The real economy happens in the streets. In St Petersburg the street rate is rising fast. Buy: 1 US$ - Rb 158 / Sell 1 US$ - Rb 203. People are exchanging one, two and five dollar bills to get something extra for the holidays. you can fill up your tank with a 1/3 discount, if you pay in USD or EUR at the street rate. Half a year ago people were buying caviar, cognac and video cards with dollars, now they're buying fur coats, heating oil and preserved meats. Some are moving to the dacha more or less permanently, rents in St Peterburg are dropping. The spread between the buy and sell price is widening, that means street traders expect the Rb to start dropping even faster than it already does. There will be a blood bath after the massacre.

Whether anyone gets paid that sign on bonus or not it's still very damaging regardless. A worker leaves the economy and gets killed or disabled and is no longer able to contribute in the same way. Not getting paid means the family gets stiffed and the Russian MOD can keep playing the same scam until they run out of able-bodied people in the economy, and receiving the payments means it just pumps more money into circulation which devalues the currency even further.
I've seen reports of Russian soldiers being extorted and robbed by their senior co-soldiers. Not much you can do when a commanding officer decides to put the squeeze on you.
The worst thing that ever happened to Venezuela, above and beyond anything else, was shutting off foreign exchange. This cut off imports and cleared the shelves of goods, since importers overnight became currency arbitrageurs instead.
What is not being talked about is the people who live outside the big cities. My friend lives in a small Siberian town and she has her hours cut back drastically since there isn’t work. She would have to move away to find better work. But like many people in the World, that would mean selling her house but with high interest rates she can’t do that so she is stuck struggling. People need to realize this fact is also causing labor shortages.
Many years ago in Ontario Canada the interest rates were very high. I still remember renewing my mortgage for 18%! Luckily I was able to sell my house. But thousands of other people simply abandoned their homes. Your friend should try and sell her house asap. She needs to go to where there is work. This situation in Russia is just going to get worse.

Population decline is something Peter Zeihan has predicted as well. Interesting that it plays out now in such a dramatic way Russian state will probably not collapse but when there is no growth, general wealth goes down
A record low number of children have been born in the EU since 1961, the statistical service reported. The reason may lie in people's insecurity about the future, rising living costs and housing prices, as well as global crises, according to the UN. The statistical Service predicted the birth of 4 million children, but 3,665 million appeared, the lowest figure since data collection began in 1961. The indicator also decreased relative to the level of 2022 - by 5.5%, which also became the most serious decline in annual terms in the entire history of observations.
Predicting the population decline required little more than looking at the statistics. Most of the more advanced nations are dealing with that. Of course, most of them aren't actively trying to make it worse.
@gudini2559 were talking about Russia, not the EU. The life expectancy in the EU is far longer than in Russia, the fertility rate in the EU is far higher than in Russia the standard of living in the EU is far better than in Russia.

Joe, excellent analysis. More broadly than workforce, it would be interesting to look at more commodities et al rather than market/economic indicators, similar to your butter, potato examples that give us all clues to Russia’s demise, given data is gradually being blocked to enable Putin to save face. Appreciate you have started this but are there more examples, such as near countries immigration of Russians, if this data is available. The reduction in exports to Russia from countries who used to export, types of exports, whether produced in Russia or not etc. Imports into countries no longer importing from Russia again types of goods. (Besides oil/gas related. Just trying to think of data that non Russian countries publish that is still accessible that will illustrate Russia’s problems. Fascinating and all indicators of Putin on his knees.
Joe fails to mention that it wasn't just any 1.2 M but a very key segment of their limited breeding pop & advanced professional cadres: men btwn 20-40.
Before the fall of the USSR in 1991, Ukraine was Russia's largest trading partner, and Russian was UKraine's largest trading partner. The Ukrainians made cars, busses, turbines, rockets, and other products that they sold mostly to the Russians. After the fall, the Russian failed to sustain the trade Ukrainian companies, like tike the largest company Yuzhmash, which made rockets for the Russians, weent bankrupt. Putin could have re-started trade. Instead, PUtin wanted to conquer Ukraine, to make Ukraine once-again a slave state of Russia. That's why he invaded. Not for "self defence". "Self defence" is an obscene lie
This video compliments your previous video about food commodity prices. The old phrase: 'Guns and Butter' comes immediately to mind. The unemployment problem affects the non-military industries, as high salaries in dangerous war factories suck the life (and fit workers) out of the consumer sector. 12 hour factory shifts, 6 days a week, leaves little time for social activities other than eating and drinking. So, multiple problems arise: 1) The death rate increases both on the battlefield and in dangerous factories that employ exhausted novice soldiers and workers, 2) Aside from accidents, both venues receive excess amounts of toxic chemicals that lead to infertility and related health issues, 3) Behind the scenes, Russia's health care system is on the verge of collapse, with a rise in new strains of Covid and other viruses spreading from outside Russia, compliments of mercenary soldiers and foreign workers, along with their North Korean and Chinese friends, that are silently eroding the productivity of the military and the workforce. You used the term: Workforce Famine in your video. Famine comes in many forms. Famine doesn't always mean malnutrition, but it does include a diet that contributes to heart disease, cancer, and related problems affecting the mental and physical capacity of workers and warriors.
The whole Russian economy is up a creek right now and past the line of no return. Now it's just a matter of WHEN the collapse happens, not if. This is a very textbook example of "bullets vs. butter" and is shaping up very similar to Germany's eventual collapse and loss in WWI.
Correct observation. But the effects are of a long-term nature. The gaps may be filled by women, foreigners or the unregistered unemployed. It would also be interesting to see what the effects are in the Moscow and St. Petersburg region, as the other regions do not count as much.
I don't think that a good idea. Russia has recruited North Korean soldiers. However, they don't speak Russia and so their all kinds of communication problems and now the North Korean soldiers are going crazy and shooting the Russians officers.
I can tell...half of St Petersburg escaped to Serbia in 2022 where they've established their own community and are close to establishing their own political party. These are highly educated people, professionals in high demand fields. In order to become master of your profession, you need 5, 10, 15 years of training. If they have been replaced by less productive, less knowledgable, less experienced people, the effect on Russian productivity in general is negative. No wonder ruble is falling like a rock.
Also, the sanctions are starting to really tear the economy, raw materials might be easy but making them into products and the tech to do it is disappearing.
Love your videos but lately it feels like the summary and conclusion gets longer and longer just so the video goes over 10 minutes. Anyways keep up the good work.
With Russia's declining population and manpower shortage, I wonder when the "curves" will cross. When will the Russian curve of People vs Equipment switch from "People are more expendable, but equipment is less so" to "Equipment is more expendable, but People are less so"?
I am curious what a realistic trigger point for hyperinflation would be. They can keep the war economy going for quite some time, however I am curious when the general population spirals into hyperinflation. Currently the inflation high but isn't hitting critical mass yet. However if we fall another 10% in a week it could theoretically cause a crash in confidence. Which is already a big factor in international trade to begin with. That said it would great if they try to balance things out with quantitative easing but I doubt they are taking the bait.
How odd , so you say killing your workers will create a workforce crisis ?? Did you tell Putller that , i dont think he can get to that conclusion on his own .
Trump & Russia - Will Trump & Leon now start supporting Russia in the Ukraine war when he becomes the next USA President & is the Trump family still getting plenty of private Russian money but now in gold, etc?

The reduction in exports to Russia from countries who used to export, types of exports, whether produced in Russia or not etc. Imports into countries no longer importing from Russia again types of goods. (Besides oil/gas related. Just trying to think of data that non Russian countries publish that is still accessible that will illustrate Russia’s problems. Fascinating and all indicators of Putin on his knees.
Brilliant video as always thank you so much for all the information provided
Thanks, Joe.
Thank you very much!
Thanks and Happy New Year
Great job Joe as usual thank you for the information
Happy New Year, Mr. Blogs.
Russia is hilarious, everyone blaming each other, but no one will ever blame the one most at fault, Putin.
Seems great to me.
Thank you
Joe fails to mention that it wasn't just any 1.2 M but a very key segment of their limited breeding pop & advanced professional cadres: men btwn 20-40.
Happy New Year Joe. Please keep up the great work!
Thank you for your insights. Happy New Year!
aww cute otter at end, thank you!!:)
Hey Joe could you do a video on the rebuilding of Mariopole,I would like the truth on that
From what I read in school , below 2.5% unemployment can be inflationary.
110 Rubles to 1 USD looking good for Russias future 😂
Meaningless rube to USD! Even if you have a millions rubles, it’s only good if you live in Russia! Cannot exchange rubles and no one wants to anyway!
@bruce4130 unless you are from Russia and wants to shop or go on vacation.
Your comment is so true. I get fed up with people claiming ' Putin has only invaded Ukraine because he is worried about NATO'

Another channel (The Enforcer) stated today that the Russian currency is now back on the market and traded today at 111 to the US dollar.
In deep trouble
Crisis
Crashing
Collapsing
Personnel famine? That's actually a pretty accurate way to describe things.
Oh boy, the Ruble is getting hit again today. New video incoming lol
I really like your content and also the statues in the background. Any chance of getting more info on the current piece?
Also, the sanctions are starting to really tear the economy, raw materials might be easy but making them into products and the tech to do it is disappearing.
Everything going accordin to plan. :)
What? 😱 Pootin ran out of slaves?? 😱
Quantity is quality on its own terms. Stalin. Zero respect for human life. Nothing new in the Russian mentality.
Love your videos but lately it feels like the summary and conclusion gets longer and longer just so the video goes over 10 minutes.
Anyways keep up the good work.
The men are all here in Thailand.
With Russia's declining population and manpower shortage, I wonder when the "curves" will cross. When will the Russian curve of People vs Equipment switch from "People are more expendable, but equipment is less so" to "Equipment is more expendable, but People are less so"?
Unfortunately, you do not choose your neighbors and Russia will not move, but we must resist.
Breaking: russian ruble crashing!
(111 rubles = 1 USD)
Is it breaking when it is just following a longtime trend?
@Pikkabuu look at the 1 day graph/ major move (7 rubles increase to
1 USD)
80 Robux= $1 USD.
Robux is more valuable than Rubles!
Then why isn’t unemployment in negative figures?
nice vid. also otters are extremely cute but stink to high heaven...
Remember that a lot of the 2,3% unemployed is living in the rural areas, where there is no work to be obtained. No matter the war.
однажды Обама сказал, что экономика России, разорвана в клочья и вот опять....😀
Love your football analogy 😂
0:02 ahh, my favorite topic (russian economy)
@Joe Blogs, They accept trading again. 1USD is now around 110 russian ruble.
Awww, baby otter 😊

1 USD = 110..50 Rubels. Today December 30, 2024
“Personnel Famine” … how 1984 of them.
786000 ish actually... 427000 this year alone as of december 30th 2024
600000 might be how many have died given wia are more then 50% more likely to off themselves then be rescued... I've also read that russia has over 500000 mia (likely dead but not recovered soldiers that they claim are missing to avoid paying families)
