I truly appreciate the professionalism of this vídeo. I made a looong trip with around Mexico with my 2001 Vstar. By the end of the trip the bike was not accelerating as it should, so I decided to give full maintenance. Long story short I found like 200gr of rust in the gas tank, replaced the 20 year old gas filter and found lots of rust at the bottom of the carburetors as well as some stuck needles. I cleaned everything as you recommended in another video but then I found that the gaskets were just too old and parched so gas started to leak from there 😔 unfortunately is very hard to find those pieces in Mexico so I ordered a replacement package from Amazon but i have to wait like 25 days for them to arrive. It's a horrible feeling not being able to use my bike and just watch it sitting in my garage 😔. Anyway watching your videos makes me feel more prepared for when the replacements arrive.
Hi there, this has been the most useful video I have seen. So thank you, but I have a problem. My signal wire is showing 5v like my live wire on the TPS connection. Do you know what could be causing this and what I need to do to resolve this? Thank you.
Friend, those screws in front on the bowls. I forgot to document how they were turned before unscrewing them. It's my first bike carburetor rebuild. Can you please help me. The screws under those wires on each bowl. The float bowl covers each has two screws. What's the relationship with them and what's the proper way to put them back in. I noticed they block off a hole
I just pulled down and cleaned a 650 carbs and now the bike starts and runs great but takes awhile to return to idle after you rev it I'm at a loss and input? Think it could be the tps?
I have Yamaha Drag Star 650. And i think that you may have set the wrong fuel level in the float chamber. In the manual, it is recommended to use (fuel level gauge YM 01312) a tube with a length of 44 cm and a outer diameter of 8mm. After loosen the drain screw some of the fuel from the float chamber flows into the long tube and the level in the float chamber should fall below the mark of 7.5-8.5mm. It is not specified in manual that you need to pump gasoline with a gas pump or keep the engine is turned on while make fuel level measurements. Without triggering the gas pump, the fuel level in the float chamber will not be raised while we make fuel level measurements, which means that the level before loosen drain screw must be higher than after fuel level gauge fills. May be exactly at the level of float chamber line. I'm not sure. Like you, I used the shortest possible tube. The short tube holds much less gasoline and the level in chamber at the time of measurement falls a little. So I make the fuel level too low by using a short tube. Fuel level i reduced to 6.5 mm below the mark, its minimum. The float is already at the bottom of the chamber, partially closing the needle valve. I don't think it's right. I have an assumption that the fuel level in the float chamber should be exactly at the level with the mark line, and the difference of 8 mm occurs precisely as a result of the flow of fuel into the measuring tube during measurement. My bike is in the same setup as yours and it doesn't work correctly. A strong dip when the throttle handle is turned sharply.
Is there a way to adjust these floats without having to reassemble the float bowls and disassemble them to make adjustments every time? It seems other carbs use a float height gauge when open on the work bench first. Does anyone know what that height should be if you tried it with this type of carb? The manual only uses the method described here and only gives the fill height (8mm +-0.5mm).
Great videos on the vstar, I've been using them alot lately, I was wondering if the tps reads no resistance when on the carb but has around 6 ohms off the carb does that mean it's completely shot, also It does get resistance on the carb but only when I turn the tps really far to the point where It it can't be fastened. The bike doesn't idle down when stoped in gear but drops down in rpms immediately when I put it in neutral. Sorry for the long winded comment, I was just looking for some insight
Hi, I have an unusual situation. I bought a V-Star 650' 2005, Classic few day ago.. Hadn't run in two years. Removed the carbs, they were full of green residue from the old fuel. I remove main jets, floats, etc., used gumout carb cleaner, them compressed air. Put everything back together turns over but won't start. I have spark on both cylinders ; the bowls are full with gas from the pump. I can hear the fuel pump come on then stop. But I can pour a little gas in each carb throat , hit the starter button, and it will start and run that gas out. Then no start. It's as if it's being shut off somehow. It doesn't have the stop solenoids on the fuel bowls. This has me baffled. Any ideas? Thanks, Art Rigsby

I watched several of your videos on this carburetor rebuild process. I followed them explicitly, but I’m still having an issue setting float height. No matter which way I bend the tang on the float, the height of the fuel is still 1mm above the factory line on the float bowl. What could be causing this issue?
I am wondering why the jet is removed in connection with the TPS sensor - like you take it out, remove TMS, install TMS and reinstall the jet. Can we skip the jet when calibrating the sensor?
I drilled out the plugs and found that both of the plugs are fully closed. I mean they are seated all the way in, zero turns. Could this be why my bike doesn’t run well? It is a 2007 Custom 650 with 5200 miles that I got used. It wasn’t running when purchased I had it towed, did a carb kit and got it running - just never running healthful as one would expect. It bogs especially past half throttle and the solenoids kick in and the bike won’t go when that happens - I added an LED indicator to the solenoids so I would know if that was the cause - but it rides poorly before the solenoids actuate. It is a California bike - 2nd owner and I live in California. Should I clean it and then go2-1/2 turns in and try it out ? It just seems odd that it would come fro. The factory that way but I drilled out the plugs tonight so it wasn’t tampered with.
@@Lgn26point2 I cant fathom that they would be fully seated. Then, nothing from California surprises me anymore. I would in-fact bring them 2 turns out just to see how it idles and comes off idle, adjust from there.
Retro Tech & Electronics I did that and started her up and it doesn’t sound promising. I will warm her up tomorrow and go out for a couple of miles to see how things are. I wish I could adjust them with the air box installed - at least I can leave them installed. Thanks for your advice. I detect a Boston accent.
I touched my flats xvs650 and nowww atttt WOT I lose 8.5mph per gear and I get not a rev limiter sound but a fuel cut off sound so .... did I make my floats to rich to much fuel ?
I have been doing carbs for many years ,so i do recognize a man that knows the proper procedure,👍
Very well made vid, just bought a 04 ,650 v Star nice to see a carb man,do the job in detail and explain it so well ,thanks

Very helpful video ... after watching this i made a shoppinglist for screws .....well done sir... thanks for sharing

I would get the complete assortment at OBI

you could manually turn the tps off the carb and watch the resistance curve to see if the device is broken.
Thanks ,,,better than most , .......AATW.......
Thanks!
What would be the symptoms of your throttle position sensor going bad??
just check the sensor itself, its resistance.....

Sounds like it needs a more comprehensive cleaning and rebuild
What is the stock main jet size?
Nice work. Do i need a fancy volt meter or will a walmart one work? My 06 vstar 650 is giving me the tps code. Not a very cheap part.
A walmart one will work. The TPS is a straight-forward test.
What do you mean by giving you TPS code?

!What are the solenoids used for?
I believe it shuts off fuel flow to the main jets for emissions purposes when powered off.

Sorry no. I’d encourage you to get the maintenance manual for the bike and learn it.
