Nice! I feel like the price point is definitely the best thing about this device and perhaps you may have undersold it. $30 is basically nothing in this economy. These would make pretty cool gifts - even for kids!
It quickly became my favorite console when it got it last fall. I have the cover/grip and it is perfect. Super portable and a great way to enjoy many games.
I love the ~$30 range of handhelds. That's why I bought an R36S even though I gave it away. ArkOs is sweet. First video of yours I've seen, crazy high production level for only 6k subs, subscribed.
Yep, got one of these to try and love it so much I bought a different color. Feels surprising good in my hands as well. Just don’t open it up unless you really have to change the buttons 😂 It’s a pain to reassemble.
I also have many retro game devices, but I think I use the A30 the most. It's really easy to carry and feels great to operate. But what is the gun-shooting racing game in the video?
I have a miyoo mini+ running Onion OS and the switcher is the killer app on that thing. MinUI looks great but if only it could integrate something like the switcher. Honestly if I had one I'd probably put MinUI on one card with only a handful of games at a time, and fill up another card with Spruce on it.
That’s a great idea. One thing I didn’t get to mention is that MinUI has to be “reinstalled” with the zip file after Spruce is put on the device. It’s easy and keeps everything as it was but one extra step than just swapping (stock and Spruce can be hot swapped though)
@TynologyGaming good to know... Also I had no idea that MinUI used flatpak. Of all the fooks I've seen cover this you were the first person I noticed that from.
@ I didn’t dig into it too much, but immediately saw they were using individual standalone emulators instead of Retroarch cores in MinUI. I’m just assuming they are flatpack distros. Doesn’t matter either way, except that they are very optimized but limited in the versatility a bit (MinUI has a couple options of emulators for GBA and SNES also to optimize for different games that run on one better than the other). It’s a rabbit hole I haven’t gone down yet though, haha. Thanks for watching, I’m glad I included that bit!
Try running some MSU-1 hacks on the A30. I feel like this is where Miyoo devices shine because MSU games just work on all of them. For Anbernic's offerings (and other devices) it can require some tweaking to get working, and in some cases it just won't.
I actually spent a lot of time customizing my CRT shaders for both my Steam Deck and my custom arcade machine. I love how they look. I tinkered around with them on this device a bit, but didn't dive into it in the video
If you ever get the chance you should check out the RG35XX-H which is a step up on everything the a30 is (Stereo speakers, dual Anolog sticks, better performance for higher end systems, build quality) while being relatively about the same size.
Okay start here: github.com/spruceUI/spruceOS/wiki/08.-Creating-a-Custom-Boot-Logo Follow it exactly (make sure you're on Spruce 3.2). The optional step isn't optional if your PNG file is over 40kb, it must be under that to work. After you follow all those steps and have the final .bmp image in the /App/BootLogo/ folder on your SD card, put it in you the A30, go to Apps then Advanced Settings, use "R" to tab over to "Visible Apps" and turn on "Boot Logo App". Go back to Apps and open the "Boot Logo" app and it will apply it. Just know that if it screws up or the image isn't right, it can softbrick the system and will require an unbricking process.
So far I have only tried mine with Spruce. Getting some SNES slowdown with NAMCO's immortal Smash Tennis... (triple sadface) It gets a bit warm, but not as bad as I anticipated based on early reviews. Might switch over to MinUI before giving up (and sending back to Amazon) to see if it fixes the mediocre audio/slowdown on some SNES titles... Still can't beat the RG35XX (OG) with Garlic OS.
Thanks for the insight! I haven’t tried all that many games besides random ones I tested, I’ll see if I’m getting that same slowdown though. Thanks for watching!
@TynologyGaming Yeah, so after installing MinUI, I can confirm that the device is noticeably less warm than it was over the past week with Spruce. Also, the audio/emulaor issues seem to be gone. I'm very happy with the A30 for an everyday device... ESPECIALLY with that 50% off coupon and the Trudeau Tax Holiday on Amazon Canada. Anyway, thanks for the channel and the reply. Liked and subscribed.
@ oh that’s great to know! I really enjoyed MinUI more than I thought I would! Maybe I’ll put it back… Thanks for the like and sub, great to have you 🤘
you are not 100% correct on that playing DC games would require a 150-200$ handheld. the Trimui Brick can play DC games perfectly fine, it just lacks an analogue stick, and the RG34XX costs just 15-20$ more and can play dreamcast just fine. and if you're looking for a joystick for Dreamcast games than the RG40XXV and the RG40XXH both cost around 50$ and can do DreamCast just fine and both have one or two joysticks (the vertical has a single and the horizontal have two) i'm not advocating for Anbernic, i actually dislike their products. but you cant deny that for 45-50$ you can get one of their H700 handhelds and play dreamcast games just fine. you REALLY don't need to spend 150-200$ unless you are looking at trying to play PS2 and GameCube...
Yes I should have clarified that I meant being able to access the core of the 6th generation (specifically PS2 and GameCube) when I was saying “being able to access the next generation”. Dreamcast I know had a lower barrier of entry, and I’d like to review some Anbernic devices that can play DC. Thanks for watching!

Super cool video! Nice shots! I knew nothing about it this little handheld. I'm all about the portables. I'm going to have to get one.
I keep buying them 🫣 It’s more affordable than multiple Switches haha. Thanks for watching dude!
I bought 2 of them on Ali Express for like $30 a piece over holidays and gave one to neighbor kid all setup. Love these, so cheap and very cool!

I knowwww I just kept wanting to scream “ITS THIRTY DOLLARS!” Haha. I may get one for each of my boys next. Thanks for watching Toast!
I already gave it as Christmas present to my nephews!! 🤣🤣
Got it for 32€

I’m grabbing a couple of competitors like the R36S so I can make some comparison videos also! Thank you for the sub! 🙏
Excellent review. Subscribed!

Subscribed and can't wait for more retro videos...
Yesss! They’re coming I promise! 🤘
@@TynologyGaming Perfect, more handhelds I don't need lol (thanks again)

Yeahhhh I’ve heard repairing this thing is a pain in the ass 😅
1:09 I think it came out beginning of last year? 🤔
Yeahhhh when I filmed this in December I didn’t think about it coming out after the turn of the new year 🤷♂️ it came out in April 2024
SPRUCE OS for the win! Hoodie is awesome man! I also got an A30 in December and have been loving it!
Yesss! Thank you! Yeah I got mine during Black Friday but finally got around to digging into it last week! So glad I did
Great video and happy 2025 to you!! 😊🎮
Thank you Marcus! Happy 2025 to you too!
Check the new flycast on spruce 3.3. Change default to "flycast" and try running DC games again
Oh I definitely will, that’s what I use elsewhere. I must have missed it when looking through cores
I also have many retro game devices, but I think I use the A30 the most. It's really easy to carry and feels great to operate. But what is the gun-shooting racing game in the video?
Twisted Metal 2 on PS1!
That hoodie is awesome!

How did you get dreamcast to run smoothly?
Unfortunately I didn’t for most games. A handful of games ran okay but most had really distracting slow down and audio glitches 😭
@TynologyGaming yeah same here. Also psp, so far only pacman championship works for me

What's msu?
You should try using CRT filters on your emulation handhelds. Really can't go back to switch online emulators after I got hooked on them.
I actually spent a lot of time customizing my CRT shaders for both my Steam Deck and my custom arcade machine. I love how they look. I tinkered around with them on this device a bit, but didn't dive into it in the video

Jet Moto, PS1

Yeah I need to get one of those! Maybe do a little review on it. Thanks for the suggestion!
I hope Miyoo on this 2025 update this A30 with more power on same size!!
That would be amazing! Just enough for DC 🙏
Looks neat, great video
Glad you enjoyed it! 👍

@TynologyGaming I think the issue is Retroarch. It just can't handle the complexity on that old 40nm chip.
Changing the core for SNES to SNES9x worked for me, stopped audio and slowdown issues
Can we get the hoodie in pal ?
Yes! Hopefully shipping isn’t insane though 😬
I went with Spruce Its the best!!
I’ve been using Spruce since I made the video but I’ve been wanting to give MinUI another run! I love them both

@TynologyGaming do it 😁
your phone already does this...
Not with a controller built in, not with an sd card slot. Most likely a camera notch.
I just dropped $1100 on a phone. I’m not playing SNES on it 🤣
