    Hello Ma Damsel in Data!
    I'm in my 40's and I've decided to work in ML and AI. I've been learning that for a couple of years and I'm now applying for a job as Data Scientist! I'm basically an engineer with an MA degree in telecommunication. I came up with your channel while I was exploring how the job interview would look like, and your guidelines were accurate and the selection process is still going on and they haven't kicked me off yet :) Then, TH-cam suggested this video to me. You help make DS cool (beside the very useful content, of course). Subscribed!

    Hi Damsel, I've been watching your content nonstop since I discovered your channel 45 mins ago. With your college credentials and job experience, you are certainly qualified to comment on a lot of things related to data science. Plus your sweet personality and helpful attitude, i cannot help but want to pick your brain for something important to me. Becoming a data scientist is good career choice especially with the kinda prestige that it brings in our society. But I am actually drawn to the nature of the skill, more specifically its interdisciplinary requirements for a good data scientist's capacity of problem-solving. Similar to your experience, my academic passions coincide with those requirements and it feels right to set my sights on this filed. Also, I intend to go to grad school for further mathematical training. It is necessary for me to start considering what I would like to become because that will influence my decision to pick a specialty to get into. So I want to ask a few questions. 1. If I want to be a really really good and respected data scientist out there, which graduate program should I get into? Applied Statistic or Computer Science? 2. Does research experience help with jobs? 3. On the off chance, if I pursued a PHD in Pure Statistics but end up in industries (i actually prefer this scenario), would I be a overkill for the job? I know this is a lot. Any answers are appreciated.

      Hi and thank you so much for the super kind words!!
      You may have already caught some of my thoughts on graduate schooling for data science in my "how to learn data science" video (th-cam.com/video/dJfh-hCJ5F8/w-d-xo.html) but to summarize, I think grad school gives you more job opportunities but it is not a must-have, and you should only pursue it if you're genuinely interested in learning more about your area of choice in an academic setting. To specifically answer your questions:
      1) Data science is about solving problems using data. The hard skills required are knowledge of modelling and statistical testing techniques to do this, and the knowledge of computer science to be able to implement them efficiently. This being said, I really don't think it matters too much what kind of graduate program you choose, as long as it helps you apply these skills and practice problem solving. I think most STEM fields will accomplish this, so choose what you're interested in. If I had to choose, I would choose a math program with a focus on statistics.
      2) Yes research experience certainly helps. There are many research-based data science jobs out there that will not consider candidates without it.
      3) I don't think a PhD is overkill because many data science positions require / strongly prefer experts of this caliber. Of course, there is a chance that there is a minority that may find it to be overkill but if you're interested in research these roles wouldn't be the ones for you anyway.
      Hope this helps. Good luck!

      also, damsel - what are your viewpoints on post graduate programs and data science bootcamps and things of that sort... i know you've talk about them in your vids, but since you're being so kind and answering to your audience- have you worked or collaborated with anyone that came from one of those those programs/certifications ? (not including a master's program though, just the other programs) (kinda feel like im interrogating you, sorry if i am...)

    • @damselindata
      @damselindata  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brianxayasone As far as data scientists / data analysts go, I don't think I've personally worked with someone who came out of a bootcamp or non-masters online program, although I have worked with many people who have come out of degree programs outside of math / computer science or anything directly related to data science, and also people who have come out of completely different careers. I've also worked with and met many software developers at great tech companies who have come out of bootcamps / online non-masters programs.
      I think online courses and programs are a great way to learn data science. Then, it's up to the individual to complete projects and use networking skills to work their way into a data science role from a non-traditional background. The individuals I've worked with got themselves into non-data science and usually non-technical roles at companies that have established data science teams. Then they transition into data science roles within the company. The number of people I've seen get started this way (works well at tech companies) is pretty remarkable!
