“All bets are off” I personally think that Travis is bringing in some of his favorite one shot characters for a few episodes at a time and somehow killing them off or having them leave. I still think there’s a very big possibility his “true” PC could be The Anger and that’s why Matt set it up so they won’t be able to find him for a while. Either way though I’ll be happy, Chetney seems to be loads of fun!!!
@@Luboffin I'm thinking the trademark is just them dotting i's and crossing t's. "Chetney" coming back right before Christmas, seems too coincidental. I'm thinking Chetney is another short-termer (3-5 episodes), and Travis is just going through a few of his one-shoters until we get to "The Anger", who will come in when Robbie leaves, settling the party into the final form. I think that will happen at the end of January, and the week off that the main campaign will take each month will be filled with an "NCSIS: New Yorleangeles" style spin off, with Robbie leaving to join that cast.
Part of me is disappointed that we were wrong about Travis's character, but at the same time, I love that he's playing a character that's the complete opposite of what we've come to expect from him. And he plays funny old men so well. And I know Robbie wasn't in the group shots, but I'm hoping his brief appearance in the opening titles means we'll see a good deal more of him. Wouldn't be surprised if they also have a version of the title sequence without him, though. But the biggest takeaway from this episode - don't you dare kill Laudna or FCG before I find out WTF is really up with that!
I agree! It’s fun to be surprised and I was very pleasantly surprised, it’s not at all what I expected. Can’t wait to see how Chetney will be integrated into the party
Robbie isn't in the final shot or any of the roundtable group shots, so I'm pretty sure that confirms that he's temporary, which is a shame imo. He had the introduction shot with his name, which is cool, but if you look at it, that scene is pretty short (like 2 or 3 seconds) and he's on his own, which probably means that it was edited in by shortening one or two scenes around his. That way, it's easy to remove him from the opening when he eventually leaves the table.
@@envytee9659 Additionally, if they want to have other medium- to long-term guests, it'd be easy enough take an hour, take them to wardrobe, put a green screen behind them, and put together a five-second clip to insert into the opening.
@@envytee9659 I think that might just mean he's not a permanent addition as a player but is going to be here for the duration of c3. At least I hope that's the case. He's great.
@@monosito59 So you mean as if he is a permanent Campaign 3 addition, but won't be in future campaigns, unlike the core cast? Yeah, that's certainly a real possibility. Although this opening itself is only for campaign 3 (and will probably be replaced by a 2nd opening later on) so even if Robbie was C3 only, it would still make sense to have him star a large role for the opening if he was sticking around the entire time.
My thought about the letter Ashton got was now that Travis is back to the table Robbie's time is numbered. Having Ashton get the letter creates an opening for when its time for Robbie to leave.
I'm not convinced that the intro is related to the campaign. But who knows, i'm open to being wrong. After all, it's not like the 80's intro had much to do with that campaign, either. Sure, you can or could draw tangential clues out of the intro to find coincidental parallels, but if that's what was going on, you might as well take it that the appearance of Matt in a non-dungeon-masterial role in the intro could just as well be seen as a hint that Matt would be abandoning his role as the DM for the campaign - which I really don't think they would "reveal" that way.
@@TheRawrnstuff It opens on a jungle map that has 6 of the characters minis actually on it, pans up to Matt who points to a player, then goes back into the map as it transitions to a jungle set with the cast on it. Matt there with them can just represent an NPC thats guiding them.
my hubby and i think that it's a generic opening so they can play other systems and not just d&d. notice how d&d beyond is not a sponsor like last campaign.
Matt was using a spitting mimic stat block from Rime of the Frostmaiden, which is basically a giant mimic with a 9d6 acid spit attack. though augmented to attack multiple targets at once.
Robbie had a side conversation with Matt that confirmed that the person Orym and Laudna were tailing was probably Cyrus. And Cyrus was probably the one member that was staring at them the episode before.
Yes! The "Rude" Corsiar was definitely Cyrus, Dorian's brother. He was probably staring because he was in shock Dorian was there, especially based off of their conversation in Episode 6. I had suspected that would be the case when the Corsiar had been staring at Dorian in the first place, since it just seemed so fitting, especially considering the tidbit that was mentioned about Dorian and Cyrus, and "when they would be caught in a lie".
This is truly a king troll move by Travis. Love it haha My personal theory about the anger is that they’ll be a werewolf and possibly gift/curse one of the party members with lycanthropy. Orym is my thought. Moon tattoo. Hound like nose of the anger. Lumas twins. All signs point to… where? Wolves?
i really like that theory! i think it would be pretty friggen cool! i kinda like the idea that another player gets to be a werewolf and travis doesn't. that would be funny.
There's still hope! Maybe Travis' character, Chetney, will mutli-class into a BloodHunter Lycanthrope down the line, becoming a cool shady old man, who can turn into the Tasmanian devil when he gets really riled up :)
I do wonder if this intro is "temporary" just like the original C2 intro was. It too showed the players not their characters and we had that for months. Once the characters were more established they made a character into, they may do that again.
Potentially! I'd be happy if they kept this one though, I really loved it! It also makes sense because if anything happens to the characters they won't need to edit in new ones.
@@Luboffin the words "the renegade was used when it showed Robbie in the intro....he could be back and forth just like Ashley's character...he could be working on something that he has previous contracts with....I honestly think he will be a continuous character in future campaigns...he just needs to get his ducks in a row before that happens.
Shiny day to ya, predictions ahoy: 1) How long before the inevitable awkward meeting between Luc Brenatto and the gnome who [probably] made him vulnerable to fire? God, the absolute stones on Travis, well played. Given the nature of Matt's DMing style, Inquisitive or Mastermind might be stronger subclasses than on your average table, much like Keen Mind was a strong feat for Caleb last campaign. 2) I was looking through highlights of the first episodes before watching, and it struck me that no-one's had a really BAD reaction to FCG. No uncanny valley-style reaction slaps, no instinctive 'WHAT THE IN THE NINE HELLS ARE YOU' responses - potentially a stretch, but could there be something inside FCG that generates good cheer artificially? 3) Ashton's hammer is made of glass, and it does weird stuff to things it hits. Ashton's also got the source of his weird stuff on one side of his dome for all to see - did he MAKE his hammer out of his own brains? #justtaliesinthings
In response to the thought about Ashton's hammer: Holy shit, that's quite a thought. But also...the hammer's head looks kinda greenish on the mini, from what I could tell, and while I know that's Ashton's color, it's also the color of residuum. Another connection to Whitestone, or just the stuff somehow getting distributed f*cking EVERYWHERE?
travis' character is such a troll. "I'll play another older character, who has close connections with a one-off character I loved playing before, and I'll play a rogue with good intelligence because the party needs someone to open doors and needs someone with a brain cell". trolling the fans and the cast at the same time! Chetney also has very similar vibes to Sprigg who Deren de Paul played towards the end of C1. wouldn't be surprised if Chetney was an arcane trickster like Sprigg was, and also Twiggy in C2! Just a hint - I think catching up on C1 if you haven't already done so, will really help understanding what's going on so far with backstories, especially Laudna's and Orym's
@@rantdmc I think soulknife tbh, they get some cool stuff at 3rd level that he just hasn't used yet. Also more telepathy in this campaign would be hilarious
Considering, he's playing a character from a Christmas one-shot with Christmas is literally around the corner, I don't think he's Travis's character either
The name Chetney was trademarked by Critical Role a few days ago along with the other c3 PC names. Bertrand wasn’t. That makes me think he is pretty permanent.
I agree, I think Robbie is likely to be recurring, like Ashley, but Robbie is not a member of critical role, hence him not being in the group shot. Also LOVE Travis so much with his Chetney! I need old man travis as much as possible!
Let's not confuse "recurring" with "contractually committed to a network TV show across the country". I presume Ashley would not have been so "recurring" had it not been for "ABC's Blindside".
@@JustinSIsTank oh yes apologies. Also ashley is a core part of the team in owning and running critical role. I'd say Robbie would be classed as a hired cast member rather than an owner like Ashley and the rest of crit role are
actually really like this, it seems like travis is really enjoying these sort of characters, which was what i was worried about if he was going to play a cool, more of a straight lace character, happy for travis embracing this sort of chaos, haha
I'll enjoy Chetney for the time being, and it'll be great to have Travis at the table again, but I'm still gonna wait until we meet The Anger before I rule out that he's Travis' C3 character.
The fact that the name Chetney has been trademarked but there aren't any other names pending makes me pretty confident that Chetney is sticking around for the long haul
@@Luboffin It could be a ploy, or not, maybe it is legit, and in that case, it'll certainly be interesting. I just think there's a pattern here, bringing in his old One Shot character, then bringing in basically another one shot character but changing the name slightly. It defiantly seems to have troll written all over it. But I could be wrong. Again, I'll wait until we meet the Anger to rule it out. But look at how Travis is giggling to himself the whole time, like when you're attempting to prank someone but you can't stop laughing in the lead up.
Sam's joke about breaking the fourth wall is actually a little more spot-on than many realize. Because the mimic was actually the fourth wall of the alley if you think about it. Anyway, by theory: I think that the furniture coming to life, Dugger's transformation, and the wall being a mimic are all actually related to the brunestone (not sure if I'm spelling/pronouncing that right) smuggling. I believe that whoever is smuggling it is trying to weaponize it in some way, shape, or form. The explosion of the cart may have been a test to see if a bomb could be made to 'call for reinforcements' out of nearby objects. And the mimic may have been an actual false wall put up 'by the mason guild' with the stones embedded that turned it into a mimic-type creature. Dugger? I think he may have just been experimented on or completely replaced by an experimental ooze made by whoever is behind all of it.
No idea if anyone has thought of this before, but as a source for the wall, anyone considered Artagan yet? We know for a fact that he does hate the theater...!
I hope that Robbie stays though as he just brings so much to the table but I also understand that these campaigns go on for a LONG time and some people just cannot sign up for that with their work schedules in the entertainment industry. I also just hope that this is the last character Travis has for this because I do not want to get attached again as I liked Bertie lmfao. I'm a new follower of CR though so I am not sure how common it is to switch characters (pretty sure it's not common though?)
It is uncommon for the players to switch characters. There was only one switch for story reasons (not giving spoilers) in the whole of the last campaign. So it is highly likely that this is Travis' permanent new character.
They also made a point multiple time to expect the unexpected with this campaign though, so I really wouldn’t put it past them to have a few more character switches before landing on a permanent one.
I hope Robbie stays too, or is at least a recurring guest. It isn't common for them to switch characters. I'd be very surprised if Travis switches again given the trademark of Chetney
@@tammyw-w4294 i really really doubt this is his last character, we know Travis has said he wanted his character to meet the party at a later time and i don't think this is late enough. I also doubt he would want to play a "joke" character for the rest of the entire campaign. My guess is that his new character is gonna stay with the party for 3-4 episodes before he leaves or dies and then one or two episodes later, we will finally meet his "real" character
@@F-aber Well each to their own opinions. I'm not sure why on earth they would bother trademarking a character who would only be around for 3 episodes though. I personally think that is very unlikely.
Ever noticed how whenever Fresh Cut Grass talks about his previous companions, he always calls them "their associate" and "the creations of their associate"? Is FCG dancing around the fact that he is not one of the creations but has different origins?
On twitter I joked "If Travis’ character IS ‘The Anger’, I hope it’s either a Werewolf or a Gnome … or a werewolf gnome…" Well, I got the GNOME part right lol (and hopefull the Gnome Werewolf part too!)
Seriously love this content. Next week I need to get into that Discord to chat with everyone live!! Not enough of my friends watch and I have no one to nerd out with over this amazing show.
I think your probably right with Robbie and the credits. To me it, if I were Robbie I'd bill myself as a guest. That way I had an option to leave for extended periods for multiple reasons
I think Travis is gonna be bringing in a few of his one-shot characters! Perhaps Lawrence Lorelei (Liam's one-shot: Song of the Lorelei), Macaroni Samsonite (Darrington Brigade), maybe even Tarvis (Critical Role Extra - The Return of Liam!) There are a few others that are out of canon, but so was Chutney, so yeah all bets are off. Travis' other characters include; Sydney Hopkins Trivelpiece, Skak Scar-Artist, Lokhor Windfallow, Bunder, Captain Bentley Badger, Reverend Mason, Cameron Garrett gunnery sergeant... The character of Travis Willingham from "Liam's Quest" and "Liam's Quest: Full Circle".
Your theory about Robbie's spot in the intro about that being the one where they swap it out for other guest stars I think is accurate. It wouldn't be too difficult to set up the Master Video file with a specific chunk of it that could be removed and replaced with another clip, especially if you have all of the post-production filters saved as a preset that you could slap onto the new clip as needed. As for the jungle aesthetic, remember that Jrusar is surrounded by jungle and who knows, maybe a fair portion of the game is going to be centered his the jungle regions of Marquet.
People have also pointed out to me that Jrusar is surrounded by jungle which I completely missed haha. For some reason I thought it was surrounded by a desert!
The reason why the intro was a jungle theme is because parts of Marquet, and Jrusar in particular, are in a jungle. He's mentioned it a few times when describing things like the sewage system that "empties out on the jungle floor below."
Apologies for my scratchy voice, I have a bit of a cold at the moment! Thanks for watching everyone and let me know your theories in the comments! If you want to make silly bets with me make sure you join my discord for more CR chat: @ discord.gg/bjVBSavXeR
Take care! It may be a placebo, but I've found that if some combination of honey, garlic, and lemon (generally in teas an such) doesn't make your throat feel better; your throat's not gonna feel better...
OH GOD ITS GOD DAMN CHUTNEY (I guess chetnuy now) with a thematic timing of Christmas coming soon. He’s said he’s looking for a friend. Possibly an actual friend or he means Santa for revenge but doesn’t want to admit it’s anything devious
Brunstone !!!(not sure on spelling sorry) I think the orbs are made of that and are used for controlling things and I thought the intro style was to do with where they sit each week (named the tavern of tales) it gave me a tomb raider/ Indiana feel also Laudna’s patron -I’m honestly hoping it’s Raishan I love her
I am always so excited when I see you upload!! Amazing video as always. Everyone has a good point about Laudna's patron being a red herring, it's certainly possible. Also Travis' new character threw me (I was a firm believer of the Blood Hunter class) but Chetney is awesome. Although his stat distribution is really weird, with Strength and Intelligence being his highest (the only class I can think of benefiting from that is if you play a Strength based Blood Hunter). But I am not good at remembering all the different subclasses. Or Chetney has an entirely new subclass like Ashton and Fresh Cut Grass.
@@Luboffin Oh, good point! I haven't even considered multiclassing. Order of the Lycan might still be on the table then, since it is the more Strength based one, but you need a high Wisdom to make use of one of it's feats. Either way, just like Dorian's odd arrangement for a bard, it be exciting to see!
I kind of also like the Vecna theory. Much of the charactor art has something going on with one hand. I know C1 had Vecna in it, but I dont know what came of Vecna proper. Joe may be returning if this theory has legs though. Not really sure being Laudna's patron really aligned with his goals though. I feel like a similar play to Fjord & Ukatoa is poor taste, and thats kind of the only direction i see that relationship going.
@@KinzQuest So many people wondering FCG will be the one to turn against the party (for some reason this campaign has a lot of betrayal theories floating around), but what if it was Laudna (due to her patron) or Dorian? The Vecna theory is interesting and I like it too. Especially since there is a lot of Campaign 1 elements being thrown around (which I can catch thanks to Luboffin).
@@suicunetobigaara ya I'm not sure whats up with FCG and glitching out. That could be a wild backstory if its some sort of programing/memory issue. Im kind of leaning twords Sam just not having to deal with backstory stuff, and FCG is pretending or avoiding. Hes kind of gone easy mode with money management and backstory. He has a lot more spells and personality to manage this time i feel though. I hope that CR doesnt do a big interparty betrayal. I feel like a lot of home games would mess that up badly by trying to do the CR thing. Would make for an awesome story though, that i would want to see.
Pretty sure the "orbs" _are_ some sort of control device. My personal theory is that someone is trying to sow chaos and disorder in the city; that the furniture attack, Dugger and the Shade Creepers, and the wall Mimic are all related.
At the end of C3, E7, one of the players made a joke that Travis is playing "the Drummer in Spinal Tap" (basically that he's there to play a bunch of short term characters that keep dying off). I genuinely hope this is the case. I really want him to just keep popping up as random characters a few episodes at a time only to die off. Also, I hope he keeps going to the "one shot characters I've played" well for them, as sort of a wink and a nod to the fans that have either been there awhile or have gone back to view them after being pulled in to the critterverse.
During the introductory portion of the first episode, it was stated that the city they are currently in is next to a jungle that sprawls over the continent of Marquette. My guess, Matt probably thinks a good portion of this campaign will be spent in the Marquesion jungle, probably prompted by some story beat/plot hook he has planned to get the PCs out of the city and into the wilderness of the jungle. Or they could just be playing up a bit about where the players are in the world and every new arc that starts in a new environment could be a tweaked version of the intro to show where the players currently are in the world.
Another neat thing about Chetney is his stats. It looks like his primary stat is Strength! It's actually a great nod to understanding how Sneak Attack works. Most people think Sneak Attack requires your Dexterity stat, but it actually requires a Finesse weapon, and Finesse only allows you to choose between Strength and Dexterity for attacks/damage. So Travis could be using Chetney's woodworking tools as daggers, which are Finesse weapons!
I love how in past campaigns, marisha's character has dated the party goth, and in this campaign she *is* the party goth. And in past campaigns, travis' character had beef with the party rogue, and in this campaign, he *is* the party rogue. Sweet vindication.
For the intro I'm pretty sure its jungle theme is because the area they're in is all jungle. While the spire city is up out of it, if I remember right the entire area they're in is jungle! I can only guess they'll be traveling about the jungle floor and all the fun that comes with it for a while.
*Betrand dies* Fans: I can't wait to see Travis' real character, I didn't think he'd play an old man for an entire campaign. Travis: I'll do it F'n again!
This is my first time watching your content and I just wanna say thank you, I find your video really comforting in audio, and I appreciated the in depth look at different theories, and I'm definitely going to join your discord! (I think checking the copyright is I great idea, sneaky and an easy way to get answer, awesome job)
May I point out the illithid creature from your last Crit Role video, might be able to look like a wall with the help of a few masons, it has tentacle-like extremities, sorta slimy, mixed from various oozes, puddings, and gelatinous creatures might have acid spit... Just saying, that alley fight might have been set up with that very creature. And it could easily have been the dwarf that came up out of the hole and fought the crew previously too.
2 small halves of an orb on opposite sides of monster.....Pokémon ball ? Your Christmas tree leans a bit, is that because of the squirrel climbing about in it ? Looking forward to seeing what Travis is about ... Great Episode ! 😎
100% think that the reason there's so much interplay between C1 and C3 is bc of the animated series because if gives them an opportunity to lore drop C1 stuff with people having an accessible way to get the context for that instead of having to go through the campaign itself. Also think that we are going to see Laudna in Legend of VM, this has absolutely been in the works since Amazon bought the series.
That tattoo on the arm reminds me of that old kind of military tattoos. Considering that "Chetney" has lived a long life, it's described as having muscled arms and it's a rogue I would bet that has to do with some old comrade. Also, when I first saw the official art I even red KIA. Realizing my mistake I now think that it might mean something like Rest In ... or some other acronym, instead of just Ria. We will see...
Once again, I bring information from Current Kick! Apparently, the stats and mini used for the wall creature match a spitting mimic. Here my interjection, we don't *know* that the House sent the crew, just that the House usually handles infrastructure repair. If the construction crew was phoney one, they may not be involved at all Also, Travis showing up and immediately getting the biggest laugh is super on brand, I'm very glad he's back.
Hahaha yes it makes perfect sense - I don't know why but I thought the city they are in was surrounded by desert. I clearly didn't pay enough attention in episode 1 😂
RTA: Ruidis, Tharizsdun (or Tiamat or Torog), Avandra Prison of betrayer God, betrayor God, prime diety of chance. And change. (sign for people who plan to help break the betrayer Gods free.) If I'm right, we are dealing with at least 2 characters fully aligned with evil, and at least a few who are borderline.
To your point about the jungle theme, the spires are above a jungle and dugger travels through tunnels which I believe will end up going to the jungle. Love the video BTW I'm first time viewer and commenter.
If you remember there was the narrative telephone game where Chutney was confirmed cannon from Travis's round in that game. I do not know how close Chutney will be mirrored onto Chetney. If this story Travis told is confirmed to be also apart of Chetney's story, then we could have a character that is finally connected in some way to the Mighty Nine from the C3 group. (Due to many in the group connected to Vox Mochina)
I still don't think Robbie is just a guest. I think they will probably do an anime intro eventually. Great video. In my live stream after the show we had almost %30 guessing he was going to be a rogue. We did think more ranged though.
I think that Dorian will go back to his family (will probably be part of the story to deal with some stuff there before he goes back), but then will regularly make a comeback, bc the crew will make his home(town) a base, kinda like Whitestone I’m C1. They‘ll go back there often, so we‘ll get to see him often. As for Travis I can’t imagine Chetney being is ‚permanent‘ character. Legit doesn’t have to mean permanent. But they said to expect the unexpected. So maybe he‘ll keep switching characters? Or he will be The Anger after all, and it‘ll just take more time until we get there, so another in between character was needed? Maybe we‘re putting too much weight on the trademark thing. Maybe Bertrand was already trademarked from the oneshot but Chutney obvs wasn’t so they needed to that for him. That doesn’t mean they won’t trademark another name later on!
For the Intro Theme, i think the story may get to it. Maybe i remember wrong but when they throw the coin down the hole it was what 1200ft deep? That was alsmost at ground level Matt said sooo i think the creatures or what ever lurks may come from the jungle or a ruin there that would explain the intro pretty well in my eyes
So I do believe (or at least I want to!) that Chetney is Travis's long term character, but it would be fun to see those one shot greatest hits. I mean, a reimagined Macaroni Samsonite would be pretty amazing. We have heard Matt keep saying that Travis is a troll so who knows! And with campaign 3, all bets are off! So I guess we wait and see. Additionally, with Chetney, I do wonder if he's going to be as curmudgeny with his employers... Lord Esteros best no cross him and the team best not take him for granted if Chutney's revenge streak crosses over into Chetney character arch. Time will tell!
I think the jungle theme means perhaps they will go to the jungle area below the spire. Maybe a small character split up where they search the jungle to find the others?
Was excited in seeing "Chetney" be introduced. My first thoughts were also that he was going to be a temporary character. But after seeing Matt's post that Chutney is different than Chetney. My thoughts on it: the characer is essentially Chutney from the christmas special, except names will be altered to make it cannon for Exandria. (Such as maybe it wasnt Santa that he killed, but his former master or a rival carpanter)
Didn't finish the episode so not watching the whole vid yet. Just wanted to say. Called it!!! So many people were so sure he was the anger. I never believed he was for a moment. I even made a comment on one of your last videos saying such as well
Having thought about it overnite, Chutney Poc O'Pea has been trademarked so that is Travis character. What IF they meet The Anger who is a werewolf and Chutney gets Infected...
Wild theory here. I think there is a possibility that not only will we get extended stays but we could also maybe see PCs leave for a while. Chetney seems awesome. However, he does seem to have a possible end, with the friend he needs to find. So, maybe he will leave and then return in the future. Meanwhile, The Anger comes in as a character for Travis. We could also, I think, maybe see this with other players. Like maybe, Ashton has to leave to deal with some for a bit and Talison brings in a new temp character.
I honestly think, and hope, Robbie will be a permanent member. I think the first few weeks were a trial to see if he meshed with those not in EXU campaign (marisha, Taliesin, Travis, and Sam) and the fact he does so well means he will be in it for the long haul. Wouldn't be the first time they had 8 at the table. Though the idea of him coming in and out like Ashley did probably has some merit
The cast absolutely love Robbie I believe that a lot of critical role fans love his presence with the group and the dynamic chemistry that's happening before us ♥️ I really did enjoy the CSI investigating episode so to speak. We are seven episodes in and they have yet to come up with the team name. I do believe the reason why the intro took place in a jungle is because in the campaign that setting is in a jungle.
@@Luboffin I rewatched campaign 3 episode 1 Matt versus intro you're correct there are surrounded by desert this in this continent but in certain places there are oasis and where they are right now it is a jungle legit so kind of excited to be in a jungle environment. Keep up the good work you're so talented and if you haven't watched campaign one I suggest you do some watching on that because let me tell you Sam regal is epic in that 🤗😁😃
Im still holding out that Chetney is a place holder for Travis’ true PC the main reason I think this is cause it was kind of a “oh Travis is here again” wasn’t the intro I expected after how they were talking about Travis coming in later like an epic JRPG character, 6 sessions isn’t that much later imho we haven’t even seen the conclusion of the first story arc. And to add to Robbie being in the intro I did notice he wasn’t in the final line up or in any of the shots at the table unless they recorded that long before they added Robbie? Either way I’m also still holding out hope that Robbie is here for the long haul he was such an amazing addition to the table and his chemistry with the others is so good. You would think he’s been playing with them since the beginning
Seeing that it was very gloomy and that there is a jungle below Jrusar. The intro is perfect... Also there is one WotC 5E book that takes place in a jungle that has a certain someone who appears on the DMG (and has ties to VM/C1, which many things seem to have in C3).
Hahaha yes it makes perfect sense - I don't know why but I thought the city they are in was surrounded by desert. I clearly didn't pay enough attention in episode 1 😂
In regards to the trademark for Chetney, it doesn't necessarily mean anything, Dorian Storm is also trademarked and Robbie is still still listed as a guest. So it could go either way, for both of them.
What if the trademarking of Chetney is just so they can make Christmas merch with him on it? XD Travis said he wanted his main character to appear later in the show for some reason. These episodes are still the tutorial level, so I doubt it is Travis' final character. Probably using another troll character, or gnome in this case, to fill the gap at Matt's suggestion and fleshing out Chutney to a more usable form as Chetney because of the fun he had with him before. And the reason The Anger isn't seen yet and could still be Travis' main character; He's still 'recovering', right? Maybe he's getting used to his lycanthropy that he got infected with after the attack, story wise I mean. And the reason Travis can't play him as a character yet is because of his multiclass Jeckyll/Hyde build needing a certain level before it can be used. I just don't think episode 7, side quest 2 is 'later in the campaign'. We've had the furniture incident as their meeting point, the dwarf and his children as a first big encounter, and now this situation at the theatre. You can't plan the lenght of an episode beforehand, but you can see timeline wise what would need to happen in the mean time to level up the party enough to get to The Anger's level. That might also explain why both Lord Ehsteross and the Corsairs told the group to wait on more intell before continuing the main leads; they need to level more. Hence we have this many conversations, because Matt is trying to keep the party in a small area with a set line of quests with nothing else to go on to distract them. Imogen and Laudna need papers to get into the academy, Lord Eshteross tells them to wait. Ashton leads the party to a more shady group for a new questline by Lord Ehsteross' urging, then the Corsairs tell them to wait. No direct clues left at the sticky house, so they return to Lord Ehsteross. No clues left in the alley besides the 'masons' building a mimic instead of doing repairs. Next step: Spire by Fire, probably back to Lord Eshteross for his connections and guidance on how to approach the city council or something to ask about those masons. Or who knows Chetney brings in a specific questline they can focus on, meant to level the party. It just feels so closed off compared to previous campaigns. Every turn they make they have hardly any information, leads or physical trails, and need to wait..
@@Luboffin Well if they don't bring in a "That crown has _literally_ gone to your head" Aimee at one point or another then that's just wasted potential... ;^)
@@Luboffin I think we will see Aimee and opal again for sure, I also think we could even see Dariax again since they teased the whole guest story teller thing and how all bets are off this campaign
I called it. Not the gnome based on a Santa Elf (no one is getting that w/o inside info), but I called the rogue part. The group sorely needs one. The description of "The Anger" doesn't feel right for Travis, at this stage. Not ruling anything out, but strong doubts, there. Vecna vs Lady Briarwood... Maybe... If you're working through C1, I don't want to spoil. There is a hook that could lead down that path,.. but it would probably require an old "friend" to come back.
Pro tip on taking bets in the future. Make sure your opponent doesn’t have an open win condition. You were only going to win if one very specific scenerio happened, meanwhile your opponent would win upon a literal infinite number of scenarios, as long as it wasn’t your one scenario.
I think this campaign/arc undertone so far is magic is messing up or someone is screwing with magic 1. furniture attacking 2. The shade creepers changing 3. The mimic wall
I feel like the jungle aspect of the intro probably is more them not wanting to repeat the same genre as the first campaigns live action intro. It's probably more that it's just different enough. Like you'll notice that aside from Liam, who is just sort of playing this every man type guy, no one is really playing their character.
I'm not convinced Travis's character is his final one but it's still great for him to be able to try different classes and characters for a bit. I feel like I remember them saying the cast might operate differently this campaign? Maybe this is an example of that.
I find it mildly suspicious that ‘old’ for a gnome is like 400, give or take a century, and Chetney is 100 something. Could just be Travis not knowing that, but, I dunno. Also seemed to be confusion on gnome height, so, eh, probably nothing. It does make me wonder if Chetney is temporary, what with the details not necessarily seeming nailed down, and his appearance so close to Christmas. However, those trade marks are pretty indisputable. Also hoping Robbie comes back. Not being in the group shots makes me rather certain he’ll be leaving. He may have some other contracts and responsibilities to fulfill, and maybe after that they’ll invite him back for something more permanent? Slap a revise on the intro, or a new one? Embrace that chaotic eight person combat? Can only hope.
The moment I saw Travis tweeting this week I somehow felt he is gonna show up 😂 Also I’m pretty positive that Chetney is his permanent character, as they trademarked his name earlier in November as you said. I do hope Robbie stays , but it’s probably a complicated process - salary wise and so forth , so I think he will disappear, maybe come back home with his brother or what not, but a part of me hopes he stays through out this campaign.
I love the Chemistry that Robbie has with the rest of the crew. I suspect that Travis is just doing his own version of Suicide Squad. Tying up loose ends for the one shot characters. I expect Chetney to hang around until Crtimas and then move on.
if Chetney is a woodworker and carpenter by trade (on top of being a rogue, but I am ready for wood-chisel flavored daggers for sneak attacks) I'd say RTA may be for his company. Royal Trade Authority or some similar. Chutney was a loyal and longstanding workshop figure until, well, opportunity came along. Perhaps with woodcraft still having its place in Exandria this cosmic clone will have a far more loyal standing to his employment.
One thing I also forgot to mention I am so excited that Travis and Robbie are sitting next to each other at the table yo all I can't wait I'm so excited 🤗😂🤦🏾♂️💀♥️
About Laudna’s patron (BIG CAMPAIGN 1 SPOILERS)… Delilah served Vecna as a servant/priestess/something, so the fact that she sounds a little like Vecna might be a nod to her taking on some of his power. Plus, Vecna is the god of both necromancy (which relates to Delilah “living on” after death) and secrets (relating to Delilah mentioning secrets when talking to Laudna). At a stretch, Matt could be setting up a return of Vecna, but I think that’s unlikely, ‘cause it could kinda invalidate the events of C1. Instead, I think it’s simply that Delilah has managed to reconstitute herself with some amount of Vecna’s power and is now a minor deity of her own.
Travis really said "If any of you try to romance me this campaign, it will say a LOT more about you than it does me!" Lmao
Chetney is going to be great I think! I reckon the trademark alone points to this being Travis' main character and we won't be seeing another switch.
YES
This is my bet, too, Mazana!
My theory is that The Anger will be the next guest player and Dorian will leave the group in the episode before The Anger is introduced.
Having Ashton get the letter creates an opening for when its time for Robbie to leave.
jungle theme is probably because matt said that theres a jungle surrounding the spires
Good call!
Ah thank you! I don't have that book so I missed that stat block
Robbie had a side conversation with Matt that confirmed that the person Orym and Laudna were tailing was probably Cyrus. And Cyrus was probably the one member that was staring at them the episode before.
Omg doh can’t believe I missed that!
I thought they were confirming that it was the Corsair who had been rude to Dorian?
@@guiltriple The way Robbie asked made me think that he deduced that that "rude" Corsair WAS his brother.
Ashton's note was an eviction notice. That's why they left the room immediately.
lol
I know that's supposed to be funny, That's solid actually. The question is, who's the landlord?
@@givemeanaxe he has more than enough money to pay rent

This is truly a king troll move by Travis. Love it haha
My personal theory about the anger is that they’ll be a werewolf and possibly gift/curse one of the party members with lycanthropy. Orym is my thought. Moon tattoo. Hound like nose of the anger. Lumas twins. All signs point to… where? Wolves?
Yeah I am hoping that we still get some werewolf story lines because werewolves are cool
Or.. orym already IS a werewolf...
i really like that theory! i think it would be pretty friggen cool! i kinda like the idea that another player gets to be a werewolf and travis doesn't. that would be funny.
There's still hope! Maybe Travis' character, Chetney, will mutli-class into a BloodHunter Lycanthrope down the line, becoming a cool shady old man, who can turn into the Tasmanian devil when he gets really riled up :)
OMG a Tasmanian devil bahahahaah I love that
I love it when the community has gotten so big that they are looking at public records (trademarks) to confirm theories and such.
Nothing can escape the critter sleuths!
Shiny day to ya, predictions ahoy:
1) How long before the inevitable awkward meeting between Luc Brenatto and the gnome who [probably] made him vulnerable to fire?
I would be surprised if we had another arcane trickster, as we had twiggy and Nott last campaign

Travis: I'm playing an old man, but don't worry it's not my main character
Also Travis: I'm playing a small old man!
Considering, he's playing a character from a Christmas one-shot with Christmas is literally around the corner, I don't think he's Travis's character either
Matt tweeting that Travis wanted to give a “legit” spin to the character makes me believe that it is his permanent character
The name Chetney was trademarked by Critical Role a few days ago along with the other c3 PC names. Bertrand wasn’t. That makes me think he is pretty permanent.
Chetney is NOT from the Critmas one-shot
His name is CHETNEY not CHUTNEY
its chetney ( not chutney from one shot )
I agree, I think Robbie is likely to be recurring, like Ashley, but Robbie is not a member of critical role, hence him not being in the group shot. Also LOVE Travis so much with his Chetney! I need old man travis as much as possible!
Also bravo Awaken!!!
Same, Chetney is going to be so good! 💖
For sure! I think it's going to fit in really well with the very chaotic energy the party is giving off.
It was my first thought lol.
I kept thinking about Artagon and his deep hate for the theater too!
Bahahah wild if true

Honestly they deserve it 🤣
Ii... its... it... ... 😒... Its just a chair.

Ever noticed how whenever Fresh Cut Grass talks about his previous companions, he always calls them "their associate" and "the creations of their associate"? Is FCG dancing around the fact that he is not one of the creations but has different origins?
No, he's using the same language the Aeorian automaton used, probably because he's *probably* rebuilt from one.
On twitter I joked "If Travis’ character IS ‘The Anger’, I hope it’s either a Werewolf or a Gnome … or a werewolf gnome…"
Well, I got the GNOME part right lol (and hopefull the Gnome Werewolf part too!)
Seriously love this content. Next week I need to get into that Discord to chat with everyone live!! Not enough of my friends watch and I have no one to nerd out with over this amazing show.
It's a really good time!
I think your probably right with Robbie and the credits. To me it, if I were Robbie I'd bill myself as a guest. That way I had an option to leave for extended periods for multiple reasons
Yeah I'm hoping he will be a recurring guest at least!
I think Travis is gonna be bringing in a few of his one-shot characters! Perhaps Lawrence Lorelei (Liam's one-shot: Song of the Lorelei), Macaroni Samsonite (Darrington Brigade), maybe even Tarvis (Critical Role Extra - The Return of Liam!)
There are a few others that are out of canon, but so was Chutney, so yeah all bets are off.
Travis' other characters include; Sydney Hopkins Trivelpiece, Skak Scar-Artist, Lokhor Windfallow, Bunder, Captain Bentley Badger, Reverend Mason, Cameron Garrett gunnery sergeant... The character of Travis Willingham from "Liam's Quest" and "Liam's Quest: Full Circle".
I am CERTAIN that Travis’ “Chetney” is SOME KIND of Were-creature! With all that silvery hair coming out his ears tho? That would be hilarious!
Honestly I would be down for a gnome werewolf
it would be funny... but old ppl do have loads of ear hair. it's just a thing that happens as you age, specifically men.
My wonder is, if Chutney doesn't make it, will Travis play Goober from crash pandas? Lol
Bahaha can you imagine? 🤣
I just watched the intro, and I am 85% conviced they really just wanted to do an Indiana Jones / old school adventure serial homage
People have also pointed out to me that Jrusar is surrounded by jungle which I completely missed haha. For some reason I thought it was surrounded by a desert!
I've just gotten into your channel. Loving it!
Yay thank you! And welcome! 🥰
I thought the letter was a response to Ashton’s paid inquiry into information on Lord Eshtross.
Ooh good idea. Though in that case I wonder why they would redact so much of it
The reason why the intro was a jungle theme is because parts of Marquet, and Jrusar in particular, are in a jungle. He's mentioned it a few times when describing things like the sewage system that "empties out on the jungle floor below."

I’ll admit I haven’t had a chance to look at his stats 🤔 maybe he is planning on multiclassing at some point?
Considering how much Travis enjoyed playing rogues in one-shots, I'm not surprised.
I'm surprised he went with a canon version of Chutney.
Same, I was not expecting it at all
During the introductory portion of the first episode, it was stated that the city they are currently in is next to a jungle that sprawls over the continent of Marquette.
*Betrand dies*
Fans: I can't wait to see Travis' real character, I didn't think he'd play an old man for an entire campaign.
Travis: I'll do it F'n again!

I think the party were fighting a Roper, saw one in a D&D campaign a while back and the description matches up pretty well.
My DM friend told us that the Wall Mimic mini that was used is an “Icons of the Realms Snowbound Spitting Mimic”. Which is interesting.
If the construction crew was phoney one, they may not be involved at all
Also, Travis showing up and immediately getting the biggest laugh is super on brand, I'm very glad he's back.
The jungle theme of the new intro makes perfect sense when you realize that they are currently in the jungle...
Hahaha yes it makes perfect sense - I don't know why but I thought the city they are in was surrounded by desert. I clearly didn't pay enough attention in episode 1 😂
RTA: Ruidis, Tharizsdun (or Tiamat or Torog), Avandra
Prison of betrayer God, betrayor God, prime diety of chance. And change. (sign for people who plan to help break the betrayer Gods free.)
If I'm right, we are dealing with at least 2 characters fully aligned with evil, and at least a few who are borderline.
To your point about the jungle theme, the spires are above a jungle and dugger travels through tunnels which I believe will end up going to the jungle. Love the video BTW I'm first time viewer and commenter.
Thankyou so much - welcome! It's a pleasure to have you here ☺️
If you remember there was the narrative telephone game where Chutney was confirmed cannon from Travis's round in that game.
I wonder if Dorian will swap out with "the anger"
I even made a comment on one of your last videos saying such as well
Hehe yep you were right! Enjoy the rest of the episode!
Mazana i agree. It may also serve as a way to let guests fill in the gaps if Robby is on board for any length of time.
Soooo. I came upon this beautiful gem of a channel because of the theories!
Hooray! Welcome :)
The cast absolutely love Robbie I believe that a lot of critical role fans love his presence with the group and the dynamic chemistry that's happening before us ♥️
I really did enjoy the CSI investigating episode so to speak.
We are seven episodes in and they have yet to come up with the team name.
I do believe the reason why the intro took place in a jungle is because in the campaign that setting is in a jungle.
Yeah I don't know why I thought the spires were surrounded by desert, I clearly did not listen to the set up in episode 1 😂
This mimic had the spit attack of the 'Gibbering Mouther'. I looked it up during the episode since someone mentioned it in chat.
A few people in the comments said that it is the Spitting Mimic from Rime of the Frostmaiden!
Its so far back i doubt anyone remembers it at this point but Travis did hint at playing this character in an early c2 talks episode.
In regards to the trademark for Chetney, it doesn't necessarily mean anything, Dorian Storm is also trademarked and Robbie is still still listed as a guest. So it could go either way, for both of them.
I think the jungle intro is a reference to where the story is set sorta. I think it was referenced that at the base of the Spires.
Chetney does have "hair growing out of his ears" so I wonder if there is a chance he'd be a werewolf yet?
It would be pretty fun!
Or he’s just an old gnome lol
What if the trademarking of Chetney is just so they can make Christmas merch with him on it? XD
Travis said he wanted his main character to appear later in the show for some reason.
I have a theory. Now that the show is prerecorded, we will see more guest characters that will be around for multiple episodes.
Agreed - they can film several episodes at once now making it much easier for guests to jump in. Any ideas who we might see?
Also, hoping for this too
@@Luboffin Well if they don't bring in a "That crown has _literally_ gone to your head" Aimee at one point or another then that's just wasted potential... ;^)
@@Luboffin I think we will see Aimee and opal again for sure, I also think we could even see Dariax again since they teased the whole guest story teller thing and how all bets are off this campaign
TH-cam‘s algorithm recommended me the Christmas One-Shot two days before yesterday’s episode aired.
COINCIDENCE?! I THINK NOT!
THE ALGORITHM KNOWS ALL
I called it.
I theorize that Artagan is out there screaming at someone "I told you NO THEATER!"
I think this campaign/arc undertone so far is magic is messing up or someone is screwing with magic
1. furniture attacking
2. The shade creepers changing
3. The mimic wall
Ooo nice! Yeah it will be interesting seeing what the connecting themes will be
I wasn't wowed by the intro, it feels temporary, or at least I hope it is. Always nice to see a new video!
Wow really? The production value alone of this leads me to believe that it's the permanent one. And thanks for watching 😊
Amazing recap as always :)
Thankyou so much! 🥰
Theory, Chetney has wood working tools, did he make the enchanted furniture that attacked in EP1?
Oooo that would be very interesting
The moment I saw Travis tweeting this week I somehow felt he is gonna show up 😂
Also I’m pretty positive that Chetney is his permanent character, as they trademarked his name earlier in November as you said.
I personally want Robby to stay on for most of the campaign I love him being there so much
if Chetney is a woodworker and carpenter by trade (on top of being a rogue, but I am ready for wood-chisel flavored daggers for sneak attacks) I'd say RTA may be for his company.
About Laudna’s patron (BIG CAMPAIGN 1 SPOILERS)…
Delilah served Vecna as a servant/priestess/something, so the fact that she sounds a little like Vecna might be a nod to her taking on some of his power.
