This game by the acclaimed creator of the Metal Gear Solid franchise never released in America, though the game was originally planned to release in the US. I helped partially playtest the Saturn translation of Policenauts and my name is in the credits. Just so everyone's clear, Marc is the one who did the bulk of the translation (with Artemio), while Slowbeef was responsible mostly for the technical side of the patch. The Saturn version is particularly impressive because it contains a full glossary of all the game's terms and references, all of which Marc impeccably translated without fail. If you do decide to play Policenauts, make it this version. You should have no problems emulating it.
thanks for your service in getting this out there! i played the PSX translation when it released, and will have to play it on the Saturn next time. here's hoping the script also gets back-ported to the PC-98 version at some point. i feel its visuals are the strongest, but understand entirely why it's lower priority.
Sleeping Cocoon Hah Marc and his team should be thanked, I really didn’t do much. As for the PC-98 version, while it definitely had amazing graphics, it would have to be a complete retranslation because the script and even order of events differ from the other versions. The first time around there are also no Japanese subtitles for the spoken dialogue, so those would have to be programmed in if it’s even possible. So I’m personally doubtful.
oh, wow! i had no clue the versions that came afterwards diverged so much from the first release. that's super cool. i'm sure at some point there'll at least be a captioned play through or something :)

Not all Kojima games were localized and translated for international markets for instance there’s boktai 3 for gba , the only one the series to not have had this treatment.
I would love if Kojima would make another point/click anime game in the style of policenauts and snatcher for the ps4
ImmaLittlePip No one would buy it. At least, not enough to justify its creation. Let's hope Death Stranding does well so that he will be making any future games at all.

ImmaLittlePip I don't know if the words "anime" and "small budget" can exist in the same sentence. Not unless the animation is done as cheaply as possible with shoddy 3D. And still, Kojima is expected to have massive earning potential. If you've heard how things work in the entertainment industry it's not that his games have to make a profit, it's that they have to make enough of a profit to interest people in giving him the budget he desires. Then, now that I think about it, we can go into what Kojima thinks his budget should be for a new game under his direction. After all these years while we enjoyed his work we can't pretend that it's impossible for the man to have gotten a massive ego, had he not had one already.
Point & Click is gonna be a hard sell nowadays (and I'm a massive fan of adventure games, growing up with traditional text-based and point & click adventure games back in the day) but I can see Kojima being able to pull off a cinematic/narrative based game like Policenauts more in the style of Quantic Dream/Telltale gameplay, with a bit more depth with whatever Kojima would have as an idea.
Give "Read Only Memories" a spin.
Kojima´s Tokimeki Memorial games still aren´t translated but few are complaining. The video even mentions one of them. So not all his directed and produced works have left Japan.
I only watched a playthrough of this game translated by the super best friends crew, but I can definitely tell you that it's worth it. As always, Kojima succeeds with creating a fantastic and memorable game with surprises you don't see coming and the english translation by slowbeef made it so much better.
I really want this and Snatcher to be re-released today
Dan Johnson honestly, Snatcher is one of those games where emulation is your only choice due to how stupidly expensive it is and then having to buy a sega genesis and a sega cd for it
The upside: Konami makes a HD remake
The downside: it's a pachinko machine
Konami wants to do movie adaptations, but they will be live action remakes co-produced with Netflix.
Played this thing all the way through without knowing a lick of Japanese before the translation was released, and it was still awesome.

In your sidenote on Meryl Silverburgh, you forgot to mention that she was also a carry-over voice actress to Metal Gear Solid. Kyoko Terase voiced both the Metal Gear Solid Meryl and the Policenauts Meryl (under the pseudonym Megumi Terase).

I believe the SEGA Saturn is the best version and the fan translation has been available for awhile, now; it's freakin' fantastic!

Great video. I do remember seeing and playing briefly a build of Policenaut in english at E3. I was very dispointed that it was never released, since I was at the time (and still is) a huge fan of Snatcher.

Actually you are quite right about his storytelling style back then. It was references, but also that it contained depth, layers, and connected to the narrative. Sometimes it would unveil more to the characters, or the story itself unfolding at every scene. Young Kojima = and present day are still very much the same man. Then and now, his style of unraveling where a story can lead, makes us question everything we do. I am curious how Death Stranding will also connect on that same level. @PredatoryQQmber thought provoking, but well said
The real issue there is that Konami are not interested in doing anything beyond doing what they do right now, regardless of what anyone else wants.
I find it fitting that Kojima's one line in the game is "Surprise asshole!" since that phrase basically describes his entire career in a nutshell.

I love the fact that Meryl in metal gear solid on ps1 and gamecube was from this game but a different person and of course the policenauts reference in ending where you save Meryl

For those out there who feel more inclined to watch an LP of this instead of checking it out yourself first, I personally recommend the Two Best Friends Play playthrough.
Be prepared for dealing with frozen dinners, SPACE NARC, & "Ore no WAIF".

i would not recommend this - they talk over much of the dialogue and play through it blind. it's hard to stumble through an adventure game, but still, they miss out on some very great moments and easter eggs. it's the kind of playthrough you don't watch for the game itself, like most best friends playthroughs - i'd go as far as to say that being the way you go first with policenauts would kind of ruin it for you.
The music in the background of 9:45 reminds me of The Charlie Brown song

Everybody remembers Slowbeef for Retsupurae, but barely anyone remembers him for his work on the Policenauts translation. That needs to be rectified!
I actually have played and completed the translated ps1 version on an emulator... Decades old game and it is one of the best games i have ever played. So much ahead of it's time... Especially that bomb defusing part in the end, genius.
Snatcher is also pretty good but Policenauts is on par with the Metal Gear series itself.
Kojima is a god.

I love this game. As much as MGS changed the way that I looked at games as an art and equal to movies, if I ever got to meet Kojima again, Policenauts is all I’d want to talk about.
Played the fan translated Sega version and Snatcher as well a couple years ago and it was a damn good experience. Emulate these classics now

Policenauts is a massive improvement over Snatcher in terms of presentation.
Snatcher was an interactive manga while Policenauts is an interactive anime film.

Boktai 3 wasn't translated into any other language as well. The Boktai series is highly underrated and it has some great installments. Specially the first two.

there's really no reason to. Darkstalkers 3 on the PlayStation is the US release of "Vampire Savior: EX Edition" which contains the content from both the base game and its Hunter / Saviort 2 updates.

Snatcher and it's spinoffs, the entire Metal Gear series as either producer or director with the exception of Snake's Revenge and Survive, PT, Zone of the Enders, and Boktai.
He's currently working on Death Stranding after separating from Konami.
as someone who hates hideo kojima but used to be a big fan of his, i want to say his best games are, in no particular order:
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Snatcher, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, PT (Playable Teaser).
zone of the enders and lords of shadow are awful-mediocre unless you're REALLY into mechs for ZoE. mgs4, portable ops and peace walker have major problems that make them just okay at best. mgsvtpp is godawful, by a thousand cuts more than anything else, too, since if either the story or gameplay were overall good it'd save it - both these things have a million terrible decisions and are unfinished. the only games i haven't played that he's worked on are boktai and the visual novels he's worked on besides policenauts and snatcher.
also, to brochebug, saying he did the entirety of metal gear even besides sr and survive is very incorrect. even out of the well known games you forgot he didn't do revengeance. besides that there's NES metal gear 1, both metal gear ac!d games, ghost babel... i'm not sure on his involvement with the nokia phone game but i doubt he had a direct hand in it. on that note, i love the ac!d games and ghost babel is objectively great, one of the best game boy color titles period. actually now that i think of it i don't think kojima had a direct hand in portable ops either...
