The Villisca axe murders occurred between the evening of June 9, 1912, and the early morning of June 10, 1912, in the town of Villisca, Iowa, United States. The six members of the Moore family and two guests were found bludgeoned in the Moore residence. All eight victims, including six children, had severe head wounds from an axe. A lengthy investigation yielded several suspects, one of whom was tried twice. The first trial ended in a hung jury and the second ended in an acquittal. The crime remains unsolved.
The Moore family consisted of parents Josiah B. (aged 43) Sarah (née Montgomery) (39), and their four children: Herman Montgomery (11), Mary Katherine (10), Arthur Boyd (7), and Paul Vernon (5). An affluent family, the Moores were well known and well liked in their community. On June 9, 1912, Mary Katherine Moore invited Ina Mae and Lena Gertrude Stillinger to spend the night at the Moore residence. That evening, the visiting girls and the Moore family attended the Presbyterian church where they participated in the Children's Day Program, which Sarah had coordinated. After the program ended at 9:30 p.m., the Moores and the Stillinger sisters walked to the Moores' house, arriving between 9:45 and 10 p.m.
At 7 a.m. the next day, June 10, Mary Peckham, the Moores' neighbor, became concerned after she noticed that the family had not come out to do their morning chores. Peckham knocked on the Moores' door. When nobody answered, she tried to open the door and discovered that it was locked. Peckham let the Moores' chickens out and called Ross Moore, Josiah's brother. Like Peckham, Moore received no response when he knocked on the door and shouted. Ross unlocked the front door with his copy of the house key. While Peckham stood on the porch, Ross went into the parlor and opened the guest bedroom door, where he found Ina and Lena Stillinger's bodies on the bed. Moore immediately told Peckham to call Henry "Hank" Horton, Villisca's primary peace officer, who arrived shortly thereafter. Horton's search of the house revealed that the entire Moore family and the two Stillinger girls had been bludgeoned to death. The murder weapon, an axe belonging to Josiah, was found in the guest room where the Stillinger sisters were found.
Doctors concluded that the murders had taken place between midnight and 5 a.m. Two spent cigarettes in the attic suggested that the killer or killers patiently waited (according to the official tour, there were no cigarettes found) in the attic until the Moore family and the Stillinger guests were asleep. The killer(s) began in the master bedroom, where Josiah and Sarah Moore were sleeping. Josiah received more blows from the axe than any other victim; his face had been cut to such an extent that his eyes were missing. The ceiling in his room also had a gouge mark from when the murderer lifted the axe to murder him.
The killer or killers used the blade of the axe on Josiah while using the blunt end on the rest of the victims. Herman, Mary Katherine, Arthur, and Paul were next bludgeoned in the head in the same manner as their parents. Afterwards, the murderer returned to the master bedroom to inflict more blows on the elder Moores, knocking over a shoe that had filled with blood, before moving downstairs to the guest bedroom and killing Ina and Lena. Seemingly afterwards, a 4lb slab of bacon was taken out of the icebox and laid next to the axe. Investigators also found untouched food and bloody water during the search.
Investigators believed that all of the victims except for Lena Stillinger had been asleep when murdered. They thought that she was awake and tried to fight back, as she was found lying crosswise on the bed, and with a defensive wound on her arm. Lena's nightgown was pushed up to her waist and she was wearing no undergarments, leading to law enforcement speculation that the killer(s) sexually molested her or attempted to do so.

Hi Scott, at the beginning of October, I asked you to cover the Villisca Axe Murder House. I grew up in Davenport, IA. My grandparents, Mom, aunt are all buried at the Geneseo Methodist Church. Cemetery. Near Buckingham IA. Where my grandparents farmed they retired in Waterloo. My remaining living uncle and aunt live near Ames, IA. I don't know why I told you all that, lol! Nerves I guess! I spent all my childhood in Iowa. I love it there so much! However, I married a southern man so, I'm stuck in Tennessee, lol! It looks like the weather was gorgeous the day you filmed.
Anyone living and growing up in Iowa knows the story behind this house! Just walking through it with you filming gives me the Willie's and freaks me out! It's like you can feel a presence as your filming. Could just be me! Although I'm sensitive to paranormal situations.
Thank you so much for covering this unsolved, tragic murders. I know it effected the community for years. Of coarse it did.....a lunatic killed 2 adults and 6 children! Tragic! Especially that it's gone unsolved.

I was told by my mom born in 1924 that in the 1800's to early 1900's after a death in the house they would cover all the mirrors so the deceased person's soul wouldn't be trapped in the mirror.

First of all, nice headstone! Such a horrific story. The period pieces in the house certainly looked like the authentic pieces that would be used in that time frame. I enjoyed Johnny's explanation of how the history went. The police corruption that still goes on 100 years later. Smh. There was a superstition that mirrors were covered in the presence of a dead person so their souls would not be captured inside the mirror. I felt terrible sadness and fear inside this house. Amazing Scott.

I feel the same everytime I see a program on this house. The people who were killed here, if their energy remains, the energy is feelings of fear and horrify and pain. If the evil murderer's energy is here, that would be the only dark, demonic energy.

I believe there was a one guest, or two, In the house that night, I believe the family were very possibly drugged with a sedative somehow, there is no way, anyone could murder eight, in different rooms, and no one would get up, or no screaming being heard.

I've been watching him for over a decade now, off and on, giving tours, and the way he tells the story, just like Scott, makes you feel like you're right there and you can actually visualize it. It transports one back in time. That is a talent that not very many possess. I always thought it was the reverend. Then I thought it was Jake byrd but that would of been impossible. I think there was a possible love triangle... And one of the spouses weren't a willing or knowing participant.

Excellent presentation and visualization even with a lack of eyewitness testimony! I'd never heard of this tragedy - thanks to your viewer for planting this seed in your noggin, and for bringing us along on the trek. The poor Stillinger mother, miscarrying after the deaths of their daughters. Looking at their birth/death dates, the Stillingers passed on relatively soon after each other. With some, tragedy and loss of a child drives the parents apart in divorce. Looks like these two stuck together and stuck it out. I don't know if I could remain in the same town with so much pain and the murders unsolved.

Wow, super stoked you did this one! I've wanted to visit this place now that I live closer to Iowa. The story of this murder is one that has fascinated me, nobody ever figured out the identity of the killer. However, I would suggest to anyone interested to read "The Man From The Train". The authors discovered other similar murders throughout the US probably committed by the same guy. Always a town or area closest to the train tracks.

Great video Scott. Beautiful home. Can't say i experienced anything abnormal about the place and I was walking around by myself at night throughout the house. People do bad things. Homes are just inanimate structures. I think the fact that it happened so long ago, as opposed to inhabiting a house where someone like a suicide melted into the floor, do to not being found for some time, for lack of more appropriate words, is what made it not creepy or as some people say, bad juju. Awesome interview and video! For anyone wondering what crime scene cleanups are like post suicide and the person not being found for weeks... Don't look it up. You WILL regret it. Sad stuff. Great upload and interview Scott! Rip to the family.

Well I can tell you that unless "parts" are left, you have to pay for cleanup. My mother had to clean almost everything after the suicide of my step dad because we were poor.... and I can tell you that the blood is probably still staining the concrete of that houses laundry room over 20 years later.

Ooh, Ive spent the night there! during the introduction with someone that works there i was sitting on the piano bench and i felt like someone blew directly onto my face....it was creepy. We went to town to eat and we came back and I was wiped out me and another lady laid on the floor downstairs drained of all our energy for about 2 hours. while the others were doing EVP sessions upstairs. It was strange there...
