans in the Americas care to understand of the onslaught, ethnocide, and unfair treatment that has gone unnoticed for the sake of taking my people's lands; killing our dogs, buffalo, and livelihood continues to be done to us and people of the world look away because we do not look like most.
