I bought Anoectochilus brevilabris but they were grown in soil and I hated it so months back I changed them to mostly sphagnum moss with a really tiny bit of soil and perlite and topped off with a layer of sphagnum moss and kept it moist and they have been maintaining the dark velvety leafs with electrifying golden veins. Such a joy to look at. Especially with good lighting.
You're so right about the camera not picking up on the sparkle! I just got a Macodes petola and a Macodes sanderiana yesterday. The veins on the petola look like they're encrusted with gold flakes. It never comes out in pictures and I had no idea until yesterday because I had never seen on in person before. The M. sanderiana is not as sparkly, but it looks like holographic velvet ... if that makes sense to anyone.
you should try putting your cutting in LECA! Someone recommended I do that with mine because I was complaining that it was rooting so slowly, and the root growth has been exponentially quicker!
Propagate ludisia in a plastic container with damp moss, close the lid and check on it once a month. I propagated in water at the same time as I did some in the container, I got way better starts from container than water.
Hello brilliant timing to upload this I just ordered 2 variegated jewel orchids and a couple different varieties of the more common type but great care video it has pretty much everything!
@@ErikaLodes Yea the only problem is if they die I'm done so this was really done at the right time hopefully they grow I might be able to pass some cuttings around!
I came to your channel to learn more about the monstera adansonii since I just bought one off etsy (along with a string of hearts and lemon lime maranta), then decided to subscribe because you're very knowledgeable, but more importantly, the swooning feelings🥰 I get when you just ramble on with those sparkling smiling eyes that I can tell you're super passionate about the plant world.
What do u do after the jewel orchid flowers dies? I'm used to other types of orchids. Do I chop the flower stalk? Do they rebloom from the same stalk? Pls inform me. Much appreciation with the info of your video.
That moment when all your lights are grow lights so it's never an issue anywhere in the house. Lol. Have some of my jewel orchids hanging near the lights, some on a lighted bookshelf. Since I'm more into plants themselves, they are the perfect orchid.
i was the one that asked you to do a ludisia video and omg! so gorgeous, such excellent information. im sooooo jealous of your ludisia--mine is currently adjusting to my home and she's been very dramatic so far
I really enjoy your channel! Your passion for plants is contagious! (The good kind of contagious 🌿🌱🌵🌿). Thanks for sharing your knowledge on these plants. I always learn something new!
The the key with getting the foliage wet is air movement. Inside there is usually little air movement vs outside in nature. Air movement is a concern with alot of orchids to prevent rot. Ive accidentally allowed my macodes soil to get dry. But I rather err on the side of caution. My macodes and ludisia will be planted in a 50 gal tank with a water area, fogger, led grow lights, but importantly, air circulation. Now if I can find a dossinia marmorata v. dayii!
Start with the lighting bolt jewel orchid (Macodes petola). No humidity requirements and low light. I cut my plant in half- the base plant gave me 2 new stems. The cutted off top rooted in water in 2 weeks. I had it in northern window with plastic wrap & rubber band.
Your grow lights look very bright but they are low light plants. Do you only keep them on occasionally or keep the jewel orchids a distance away? I have an aenectochilus chaepensis on its way and I haven't found a lot of info about it specifically
IF A STEM OF THE LUDISIA JEWEL ORCHID REMAINS PLANTED IN THE POT BUT A PORTION OF THE STEM LAYS ON THE TOP OF THE SOIL, WILL IT ROOT? I DON'T WANT IT TO ROT BUT I THOUGHT I MIGHT GIVE IT A TRY SINCE IT IS SORT OF IN THAT POSITION. THANKS FOR CONSIDERING MY QUESTION.
i have my ludisia in a soil mixture of orchid bark mixed with peat moss. I added a thin top layer of pebbles because I had so gnats issues (had). I would like to know where I could find the other types of orchids so I could purchase them.
Hi Erika I have been growing phal orchids for 3 yrs now with success...I have been looking for my 1st lucidia with no luck what is you favorite online nursery that have them
That Ludisia is a show quality specimen Erika! I've been growing orchids for years, and recently ordered my first jewel orchids! So this video was perfect timing. I got a plug pack of Macodes from etsy. I built an orchid case a few years ago, I may try putting some on there. Thanks for this info!
Hi Erika, I have the Macodes Petola too and does your needs high humidity? I have mine in a terrarium environment because it likes high humidity but my other jewel orchid that has dark Foliage are easy just like what you said. They don't need high humidity. Btw one of mine flowers right now and it's yellow. Thanks so much for sharing your tips, advice and your jewel collection.
Omg the shimmery ending clips 😭.. here I go putting this on my plant list lol! And which one would you say if more difficult to care for, the Ludisia Discolor or the Pinstripe Calathia?
I Have 1 Ludisia And Might Want Another Since You Reminded Me, IT Doesn't Have To Be In The Window Area. What About The Other 2 Jewels...Would I Have To Pawn Some Of My Jewelry To Be Able To Get Them???
If you were able to find them in person the price would be a lot better. I haven’t seen the online prices, but I’m assuming they’re gonna be a lot more than what you would have to pay in person. Get that jewelry ready to go. Haha just kidding 😊
The macodes are going for over $100 right now. But the other one (anoectochilus chapaensis) are in the $20 to $30 range. I just ordered one earlier today and was looking around for care tips. I've seen everything from planting it in sphagnum to just needs regular potting soil. Who knows? But I also saw some things that said the anoectochilus chapaensis tends to need a more light and more humidity than the other jewel orchids. And of course, I have a lower light house that tends to be very dry in the winter, which is like 8 months of the year. So I'm looking into maybe an open globe terrarium option. Won't be as humid as a full terrarium, but would be easier for me to figure it out. I should have started with the Ludisia! And I may have to get a grow light since I had planned to keep it in my office, which gets very filtered ambient light, and start a shelf of jewel orchids.
I have a cutting in soil of the darker red one. Got it mid-January, then the leaves all fell off and around mid February it bloomed. Now it's just a long stalk of dried flowers without any of the beautiful foliage :'( any suggestions on what to do? I'm thinking of maybe cutting off the flower stem part in case that's taking away growing energy and fertiziling.
I found a jewel orchid growing wild in the forest is Illinois, I can not believe now that I identified it what it is. Maybe someone placed it there. God bless!
I had mine happily growing in LECA for close to a year, then they suddenly rotted on me. My theory is that my container was too shallow and the heat wave we had combined with being to close to the water reservoir was the death of them. I just found some more and am going to transfer to LECA but in a tall pot this time.
yah.. never water from the top for orchids... orchids typically suffer from crown rot if drops of water are stocked between leaves and crown.. or worse you'll get stem rot due to rotting of leaves.
Cant believe your po box is in granada hills. I use to live in granada hills on balboa 2 blocks away from that shopping center lol. But i moved out of state a few moths ago...
It's so sad knowing these beautiful terrestrials are trampled everyday on the forest floor by other terrestrials as well, such as wild boars, jungle mice, jungle chickens and even get pooped on by those intellectuals, the orang utans, here in Indonesia.

I was planning to just let my jewel orchid die, but you've inspired me to try and keep it alive. Thanks!
Carl Fisher no don’t let it die... they will reward you
Yay!!! He will live to see another day 🤩
Mine too.. I think mine is chapensis.
Anyway its too cheap here. I'll just maybe buy a more stable one

Funny how you say lusidia instead of ludisia
Thanks for the video, very informative and I really appreciate the timestamps!
The Macodes love water, it comes from an area with heavy heavy rainfall so keep it moist.
What do u do after the jewel orchid flowers dies? I'm used to other types of orchids. Do I chop the flower stalk? Do they rebloom from the same stalk? Pls inform me. Much appreciation with the info of your video.
That was a very, very detail guide. Ludisia discolor will be the easier plant out of the 3.

I'm putting mine really through the test, but it's holding up pretty well. I switched them to leca.
On. My. LIIIIIIST! Stunning plants!
What intensity do you set your grow lights for the orchids? Do they require a lot of humidity similar to calatheas?

Maybe because different condition, but in Java island, macodes green is many and I just bought two and they're ready to have Flower
I don’t understand First they’re low light, then you suggest grow lights. What am I missing?
They are low light plants. Grow lights are just a suggestion. Just because a plant ca live in low light doesn’t mean they can thrive in it.
lets get some unboxing!
I have the plants coming from Etsy soon 😍

Would a regular ceramic pot work or terra cotta? Or plastic? I keep many succulents and don’t know what to do with non
drought tolerant plants…

Put he slow growing one in self watering pot with just moss and perlight (?) And it will take off I got like 6 little babies from one plant
I was thinking it might need a terrarium for more moisture, even one of the open globe types, or even just more sphagnum to hold the moisture.

You can put it in like a lil bag or container to keep the humidity up. It will root faster 👍🏼 open the container for a lil each day to prevent mold
