I was a kid of the 70's and 80's. Earl was my introduction to what a runningback was. SWC football and onto the Oilers. Earl " The Tyler Rose " would hit ya back. I have been a lifelong fan of him. I cannot imagine being on the receiving end of a lick from him. I really liked the clips of The Oilers against Pittsburgh. He gave the Steel curtain a lesson. Jack Lambert took a good shot or two. Love Ya Blue!!
I’ve seen so many highlight reels. Some of these are not even on his Tyler Rose, Still Standing documentaries. Thank you so much for showing so much never before seen highlights! He is my All-Time Favorite! God Bless #34
I was working in a tire plant in Tyler when Earl first came on the scene. The company hired a few young guys as trainees and I noticed that one was wearing a John Tyler football weight-lifting tee shirt. So I asked him "Is Campbell really any good?" He smiled and looked down, then said, "let me put it this way, I've yet to make him break stride in practice-he ran over me on every play that came my way every time, "Oh yeah?-what position did you play?" "Middle Linebacker" Earl Campbell is a great man & great football player.
He probably lead the league in broken tackles & yrds after contact in those years. You could say that the Dickersons & OJs where just as dominant but I’d guarantee if you where to ask players who they would rather face, they would not say Earl. It hurts just watching him run through tackles with his size and speed. Him and csonka are probably the best 2 pure power contact running backs ever.
I completely agree. Might want to add John "Riggo" Riggins to that list. Earl for sure holds that top spot for me. I giggle even now watching clips of him punishing guys.
This is a great video of one of the greatest ever. I was a kid growing up in this era of football the 80's, what an amazing time. Earl Campbell was always my favorite to watch. Great teams then, Steelers, Cowboys, Air Coryell, what a great time for football and Earl The Pearl is a legend.
I saw a poster of Dan Pastorini in 1977 as a 12 yr old. I decided the Oilers was my team. The next year they draft Earl. They never made it past Pittsburg in 79 & 80 but it was exciting watching the Luv ya Blue era. The Oilers were not on tv very much in my area (Ontario Canada) so I saw them when I could. Stuck with the organization and I am a Titans fan now.
Actually it was '78 and '79 when we couldn't get past the Steelers. In '80 we did "kick the SOB in" but unfortunately it was the Browns that won the division that year. And Oakland beat the Oilers in the Wildcard 27-7 I believe. Incidentally, it was Oakland that won the SB that year making it the 3rd straight year we lost to the team that went on to win the SB. And then Bum Philips was fired a week or 2 later officially marking the end of the Luv Ya Blue era. I had just turned 13 in November 1980. I sure miss that era. Especially the '78, '79 Oilers. In fact, I turned 11 y.o. the day before that MNF game against Miami when Earl rushed for 199 yards and 4 TDs. Everything seemed to go downhill for the Oilers after I turned unlucky 13. Lol.
He was literally 90% of the Oilers offense back then. He could have had a longer career but it was too much wear and tear on his body. He was a bad man though and this great video proves that.
Great video thanks for sharing this. The thing that always is underestimated about Earl was the simple fact the Oilers had virtually no passing game so they knew it was going to be Earl on the run almost 75 percent of the time and they still couldn't stop him.
Thanks for compiling this. What I like best about it is that you presented numerous plays from the same game, which gives one a sense that Earl produced remarkable runs several times a game, game after game. He did it when opponents knew all they had to focus on was stopping him, and they would win the game. I worked with the mother in law of Carl Banks, NY Giants All-Pro linebacker in the 1980s, when the Giants had an outstanding defensive team. She asked Banks once, is there anyone you hate to play, and why. Without hesitating Banks replied, Earl Campbell, because after a game tackling Earl, Banks would be playing the following Sunday with a body that was still sore and bruised from the week earlier. One other thing I can say about Earl is that he seems to truly be a nice man. As a student at the University of Texas I saw him many times on campus, and when a passerby said hello to him, he always would look at them with a genuine smile and say hello back. Other guys who were half the player he was, and likely half the man, acted like they were ten feet tall and owned the place. After I die, should I encounter the God of Sports I will thank him for two things. One for being alive to see Secretariat win the Triple Crown, and the other for being at the University of Texas to see Earl Campbell play for the four years he was there.
When Earl Campbell put his head down and lowered his shoulder he flat out run through or even at times over linebackers and he made roadkill out of defensive backs. I don't care how tough you were or how big of a hit you could deliver if Earl had the ball going north to south already with a full head of steam and on defense you tried to take him on head to head, it was like getting run over by a fully loaded, runaway dump truck.
I've never seen so many defensive players being flattened by one running back! It took courage in the tenth degree to come up and meet him head on only to find you're on your back and he's still dragging 3 of your teammates down the field. And when your offensive line opens a hole for him only gives him more speed to hit the defender that much harder.
The Defense: You tackle him no you tackle him I tried to tackle him last time I know you tried, I was watching you... Let's just try and tackle him together... ok you sure huh
Earl runs by. "Where were you man!?" "What?" "I said where were you?" "I was there." "No you weren't!" "Yeah I was I was right next to you." "Right next to me huh." "You mean right where he just ran past us, that right next to me?" "Yeah." Next play, Earl runs right over you. "HEY MAN! YOU'RE NOT EVEN TRYING!" "Yes I am." "No you're not!" "You had your eyes closed, I saw that!" "I had somethin in my eye." "ME TOO! THE JERSY WITH 34 ON IT, SAYS CAMPBELL ON THE BACK!" "YEAH, HE WAS IN MY EYE!" This goes on for 4 quarters.
The Primary Read. Than you for giving props to the greatest NFL powerback ever! When you get ready to produce another football highlight reel..will you consider using my movie soundtrack song for the background music. Thank you
Earl Campbell would be able to walk today if it wasn't for Astro Turf. It really was criminal to allow our hero athletes to perform on and be slammed into concrete cushioned by little more than a membrane of vulcanized silicone. I was only a teenager for half of the '70s, and even I feel guilty...
Damn 70s football was so much better the hits the blocking hurt many teams but dam Earl was hurting team's I mean all players I seen a lot of the men limping off the fleid hahaha
Bum Phillips is the worst thing that ever happened to Campbell. Campbell needed to be protected from himself, no more than 25 carries per game, and he would have lasted years longer. A coach like Parcels would have won 4-5 super bowls with a player like Campbell
Lmfao, that one yard touchdown run at the beginning of the video *"was the epitome"* of both, the running style, and the career of Earl Campbell! And as for the that player (the linebacker or strong safety that stood between him & the endzone) that he *"Power Lifted",* to score! Little, did he know, that one day, he *"too",* would be enshrined into the Hall of Fame! Except that, unlike Earl, *"he would be in that video clip that goes into the Hall of Fame, with the in-going Hall of Famer!"* 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Dude in the Miami game keeps saying “amazing speed for a big man”...Id say the announcer has a very limited vocabulary for a professional narrator...terrible
Earl is one of my all time favorite running backs. This highlight reel is an amazing piece of work that I can now share with my grandsons. Thank you.
This is awesome, and why I make these videos. Glad I could be of service

Left more bodies in his wake than any running back in NFL history.

My #1 favorite player of all time. I almost want to cry watching this.

Earl Campbell is a great man & great football player.
Beyond just the highlights, this vid shows his dominance over top defenses, on every down. Never seen anyone like him since.
@Coogan dude you are a hating troll! You are on everyone comment's with the same BS.move along would ya?
What a power house,I love youBIG EARL CAMPBELL

@@travishendrix7026 Riggins as well as Jim Brown. But Campbell is on top on my list.
Thanks for posting this. The great Earl Campbell!
Big, fast and tough as they ever made em

Dion Sanders would be saying my hamstring if he sees earl Campbell running his way
Amazing how he gets up on his own almost every time.
Best extended highlights around! Nicely done. Thanks!
Thanks dude

When the Southwest conference was something special.
Howard Cosell was awesome to listen to

Frank Gifford keeps saying "amazing speed for a big man"???
Amazing speed period!!
This is awesome
damn, he ran that counter tre like none other
WOW!!!!

I refuse to believe he only weighed 230.
The Defense:

ok

18:05. He literally knocked a man totally unconscious
Those pads made guys look like juggernauts. Nowadays they are smaller and lighter allowing more agility and speed while offering the same protection.

I was only a teenager for half of the '70s, and even I feel guilty...
Campbell was 227lbs and Derrick Henry is 245lbs and running away from defenders. Incredible that that's even a possibility.
I see Jonathan Taylor resembling this man in many ways
they ran this guy into the ground..
Titans doing same with Derick Henry its a shame
I wanted to watch more
Damn 70s football was so much better the hits the blocking hurt many teams but dam Earl was hurting team's I mean all players I seen a lot of the men limping off the fleid hahaha

3Rd and two or 4Th and 1.... No one one could stop Campbell... it migh
Earl Campbell was a classier man than Derrick Henry
Amazing how he gets up on his own almost every time.
