I dunno, tbh part of it is I've never driven any of these cars in fully stock form back to back. However I definitely reckon of the 3 I've driven this Evo 7 was the best. Yes the Evo 5 probably looks better, but the drive (as with most 90's cars tbh) just isn't as good as anything from the early 2000's.
@KiwiCarLife I just really interested in your opinion about 6.5, because you drove several iconic Evos. And if you get the opportunity to review the Evo 6.5, I'll be the first to watch it )
I need to know - how do you get to drive so many awesome cars?? I am jealous haha On a side note - I've seen Legnum's are popular in NZ (twin turbo V6 wagon) would definitely love to see you drive one :)
Yeah trouble is when I did Accord comparisons, because it always featured my car I only ever had to find one car to replace it with. With stuff like this I'd have to find both an Evo 5 and 7, or Evo 7 and STi at the same time. Not always easy
Hey man you mention the german car for half the price in this video - would love to hear your opinion (in video or not) on an 2009 s3, as I've seen the GTI (mk6 or 7) and BMW's compared. Is that just as good of a hatchback for similar price?
Yeah S3 vs 130i hatch would be a good comparison. I haven't driven an S3 so I wouldn't know tbh. I think I'd have the BMW over an earlier S3/GTi, but the Mk7 is a significant improvement and as you saw in my recent video, it was right on par with the M135i. You'd have to drive both and decide I guess, assuming you're in the market.
I've only driven a 2010 s3 and found it extremely boring being they're all auto. Obviously evo7s are overpriced because of the yank market but an evo 4 will give you 10x the fun of an auto VAG car.depends if you insist on 3 pedals
At some point hopefully! R34 might be out of my reach as I'm still under 25 so would struggle to get insured to drive one. Now that I think about it, I have done an R34, it just had a V8 in it haha
Hmmm yeah true that would be good to try actually. Honestly there's a lot of cars that probably drive better in stock form. Manufacturers know what they're doing
@@KiwiCarLife for the car vs car comparison yes def stock and similar mileage and history. Personally have to disagree I find the evo 7s steering wheel hideous. Reckon you need to drive a 5 with fresh bushes all round and good new tyres, the power slides you can nail with the ayc are great fun
Interesting opinion on the Evo X suspension. Given it's the fastest around the track from any previous (including manual, bugger the SST) i suppose you'd expect it somewhat stiff, just never noticed mine to be stiff even after coilovers. shame about the evo x interior tbh, seats are fantastic but same interior as the cj is a shame
How do you feel about the Evo being 5speed vs STI being 6speed? Also I would imagine the running cost of a 4G63 would be somewhat less than an EJ25, but oh well. Can't go wrong with either
STi sold new in NZ from 2005 (off memory, may have been 2006? pretty sure it was version 10 anyway) onwards are 2.5L, imported are still 2.0. Evo cost more to run than a STi, 2.5 or not.
@@KiwiCarLifehe said favourite not best to be fair, I can understand evo3 was the final evolution of the first shape and they weighed nothing so they were quick back in the day when nzs car scene peaked.
@@KiwiCarLife I think it ll depends on the modding/molesting they've been exposed to. I did a hotlap in a stock Evo10 w SST and it was awesome, lots of bodyroll but fast shifting, felt like a great daily other than that they're thirsty.
Stock power though... it's got a mild exhaust, intercooler and coilovers. Hardly going to drastically change the driving experience. That evo 10 had way more mods and it was still worse haha
Wainui hill aye, nice to see some familiar Welly roads from Sydney
Yesss
This millenial born in 1986 is gonna have to disagree with you and say the Makkinen Evo V or VI were peak Evo. The WRC results speak for themselves.
😂 a Wrc car is loooooong way from you street car buddy
@hondamanvtec2894 it is but the base engineering is there. WRC cars had to have road versions as part of the rules.

Evo 3 and 8 were the best. TM was very disappointing considering it was/is one of my dream cars. Haven't driven a 9. 10 did not feel like an Evi
Tommi makkinen is the best evo out and evo 9
will wait for your video about Evo 6 Tommi Makinen Edition, they call it Evo 6.5 also
Yeah I’ve heard they’re good, then again is it really much different to the evo 5 I reviewed?
@KiwiCarLife I just really interested in your opinion about 6.5, because you drove several iconic Evos. And if you get the opportunity to review the Evo 6.5, I'll be the first to watch it )
_7 or 8 my favorite EVO’s however the 6 is cool too_ …. _thanks for the review_
Yeah I'd have to agree
I think the roman numeral for 7 is Vii, not Xii
That is absolutely correct
Oops yes correct
Should do more jdm rival comparison
I will try!
Nice punchy review mate, nice car but I have always prefered Wrx's!
Another review that has me missing the roads around Wellington!
Thanks man!

On a side note - I've seen Legnum's are popular in NZ (twin turbo V6 wagon) would definitely love to see you drive one :)
I have very generous subscribers! Yes I must get my hands on a Legnum
That's a good shout, legnum vr4s were so specced when they came out
Surprising it drives as well you say, it’s a very ropey example. Nastiness everywhere.
Yes and no, perhaps some of the mods aren’t particularly tasteful, but it’s low ish k’s and mechanically is well sorted
I find the understeer on-throttle interesting - I'm pretty sure Evos are quite mobile in the rear. Maybe it's the tyres?
Not sure but it definitely didn't handle as good as I expected.
Hopefully you`ll review a Legnum VR4 and Legacy GTB :)
Yes now that’s a good comparison
Doesn’t seem to be moving nearly as quick as the gc8 sti ra
Yeah man that Type RA was noticeably faster
You should do more comparisons between the cars you review

The S-AWC is not front biased, it has a center diff.
Actually yes that's a good point. I dunno it just felt front biased with all the understeer...
Have you ever driven a 330CI?
I have, great cars, used to own an E46 M3
Could you do a r33 or r32 skyline review please 🥺🥺
Or r34
At some point hopefully! R34 might be out of my reach as I'm still under 25 so would struggle to get insured to drive one.
Now that I think about it, I have done an R34, it just had a V8 in it haha
Oh cool haha 😂
Soon 😊
Yeah do an r32 gtr in good nick, group a racing legend
Hmm, not a fair comparison without a golden era 2000s GD chassis STI. How about trying my 300kw one?
Got one lined up very soon!
Coils will make any ct9a handle worse without a RCA so not surprised it was as you said drive an example on factory shocks or bilsteins (MR versions)
Hmmm yeah true that would be good to try actually. Honestly there's a lot of cars that probably drive better in stock form. Manufacturers know what they're doing

Yeah, potentially it was just the one I drove but it was one of the most uncomfortable cars I've driven
Entirely depends on the coilovers put on it, spring rates etc
would like to see a comparison of evo 7 manual and the gta version
That would be interesting, mind you we know which one would be better haha
The gta was a terrible idea and an even worse manifestation
How do you feel about the Evo being 5speed vs STI being 6speed? Also I would imagine the running cost of a 4G63 would be somewhat less than an EJ25, but oh well. Can't go wrong with either
EJ20 not 25
@@thedon9670 STI's came with EJ257 in my country
Yeah in NZ basically all the STi's are 2.0L, apart from the more recent ones. And yeah its yet another reason why the STi is better imo

6 look the best in my opinion
True I do agree the 4/5/6 are the best looking, but I reckon the 7/8/9 drive best
No one else heard that fart in the intro? 😂
It was wind and not the gastronimical type
Haha i didn't hear it
Haha if I really did fart I'm sure I would have edited it out!
guy round the corner from has an evo 9 but rarely uses it evos are rare where i live
Yeah man they’re not too common here either.
I love any who buy 3,6 and 9 is my favourite
Yeah I feel the last of each series is the best
Bro that guy in my area I know that place.
Classic
needa get ya hands on a evo 3 rs
That would be cool
now drive a 9
Got one in the works!
The Evo 5 or 10 all day
Agree on looks, disagree on drive

Having driven an evo 5 I'd agree it looks better but this drives better
@KiwiCarLife i guess everyone might have a different opinion , but it can also be the setup on this Evo VIII.
But great review, love your videos.
EVO 9 the greatest of them all 😎🔥
So I've heard! Will have to try one
5, 6 & 9 are the best
They are very good yes
EVO 8MR or EVO9 MR is the best by far!!!
I guess I’ll have to try one!
Evo 2 best
Eww
@@KiwiCarLife evo 2 best
@@KiwiCarLife lol i change my mind it's evo 1
Bit of a pointless review as this is "extensively" modded as you mentioned. Drive one back to back modded vs factory and your opinion might differ.
Still good cars
And he still preferred a stock STI over a modded Evo interesting as well.
Stock power though... it's got a mild exhaust, intercooler and coilovers. Hardly going to drastically change the driving experience. That evo 10 had way more mods and it was still worse haha
Ugliest Evo too. Anything post 6.5 🤮
I would agree the 4/5/6 are the best looking
