UPDATE: Okay, everyone who is currently struggling or has struggled to land a data role is absolutely going to hate my guts for telling this story, but I do have one piece of advice that might just prove crucial in your job hunt at the end. I stated in my original comment above that I was looking to transition to a data science position at my current company and was going to e-mail the hiring manager the same day. That day was a Monday, and by Thursday, the job was practically mine. It took HR several weeks to handle the transfer request, but I write this today with my new official job title as Data Scientist. Note I have no formal training in AI/ML/DS. I have a Bachelors and Masters in Computer Science, but neither degree focused on these areas. My entire educational background in this field was on Udemy (and a few courses on 365 Data Science). I had four rounds of interviews that spanned four hours over two days. Not a single technical question was asked. These "interviews" were more like casual chats. And that's how easy everything went! Here's that crucial piece of advice I promised: If you're having trouble landing the job you want directly, find a company that hires for that role and apply for any other (preferably technical) role you can get. Stay in that role for 1 - 3 years and do well. Then, when the opportunity arises, apply for your desired role. Jobs are 1000x easier to get via lateral transition than by cold calling or shotgunning your resume. With my lack of formal education, professional experience and portfolio, there was no chance for me to find a data science job out on the open market. Now that my foot's in the door, my career is set in not one but two fields! Happy hunting, everyone!
@@bin4ry_d3struct0r wow that’s amazing. And I completely agree that this is the most reliable way to score a data science job. I personally know multiple data scientists at my current company who started out in completely different roles at the company. Very happy for you and thanks for sharing your story!
hi! I really haven't experienced too much emphasis on school / program in the industry as long as you have a good application package and the skills to back it up (keep in mind I am in Canada so maybe not the best perspective to gather). The biggest value of the school is the alumni network I would say. I would go to Linkedin and find some graduates of the program and see how many of them are in the type of role you would like to be in. You can even reach out to them for advice and to make connections in the industry. I did this a bunch. Good luck!
It was a huge learning curve for sure! But it also was the first time I truly understood what big data really means, and appreciated tools (ie spark and big data stores) that can actually work with it efficiently

Great video.... I had 5 yrs experience in BPO and now I m looking career transition In data science.. so what is the right path to learn things fast and do I need to again start from bottom?
Thank you! Because you have domain expertise, if I were you, I would transition through the data analyst path. As a data analyst at a tech company solving problems in your own domain, you will start off with great compensation and will get exposure to the different data science jobs available to you so you can properly choose. Domain expertise is a huge requirement for data / business analytics.
you are anyways at the bottom working in a call center in India. How much more can you fall down. do n try out some courses .. u have nothing to loose. no one falls below what u doing now worst case u will few bucks paying for courses.
Hello, I have a question if you don't mind, so I'm currently doing a bachelors of science in statistics and thinking about pursuing a career in data science in the future, unfortunately I couldn't get into the computer science program in my university and minors/double majors aren't allowed. Do you think that statistics is a good major for data science? If not would it be possible for me to get into data science after a few years of experience in data analytics, if I'm not mistaken I believe that my degree would give me a good opportunity at working in data analytics
Hi! Statistics is an AMAZING major for data science, one of the best! Either option works: you can start in data analytics and transition to a data science role (important to keep in mind here that the differences between the two are not standard, and there is a lot of overlap, so don't worry so much about the title, more about the type of projects you want to work on), or you can self-study computer science, complete some ML projects and potentially get straight into a traditional DS role.
Mainly because the specific opportunity was at a company and domain I was extremely excited about! And also I enjoy changing things up to expand my skillset and solidify the kind of work I enjoy doing most
Hello, I’m looking to transition to Data science through a conversion MSc however, the program I got accepted on to doesn’t have BCS accreditation. I would like some advice on whether this is a deal breaker that would potentially affect my employability. Thank you 🙏🏾
Hi there, I personally don't think it will. Doesn't seem like a big deal to me at all but all employers have their own biases about education. If you have any other questions after watching please feel free to leave more comments and I'll get back to you!
Pick whichever major you’re most interested in, prioritizing one with a co-op program / internship opportunity support if possible! Both CS and Math are a great pick for data science. You can always do a double major or major in one, minor in the other if you can’t decide.
The tech industry has slowed down a bit with hiring right now but there are many data scientist roles open right now so it’s definitely not a bad time! As long as you pick up the skills and can demonstrate them, shifting into a data science role within banking would be a great option to consider!
If you help me write my first project, I will help you learn to take out that popping sound you got in your video. It can go a long way removing that pop so your engagement is consistent.

Hello! It really depends, but it may take more than 5 months if you haven’t taken any high school level calculus. However 5 dedicated months is an amazing start to take some online courses. I recommend entering the industry through the data analyst job title as requirements tend to be less focused on formal education
Coding cutie! 😍 Blockchain Devs seem to be in the same sort of space as data science was back then - buzz words emerging, applicant pool still smaller. Would you compare the current state of evolution of that industry and level of opportunity to what you experienced starting out in data science? Specifically, in 2022, what would bias you towards one field or another if you were to start over?
This is a great comparison, I agree that it seems blockchain development is now what data science was 5 years ago (although I’m certainly not an expert on what’s happening in the blockchain space). When I started out in data science, I was not aware of the supply/demand advantage or the “trendiness” of the profession. I picked it because it matched my skill set and interests. If I were to start over, I would do the same thing - choose the field that I’m excited about and have some specialized knowledge in, as long as it has reasonably accessible career opportunities that align with my goals. Hope that helps!
Just started my degree plan for data science. How much math were you required to take? They’ve got me going all the way through calc 3, linear algebra and matrices 😞

I’m looking to transition from being a marketing manager to a data scientist. Is that at all appealing to hiring teams, or would I need to start from the absolute bottom again?
Hi Emily - I think marketing is an extremely relevant background to have for many data science roles to do with customer behaviour, ads, marketing decision making and business analytics. Depending on your technical skills and interests, as a start I would recommend looking at Data Analyst roles at tech companies in the domain you previously worked in. Your story + cute smile = perfect video!!
Thanks so much!
Thanks for awaking from your TH-cam slumber!
I am studying Master degree of Data Science, living and working in Toronto. I am glad I have a chance to watch your videos.
That’s awesome!!! So happy to hear that, thank you for the kind words 🥰
Hi Sophia ! i would like to do the same ! why Canada instead of studing a master in Ireland (Dublin for ex im here right know) or EEUU ??
One day I'll save you damsel
Love this
Thanks for watching ♥️
I’m looking to transition from being a marketing manager to a data scientist. Is that at all appealing to hiring teams, or would I need to start from the absolute bottom again?
Hi Emily - I think marketing is an extremely relevant background to have for many data science roles to do with customer behaviour, ads, marketing decision making and business analytics. Depending on your technical skills and interests, as a start I would recommend looking at Data Analyst roles at tech companies in the domain you previously worked in. You’ll start off with a great salary and your marketing domain expertise will be extremely appreciated
When in doubt, add *cat memes* :-)
Nice
Who is willing to share their salary to the public? Only Damsel in Data. Are you going to talk about your job no 5? Hahaha. Just kidding, when will be your next video? Looking forward to more contents. Maybe try to make a video of expectation vs reality of data science career?
That’s a great video suggestion! I’ve been very preoccupied the past 6 months or so but I’m hoping to get back into TH-cam within weeks!
Damsel in data posts, I tune in.
Wow thank u for the loyalty 😭🙏
Whats your MBTI? ENTX?
ENFP! But definitely on the border of F and T
@@damselindata You know what, I am actually an INFJ! on the border of F(51%) and T too.
Maybe thats why you are so attractive to me haha.
You videos are good and does help me in preparing to be a data scientist!
Hlo mam can I become data scientist without any degree 😌😌😌
I discuss this in another video: th-cam.com/video/dJfh-hCJ5F8/w-d-xo.html there are time stamps in the description so you can skip to the part about whether or not you need a degree
@@damselindata thanks
Property price prediction model => as in the Boston Housing Market Dataset🤣🤣.... every stats/ds course flashes back
Haha I was actually using a paid stream of MLS data and didn’t know at the time that I was working on one of the most popular data science teaching problems 😆
@@damselindata yeah that problem is iconic LOL for standard classical statistics multiple regression , regularized regression etc ... and housing datasets tend to be relatively cleaner ... anyhow I'm trying to get a job in field (my undergrad degree was in Stats/Econ) and this video got me started on a portfolio... also signed for Georgia Tech Data Structures and Algos online via EDX (verified version( as I've seen suggested for nonCS people trying to enter field
@@landonlowe4029 that’s awesome - I’ve also seen this program recommended so I’m sure it will be great! Good luck :)
@@damselindata yea I figure the graded version is worth it for proof of concept..I would take the course in your youtubee summaries but the GAtech edx one is legitimately the same course and title as their undergrad course just split into 4 parts .. your youtube summaries pushed me over the line so thank you lol
@@landonlowe4029 that is so amazing to hear!!! Thank you for letting me know and I hope the course goes well!!
You are so pretty and also love your content 😅
thank you!
Lol Graduated from Waterloo (Comparable to Harvard), with Honors and Looks like a Super Model, you Maam are an outlier to the max. (Your experience is hardly relevant to the average person lol).
Regardless good on you on your progress.
I just love you
Your videos are dreams lol
Thank you!
Beauty with brain 😉
Can a data engineer work as a programmer??????
Yes data engineers are programmers!
@@damselindata what the difference between data engineer and soft ware engineer?
@@damselindata Approximately how much is the salary of a beginner data engineer?
A data engineer is a type of software engineer who works on building data systems. I go over it more in this video: th-cam.com/video/rKpdsnjJjOM/w-d-xo.html salary will depend on location and many other things, you can check out levels.fyi for an estimate :)
I just like her. Great video though
Thank you!!
hey cutie. Did someone tell u resemble like Amber Heard especially when you smile. we can date one-day n we can talk about regression, neural networks.we can learn about support vector machines during I can show my own vector which will support u later at night.
Mam, are you married
Why even embarrass yourself by saying you had no xp no skills and no projects but you got the job by stalking them and flirting?
