I bought my jewel orchid at an orchid show at least 15 years ago and it is blooming as I write this. It has teeny tiny white orchid spikes. I bought it for the leaves and the orchids were a suprise!!

I got the velvetty maroon one bought from online shop. Indeed, it's fascinating because its "veins" glitter when exposed, for close-up inspection, out in the sunlight, or even with cellphone flashlight. ❤

Planting it in a wide, shallow pot gives it room to get it’s natural sprawling, ground cover shape . That way you get lots of flower spikes which are quite delightful if not overly showy.

Be careful with mold. You can add a few springtails and a little active coal, that will often do the trick, the springtails need a tiny bit of dry yeast once a week to keep them happy. Jewel orchids also like soft water.

I recently got my first one and put it In bright light (west exposure). I noticed the deep green color started to fade, so I moved it to a lower light area and the color came back.
Yeah what people mean by light must vary so much indoors because my "bright indirect light" (north eastern in the southern hemisphere) is too much for my ludisias.

Between Europe and Canada, you guys have the BEST plants!! In the States we have some nice options BUT... since I live in NYC, my options are box stores, over priced plant district in the city, going north and hoping for the best, or shopping online. Shopping online is not a bad option other than it can get pricey and I don't always want to wait for the plants to arrive. I want them in my hands as soon as possible. Great Plant Great Video! and I really liked the sped up video of the plant growing over the 2 weeks.

Mine is sun burnt. I moved it to a littke jar with a drainage layer of stones and coco coir when i got it . How can u save it it got too much sun and has red on the leaf and all the leaf tips are shriveled snd saggy

Leaf grown is never constant. When the plant decides to put out a new leaf, then the unfurling process usually takes a week or two. The dossinia (the green one) had a new leaf showing so that's why I was able to capture it over the next two weeks :)
I just got a small ludisia that came planted in a cactus mix (lots of perlite and sand). I'm wondering if I should switch to sphagnum now.
If it's growing fine, don't change it. Plants that are getting the right light and being watered accordingly can grow in a variety of different soil media.
I noticed they grow better in spagnum moss!!

What do you do about fertilizing for this orchid especially if it's in moss?

The other names are because it's a hybrid. Regular ludisia discolor doesn't quite look like that.

While reporting my jewel orchid, I accidentally broke off some of the bottom stem/root... do you think it will still be okay?
If you still have at least one viable node it can grow new roots and will be just fine :)
I love your video Darryl! And your Jewel Orchids are beautiful. My Jewel Orchid is super leggy. Is this an indicator of not enough sunlight?
Thanks, Samantha! I say that plants grow as Nature intended given your environmental conditions - if leggy is the shape, that's the shape. If you prefer more compact, then brighter light for longer would be better - that doesn't mean more direct sun, it means more sun diffused through a white sheer curtain for a longer duration.

Noooo, no darling, they naturally grow on forest floors with lots of shade, exposing them to lots of bright light is the wrost thing to do! Ideally they should be placed in shade but near good light
