A great conversation! What a way to start a year. I learnt physcological safety which is a great thing if organisations are to survive. I however disagree on the experience and intergrity issue. Experience really shape us, I am not the same employee as I was on my first job. I learnt a lot, I am in the process of being fine-tuned to be the best. I however don't support those 10yrs experience what what it should be reasonable. Like he said for someone to be a physcologist one needs to be registered and have sufficient qualifications the same is needed in positions of influence, a degree holder can't just run a big organisation, experience, personality and qualifications make great leaders. Thank you Memory!

Well discussed topic. Thanks Trevor and Memory for this informative discussion that is premised best practices founded on evidence! Memory busted most of the HR practices that have costed many people jobs they deserved. However, I hold a different view on the home office vs work office. African's have already been deny this privilege and COVID showed us different options for us. Flexi-hours at home and office is the future of work. Industrialization thrived on office and plant work - its under threat from the new e-commerce. I believe the internet is changing things. Knowledge - the ability to think and find solutions is the core competency, not an office or position one has held.

There is a relationship between behavior and work performance.
Behavior is determined by your life style, hobbies, favorites, dress code, hair style etc. your outward appearance is the true reflection of your behavior. We all need the excellent work but the excellent work should be done in a more professional and discipline way.

On MBA degree , I agree with Memory . I did masters but this didn't add significant skills to what I already had
I just did it to satisfy market expectations. The same mgt courses that form part of MBA are taught at A Level MOB courses, Henzberg motivation theory, Mcgregor theX&Y, elton Mayor, leadership theories, etc. Marketing courses are shallow compared to A level marketing under MoB. Those who did MOB and MBA van relate while those who never did MOB will not agree because they learnt these concepts at MBA level. Africa focuses on rewarding these useless courses yet developed world focus on productivity and reward experience. Education is required but not given the sole importance.

Pyschological safety ~ that example took me back to my days working as a civil servant. Most of the internal meetings I attended would basically be a source of so many private conversations in the corridors. The rot we see in the public sector can be tied to this, many times people would say yes to everything their principal would suggest, regardless how bizarre it was. Few of those that disagreed with their principals without any challenges, you could see they had some unique skill. Not surprising at all because when it comes with the territory, especially when working with politicians. It takes a different skill to amicably disagree with your principal without disturbing the apple cart. I would say, it’s that skill that most civil servants require training to develop and strengthen.

Great conversation there...I however wish to say Customer Service is not a department...it's a philosophy that should permeate all facets of the organization no matter the personality of the person working in that department. Someone in Accounting for example should have good customer service skills no matter their personality. This is so because they can meet and engage with the customer at any time. Customer service therefore has skills and competences that are trainable into someone no matter their personality. In addition, customer service has quite a number of attributes which go beyond inter-personal qualities like friendliness which could be personality-based. It has such other attributes like responsiveness and customization which have entirely nothing to do with personality Mr Nguwi!

HR people should have the knowledge, skill & competences to run the business through the use of the productive capacities of the organisation's human resources - from the Board right through to the lowest levels - hence HR operates at the strategic level and coordinates efforts towards the attainment of the vision

Our education system is bad or good depending on where you are standing. This guy is a typical worker skilled and articulate. So if you are wearing his spectacles our education system is good. If you stand on the other side our education system does not match the requirements of our country and industrial requirements. We saw the increase of universities as industries closed and unemployment decreased so to me that's bad.
