Earl Campbell Career Highlights

Earl Campbell rarely gets mentioned when it comes up in the best ever conversation, but Campbell along with Barry Sanders were the only two backs in my opinion to strike fear into defenders. Sanders made defenders fear looking foolish, while Earl Campbell made defenders fear for their well-being. He intimidated through quiet confidence. He would truck a defender and get gang tackled by half the defense, then walk back to the huddle without saying anything.
Career rushing yards speaks to career durability, but Campbell treated each carry as it might be his last, dishing out and receiving an unbelievable amount of punishment. His body inevitably broke down eventually with such a playing style. Prior to Campbell’s trade to New Orleans in his 7th season he trailed only the Great Jim Brown for yards rushing per game average with 98 yards per game. However; for taking a hand off and running with the ball in the game of tackle football, in my opinion Earl Campbell was simply the best.
