This is a very accurate portrayal of Rhodesia at that time. I know, I was there. Ps: note there was no REAL racial friction. A ficticious creation of the so-called "Nationalists" who perpetrated GUKURAHUNDI on their so-called own. This should also be known.

Thinking it's only just a "thing" to own and not needing continuous investment and maintenance... they stole it rather than sharing it. And it all went to shit... Ivory Cost, Madagascar, Rhodesia... Had some nervous, training excitement, one day, near the SAW/Angolan border, directing Mirage F1 Jets onto imaginary ground targets, indicated by coloured, smoke grenades. In radio contact with unseen aircraft. Two black specs appear to our rear. Radio contact made. No previous experience instructions to pilots, something like this. "Flamgat Alpha, have you visual. Continue heading, bank right 5, 4, 3, - Bank right, bank right, roll out, ground target, enemy group, 1000 metres north of orange smoke and all that kak." A year later, left alone at Mpacha Airport, Katima area, with a radio on a wooden table. Next thing a C130 pilot asks for landing clearance. Me: "For fut sake, where is Captain Coragous? This is his job, not mine." C130 Pilot: "Say again?" Me: "Mpacha wooden table to C130, left hand down a bit, sorry, right hand down a bit. OK, roll out. Runway directly ahead, there is only one. Yes that's me at the wooden table under the doring boom." Afrikaans voice behind me: Ën wat is hierso aan die gang?" Me spinning around and saluting 😳: Oh, General Viljoen, where did you come from?" C130 Pilot: Thank you for all your assistance. Hey, are you still there?" 😠

Served 1968 to 1982. LMG to 2Lt. Platoon Leadr, Coin Ops, 5 SAI, Durban Regiment, Gr.38 HQ Mil. Int. (Durban, coastal). Volunteered annually for border duty. Did two non-combat operations, reporting directly to Gen. Jannie Geldenhuid at SADF HQ in Ondangua. #1 Cartography updates for SWA/Angola, cross-border operations. Emphasis on secure routes for SADF Armour. #2 Investigation by Pta. Scientists, of the viability of using genetically engineered combination of, Acacia Ataxacantha & Acacia Aranaria (correct name never confirmed) & Sisal to form highly toxic, impassable, border barriers, where required. Remembered: Rfn. Leon Delport, killed in training by friendly fire at Oshivello, SWA. Incident: Crossed into Angola with 3 x Unimogs, in error. Turned around by Lt. Winter of Koevoet, about 2Km. in. Gen. Geldenhuys knew of incident, even before I was back in SWA. 😉
