    I have 5 amanos in a 20 gallon with 1 betta. They started to slack on cleaning even if I don't feed them that much. I added 2 black helmet nerites which instantly started to clean all the seiryu stone and make it look brand new. Then the shrimp started panicking, it was so funny, they instantly started eating green dust algae off the rocks too :D No glass/rock scraping needed, this crew makes my planted tank look natural, yet clean!

    Amano shrimp aren't available in my area. I ended up with 9 cherry shrimp as part of a private plant deal. The guy was selling live plant cuttings, but the minimum amount was $20 worth. I didn't need that much, so he offered to give me less cuttings plus the cherry shrimp for the $20. Two months later, I still have the cherry shrimp. We rarely see more than one or two at a time, but once we were thrilled to see a "shrimp parade" with 5 of them walking across the aquarium.

    I've had two ammonos in my tank for goodness knows how long. One finally passed on a few months ago, but the other one as been around...for around 4+ years...at least!! I've truly lost track of how long that guy has lived. I named him T1000 because of his color, and I think it's so apt, as he seems well nigh indestructible! I've heard that they can last a long time, as they are not inbred to death, but wow! I saw the even longer lived one feed upside down facing the surface of the water. So amazing. It blows my mind when I see that; it reminds me how differently gravity works underwater, especially with tiny critters like that! Cherries are pretty, but, like most shrimp, they tend not to last long. So many shrimp are hopelssly inbred, and so their genetics are garbage and they don't last long :(

  • @Nyraksi
    @Nyraksi ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I like and have both. Cherries are cute and small and it's really fun to be able to see the whole breeding process. Amanos can get quite large and are absolute machines with cleaning a tank. Because they're big, they're easy to see and observe. I can only put larger amanos with my betta since he likes to eat cherry shrimps. For a species only tank, cherries are the way to go. For a community tank, I prefer larger amanos since they can't get eaten by the most popular tropical fish.

    My larger tanks have amano, my smaller tanks have cherry - I love both for different reasons. The amano shrimp are jerks tho & will swim off with an entire wafer nearly big as them meant for my goby's/corys. I've seen them actually wrestle the wafer away from my other critters & "attack" (hilarious to watch) in competition for food. Example: Curious (Gardneri) killifish checking out food that ended up at bottom of tank....amano jumps on his face, killifish swims off confused, amano snags the tasty tidbit. Nobody messes with my amanos lol! I've had to get creative making sure my bottom feeders get enough to eat. Also, if my hand is in the tank, I inevitably end up with 1 or 2 amano shrimp crawling on it & picking away. Those teeny-tiny pincers they use feel so funky on skin.

    Can female Amanos still look heavily pregnant without giving birth? In the video some of these Amanos look ready to drop and one of mine at home does too.

      They will still carry eggs and the eggs will hatch, but the larva will die in freshwater within a day or two.

    i think i like amano shrimp more. thats because how i enjoy looking at a tank i think. i like understocked tanks as they resemble nature to me a lot more. you dont go out to a lake or river, take a peak and see like 100 shrimps sitting on 60cm area. i actually enjoy not seeing stuff all the time because it makes you for them and then you re happy once you found them. i think seeing a shrimp or 2 here and there feels alot more relaxed than seeing an army of shrimps all the time. i rather have more variety in stock. instead of having a big shrimp colony, rather have a few amano, a snail or 2 and a handfull of fish so the tank just feels more rounded

    GTF is my favorite thing on TH-cam. I have cherries in my planted tank with neons and corys. I expected the shrimp to breed but no babies yet. But I do see a new cory sneaking out of the rocks every couple of months so at least something in the tanks is breeding.

    I didn't realise that "fancy" shrimp is very expensive in the West.
    Just recently I bought cherry shrimps for just a little under 2$...
    FOR 150 OF THEM. Though it is the cheapest I can find and for "normal"(slightly to kinda red) ones. If you aren't really searching, it's usually about 4¢ each In my country.

    I got a group of 4 cherry shrimp to take care of brown algae in my betta tank because the color looked great with my koi betta and plants. Of course the next day I could only find 3 and a betta with a full belly🙄🙄🙄 I think amano shrimp might work better due to size and semi translucence so wish me luck!

    I have both but love them equally. I didn’t understand how aggressive the Amanos are about their food, and I have 5 ginormous females in 10 gallons with my betta and Bloody Marys. I would not recommend that many in a small tank, I really have to stay on top of feeding them.Thugs! You are spot on about spreading food around. Most of my Amanos come up for hand feeding when the betta gets fed, and they still squabble over food. LOL

    I don't believe in tank overstocking as long as fish can move around and you keep up on water changes like a very dense guppy tank as long as the water is clean and the fish get fed you're good

    Good information! I was interested in Amanos, but I’m afraid they might outcompete my Habrosa Corydoras for food. I already have two female guppies in the tank that hog the pellets!

    • @pjp9383
      @pjp9383 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have amanos in with guppies and a honey gourami. The amanos will definitely each grab a sinking pellet and carry it away to eat. If they can reach and carry two, they'll do that too! But then it takes a while for them to eat. I break softer pellets in halves, quarters or more and spread them round the tank so everyone gets some.
