      When you look at the fact that they were never defeated in battle.... ever! and that they fought their war with international sanctions on them..... they were definately the best. By far. Nearly every country has tried to copy the fireforce system to counter terrorism and insurgency and never accomplished it. Being the best wasnt a stretch at all, bro! And they wont lose that in any time soon. :)

    • @zevlove612
      @zevlove612 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sqnhunter they were defeated in the end forced into a political settlement and 20 yrs later many lost their farms. You always fight with a big picture in mind which the Rhodies failed to do, they had an ostrich head in the sand approach. Winning a few skirmishes while losing the bigger war...not very smart

    • @sqnhunter

      @@zevlove612 I sometimes wonder why people comment on wars they know nothing about. I feel that here with you. The fall of Rhodesia was not about big pictures or head in sand. They never lost a battle in history. They had the finest country in Africa, they had equality in universities and life structure, and they were even integrating Blacks into government, which was a gradual process due to lack of people educated in this field, but what brought Rhodesia down was betrayal. England betrayed Rhodesia at the 11th hour. A betrayal that even hit English people so hard that they rushed to send the English might into battle just two years later in the Falkland war just to protect 1600 people.

    • @zevlove612
      @zevlove612 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sqnhunter Get outta here with that betrayal nonsense. Those are Rhodie talking points you use to convince yourself. You were simply on the wrong side of history. The british and Pretoria all realised early on that your cause was lost and cut their losses simple. At the end of the day politics wins wars and the Rhodesians didnt play their politics right. Instead of snail pace removal of racist policies imagine if it had been done at great speed? It would have been a different country today. It you assess the history of Rhodesia and later post independence Zim objectively and without bias, you will realise that both blacks and whites have been losers due to short term thinking and prejudice, racism and tribalism. Hopefully we will see future generations that dont have that baggage, and can rebuild that beautiful country to the status it deserves as # 1 in africa

    I'm a veteran of the US Army from 1977 to 1980 with a year plus as a Drill Sgt in the Army Reserve. I enjoyed myself and I'm very proud to have had the chance to serve my country. However, after viewing many documenteries of the Rhodesian Army, which I think is a surpereb fighting outfit along with the French Foreign Legion, makes me THIRST and WISH that my time serving in the US Army could been similar at least in the area of TRAINING..... Because that all voulenteer Army, well let's just say there was A LOT TO BE DESIRED.....It wasn't my Dad's Army.....what a DAMN SHAME!!

      Never thought that bikes had a serious role in the bush war. Too much noise, too many fire thorns and not enough range.

      @@G58 Here's a quote from Reuters News Archive re: the Army Motorbike Unit.
      "The army claims that their new motorbike unit provides a fast and flexible force to combat guerrilla attacks in an area of Zimbabwe-Rhodesia, which is said to be infiltrated with Black Nationalist forces.
      The principal role of the eight-man unit is simple -- the soldiers, all of them experienced riders, are heavily armed with automatic rifles, rifle grenades and pistols. They are called into the bush after guerrilla attacks on farms. Its their job to chase the guerrillas, pick up their trail and with the unit's radios to call in helicopter-borne infantry when contact has been made.
      The bikes have been fitted with long range fuel tanks and can travel for up to nine hours. Their advantage, says the army, lies in their speed and surprise. The engines have been specially muffled and the troopers claim they can be almost on top of their enemy before they are able to react.
      In this mock-attack, the motorbike troopers claimed to return fire within seconds, sheltering behind their 175cc Yamahas. But they say the bikes take more punishment from hidden stumps and rocks damaging the engine, than they do from enemy fire."

      Focus, my friend, on the RLI's 1:100 kill/death ratio - the Selous Scouts being widely considered to be the best counterinsurgency force ever - and the brutal training to even become a Selous Scout. Then you will find it easier to take them seriously. There were reasons they dressed this way.

      They had faces of boys and fought like lions. They dressed in what worked best. And they were undoubtedly the world's toughest and best bush fighting army. Allow me to explain the effectiveness of camo shorts.
      Running in full battle fatigues means you get fatigue... You run slower as you run further.
      Our troops wearing shorts, used to open fire, and run after the terrs, catching the rounds they had fired at the enemy troops, stabbing them with the same rounds repeatedly, before taking the same rounds back and reloading the rounds for the next contact, saving the army enormous cost in ammunition. From one pair of fatigues, you could make four pairs of shorts for four troops who could run like lightning. Money saved from all that possible waste of fatigues and ammo, was used to buy the cold chibulies after a long walk in the bush. After all, they did get thirsty...

    The attack by Rhodesian forces into Mozambique called Operation Eland was the most stupid mistake Ian Smith made, after illegally declaring independence in 1965. It was done without informing John Vorster, South Africa's Prime minister. Vorster was furious, believing that the war would spill over into Mozambique. He ordered all South African troops to leave Rhodesia, and stopped all supplies of petrol to that country. That was the final straw. Vorster demanded that Smith settle with Britain, and that was the beginning of the end for Smith. Vorster had his own problems. The raid came a few months after the Soweto riots where dozens of Black schoolchildren were gunned down by the South African police, and with South Africa's reputation in the outside world at an all time low, Vorster need to improve his image in the outside world.
